Last night the dogs found a copperhead in the driveway / wife was in a panic / took care of it with a bush axe. I have two large black snakes that live in by barn (which I like). Question is why after untold years does one show up. It would seem that the Black snakes would take care of any food source.

Thanks

If you have an abundance of cicadas this time of year you’ll have copperheads. It’s their favorite food

Years ago my Black Lab found a copperhead in the drive when wife took him out. Obligatory screaming from wife, but I dispatched it with a shovel.

For several weeks the Lab would not get withing 10 feet of where I killed the snake. Dog was saying that's some bad juju....

Never heard of a black snake eating venomous snakes but a king snake will and some of them are black. That's not gospel but what I've heard/read/observed.

Pretty sure pic above in post #5 is a Black Racer (black snake).
Have owned quite a few King Snakes of different varieties, and this looked a bit more like this:

Eastern Kingsnake. Only snake I've seen on my property in the last year, and only one I want to see

They are out more on roads and driveways this time of year because the nights are cooler and the asphalt/cement stays warmer longer.

Well butter my butt and call me a biscuit! I watched a video of a black racer taking a copperhead. Didn't know they were so aggressive.

We went to Cypress Gardens this past week end to the Swamparium. They had a Copperhead, I never had any idea they got that big.....I stomped one on the front porch last year when @old bear was visiting. I would Not have tried to stomp this one!!!

Billy that one act forever cured me of forgetting to close the bunk house door the second I walked outside:D

We had a Copperhead in our garage. And we are good about keeping the doors closed. Unfortunately, he committed suicide with snake shot twice.
