A little long. I'll preface this by saying YMMV. Anyone with experience feel free to chip in. Mods if not appropriate please remove. Figured this may be an alternative for those of you who can't get internet or the speed sucks. In one of the Facebook groups someone mentioned using a hot spot with AT&T's unlimited data plan as their home internet source. Through PMs I asked more questions and decided to check it out. I currently get 20Mbps through CenturyStink. Once fiber is out here I'll drop CenturyStink. Currently averaging 20Mbps downloads with the hot spot. Sometimes faster. Sometimes slower. Have a couple of more antennas on the way to try out to see if they make a difference. I've seen people post speeds of 50's to the 100's. I'm pretty sure they were in a more populated area and closer to a tower. What I bought:

-Ordered a Netgear Nighthawk M1 AT&T hotspot online on sale at Best Buy- $213 with tax. Around $233 not on sale.

https://www.amazon.com/Netgear-Nigh...=nighthawk+m1&qid=1560290806&s=gateway&sr=8-2

-AT&T prepaid SIM card at Best Buy $9.99.

-Netgear MIMO antenna on Amazon $29.99
https://www.amazon.com/Netgear-6000...=netgear+mimo&qid=1560290913&s=gateway&sr=8-2
A little more about antennas later.

-$22 to an Ebayer for setting it up. You can do this yourself but I didn't have an IMEI (although apparently there are IMEI number generators). I figured by the time I buy a broken AT&T tablet off of Ebay with a valid IMEI number, it was easier for me to just pay the Ebayer. Have done this twice now with no problem what so ever.

- Anker Quick Charge 3.0 $12.99 on Amazon. From reading different forums, a lot of people of use this as their home internet source recommend upgrading to this as the original one may turn off and restart when it is used a lot.

Video on how to do it yourself. He is using an LB1120 hotspot, not a Nighthawk:

Under the video he states: Update-- It is recommended to use IMEI's of LTE Devices, since some users report using non LTE imei's causes them to get only 3G or 4G connections instead of 4G LTE.

Cost= $34.99/month if you let them automatically draft it each month (I use a prepaid card). $40 if you don't let them draft it. Before I purchased anything I borrowed a friends AT&T phone to see what type of reception I would get. I got 2-3 bars so I knew I could get a signal.

Antennas- I will not use this as my permanent internet. Will use it on vacations, when the kids are hogging the interent, etc. so indoor antennas are fine for me. From my reading, people who do use this as their only source on internet tend to buy a pair of the outdoor yagi type antennas for better reception. You'll want one that starts out at the 700mhz range, not 800mhz. Ones like this:
https://ltefix.com/shop/antennas/4g...radome-9dbi-11dbi-4g-lte-directional-antenna/

I was getting upper 20's at my cousins and lower 30's at a friends house. My mother can only get 1.5Mbps from Centurylink (she doesn't have internet). I was getting 18-20Mbps at her house with 2 bars on the signal meter.

Caveats: You'll notice that under the Unlimited data plan it says you may be deprioritized at 22GB. It could happen. I have only read where one person said his speed was slowed down once he reached 22GB. You'll read on different forums/sites where a lot of people say they have went over that with no problem. They guy I spoke on the phone with from the Facebook forum helped me set my settings for better performance. At that time he had used 500GB and and his speed was not slowed down. I'm currently at 24GB and no decrease in speed. Is this for everyone? Absolutely not. But for those who don't have internet, have HughesNet, or can only get 1.5-10Mbps from CenturyStink or another provider it may be an alternative.

I’ve gone over 22GB a couple times on my phone and have never been slowed down.

I also have a hot spot with unlimited data, but not near as nice of a setup as you have. I’m guessing the prepaid is how you got unlimited with a hot spot? Or maybe they’ve changed their rules. When I set mine up you could do unlimited on a connected car but not a hot spot. So I bought a ZTE Mobley which uses the OBDII port, and found a USB adapter to power it.

I keep a Vudu stick in the bag with it that’s already set up for the ZTE. I also loan it out to friends when they’re traveling. For example, I have friends that are using it for a trip next week. Their current plan is 12GB for 6 devices...so they’ll use it unlimited hot spot for most of the time.

Glad it’s working out for you!!

(And thanks for being a customer) :D

Possibly but don't know for sure. On other forums people have mentioned it was grandfathered plans from when it was unlimited for tablets. Just did a speed check with Ookla 27.8 UP/19.1 down and another site 29.77 Up/21.11 down. I'm going to connect it to the Firestick to do some streaming to use up some data to see if it slows. If it doesn't great. If it does then my mom can use it until I need it for vacation, etc. You're welcome for me being a customer...lol. However my cell phone service is with US Cellular. This is the first time I've used AT&T.

Although...I will admit I’m a little spoiled with my fiber:

Even if it drops quite a bit using Wi-Fi:

(Newer devices will run twice that fast)

DSL from Charter running Google WiFi mesh.
I pay for 60/Mbps.

Yeah. This is not for y'all. Lol. This if for the people that are cruising the information super highway in a Pinto. Not Lamborghini's like you two are driving!. Someone in the Facebook group posted their current usage using the unlimited plan.

I have a feeling if they keep using that much someone up the chain at AT&T will take notice.

Does that nighthawk have the ability to bond your cell connection and your dsl connection together? Maybe a way to boost your speed?

I do not think so but can't say for sure. I have not read of anyone doing that.

Curious as to the choice of the hotspot you bought- any particular reason you chose the Nighthawk? I saw a couple others from Netgear not quite so pricey.

Looking around the Internet it was at the top of the list for a lot of people. My nephew does a lot of gaming and said the Nighthawk line was pretty good. Our lights are out right now and it sure is coming in handy right now!

I was doing some searching on Amazon, didn't see a lot of hotspots with an ethernet port. Looks like if I go this route, I'll be getting the one the dude used in the video. (LB1120?)
Walked the house, then the yard looking for the best cell signal, we're right on the edge so it doesn't look too good. Might have to stick with CenturyStink DSL :(

The way it was explained to me is that 1 signal bar on a good band can be better than 4 or 5 signal bars on a congested band. If you have one or two bars on your cell phone it should be doable. The Nighthawk is suppose to be better range wise than the LB1120 but I can't confirm that. If you go this route I recommend an antenna.

An antenna was exactly the route I was thinking. I work from home, so if I do this I have to go all in, make sure it's viable then drop the DSL in order to make certain I'm not down and can't work.
I still have 40 feet of tower I bought & haven't installed due to the health issues that popped up a couple years ago. A decent yagi, 30-35 ft up and pointed well should yield a good stable signal. I just have to save up for the expense.

From my reading on it a lot of people run two yagis at +45 and -45. LTE hacks has some good info on it.
