Thinking of adding another hobby / collection

My BIL was commenting (whinning) about the high prices of bourbon in comparison to when he lived in Philly. He now lives in Lexington, Kentucky and evidently it was cheaper in Philly. He said people were buying bottles out of state and bringing it back to Kentucky to flip. Course even with his anesthesiologist salary is the biggest tight wad I've ever met, so 5 or 10 bucks a bottle is a big deal to him.

BTW, I half expected @thrillhill to show up at my house last night to rearrange my bourbon, scotch, and Irish whiskeys to their own shelves LMAO.....

That you would say that this morning is funnier than you know.

Becky came out to the shop around 9:30pm and I showed her your shelf pictures. Then I showed her several on FB. Then she came back out around 11:30pm to see why I hadn't came to bed yet.

I was standing on my stool turned up sideways sliding bottles around on the big top shelf, had my desk covered with bottles, and a few dozen on the floor.

She ended up helping me so that way I got done around 1:15am.

I'm not saying that rearranging my shelves made me feel better since a sane person could not come rearrange yours, I'm just saying I feel better for it this morning.

You got to have a method or it's just plain madness.

so how did I do?

but it's not really the category you were after.

Elaborate please.

Are you two communicating something outside this thread that would make you think he was more "chasing unicorns"? Cause I didn't get that from his earlier posts.

To be honest it's a good haul, but it's not really the category you were after. Good stuff for drinking though!
I let Ms Shirley talk me into them. I told her what I was looking for. I want to stock a few nice ones for when I have company & one to sip & I would like to start collecting

We were via text. I told him I wanted to buy cheaper ones that people really loved and enjoyed and are limited batches to hold onto.

The Elijah Craig is a good drinker. Especially at the price point. Haven’t had the others. Have had the Larceny Wheated Bourbon and it was so-so to me so I haven’t delved deeper into the Wheated bottles. Then again I am a novice at this.

Bernheim is a damned fine drinker. It's a wheated whiskey that is very similar to Maker's Mark (but general consensus is that it is better plus it has an age statement) and some of the Weller offerings without being hard to find or expensive. If it was a $50 bottle I would still stock it. Very underrated. It's almost as good as Weller Special Reserve. Almost.

The Angels Envy Rye is only a $100 bottle here only because we are a govt. control state. It can go for double that in states that are not gov controlled. It's not good enough to be a $200 bottle. But, supply and demand such as it is right now, it's an ok bottle to speculate with. Could be worth a lot more a few years from now especially when they stop making the rye version as this thing winds down. It would be worthwhile to have one of the "regular original" Angels Envy as well. Everyone should have it in their collection.

Elijah Craig is a good place to stop and talk. That is a good investment bottle you have there. Elijah Craig Barrel Proof won Whiskey of the Year in 2017 (Whiskey Advocate Magazine). I don't like it. I am in the minority. Folks already collect and lust after the different lot #s. See pics below. And those are my pics. Even though I don't like drinking it (only in comparison to other things I do like, I would be just fine drinking it if it was the only bourbon I had) I still know they make pretty good investment bottles. Elijah Craig is only gaining steam at this point.

The third bottle in the pics below is a "barrel pick". The Raleigh Bourbon and Banter Club (Facebook) was able to meet with a brand ambassador from the distillery and sample several different barrels. That is the one they picked by vote. So they buy it (the whole barrel), then it get's bottled up and in NC case, sent to the specified ABC store which most often in this club's case is Angier since Shirley is so wonderful to work with. And that is not the only "club" that does that, heck, it's not even the only club in Wake County to do that.

Often these "one-off" bottles can be highly prized by the "fan boys" of a certain distillery or whiskey. If that barrel only made 200 bottles, those are the only 200 bottles in the entire world that will taste EXACTLY like that. In free states, these "one-off" offerings are called store picks. You can hardly ever go wrong buying these. They often (usually at least a couple of years after the fact) can be traded for much more expensive but more commonly attainable bottles.

The ABC boards here in NC also sometimes do this. Most don't. The Chatham County ABC on 15-501 just got in a Wild Turkey Kentucky Spirit "store pick" a few weeks ago. They have a Russel's Reserve Single Barrel on the way (also from Wild Turkey).

I think you are off to a good start. It's not like you can realistically jump in as a newbie and immediately find the ones that folks take a year or two of searching to find. Sometimes you CAN throw money at the problem. But that takes a lot of fun out of it, especially if you end up buying at the top of what the market would bear out. I don't think that is anything to brag about. Simple possession is hardly ever the point. Sometimes, but not often.

Some folks like wheated and not rye and vice versa . Some like high proof, some like low. And every now and then you get something out of left field hits dead on.

If you got friends that are just starting out, try each getting a different type and have your own tasting.

If not enough friends want to try, get some one to drive and go to a bourbon bar one afternoon and see if they will do 1/2 pours for yo to try.

Knowledge bomb. Thanks for that.

I am OK with Rye since that is where I really started, but probably need to sample more wheated.

Thanks everyone for your replies and knowledge. I have a lot to learn. It's amazing to see how many bottles are in the back with names on them. Ms. Shirley is everything y'all said. She gave me websites, cards, Facebook groups etc.

I think I'll keep stopping by for sure.

The Angel's envy rye here is about $90 and always on the shelf.

The bernheim is nummy nummy.

Have not paid much attention to the EC, I'm with @thrillhill and not a huge fan, but see its merits.
