Ok, this is it.....

I’ve always sent just the gun (mags if the issue was mag related) and nothing else. I’ve always used a plain box and padded the gun well. Last one I sent in, I even removed the grips first. They have no need for the original case, fired rounds, manual, etc.
Ok, I'll take all that stuff out, but I have no other box for it, other than the original box. (Not sending my precious away in anything other than the plastic box with the nice foam bed, in bubble wrap, in another box! LMAO.)

The original grips were icky and I don't care if they ever come back. I'll slap the VZ ones back on the minute it gets home! Right now they can adorn the .45, till I figure out how to turn its original Springfield ones black instead of wood brown.

Personally, I would not send the original case. Not 100% sure you’ll see it again. FedEx will supply a box if you ask.

Once a gun is in the "rotation" for the range it gets a nice soft case. Do I need to keep the original plastic box? (I live in the middle of nowhere, I have no idea where a FedEx place is to get a box from.) lol.

I have sent back numerous pistols to two different producers. In each case, I sent the gun, PERIOD (gun, defined as what you hold in your hand when shooting). I always have some left over Amazon boxes and bubble pack and that’s what I use. If you can’t come up with a box, go buy one at the post office, Staples, hunt around in somebody’s trash and use newspaper for padding.

Or call FedEx, ask them to deliver a free box and pick up the shipment the following day.

send the mags you run with the gun

I cry often when I see all those damn plastic Grocks in the BST. It breaks my heart to see what gun culture has become. Now look what you made me do, I've soaked my keyboard & an unsewn Yaqui slide holster.

Look at these Colts for a bit, mebbe that'll help ya some...

...jus' remember, they ain't fer sale!

Ancient technology from before they discovered plastic. :D

Just know if you’re shipping FedEx, you’re supposed to ship it Priority Overnight, which is quite pricey.

That’s why a lot of people will have a local FFL ship it for them.

She has 3 different labels so I assume the shipment is being prepaid as warranty.

I just got done packing up my precious! (I see the heads shaking...I don't care!)

I put it in the original case, with its nice soft foam padding, with the original grips and magazine. (Don't care if the icky grips come home, nor the icky plastic box!) I bubble wrapped the case, put it in an Amazon box, added the paperwork and the email with the description of the issues, and Gorilla-taped it up. So very sad! LOL.

All I have to do now is put the shipping label on it and call for a pick-up.

Warranty! Yay! I have shipping labels from RIA.....

Be prepared that, in the unlikely event they need to send a replacement, it’ll have to go to an FFL; not directly back to you. Imagine how I know that. ;)
That's strange; I got a replacement gun from RIA and it was sent straight to my house (on 3-9-2012).

Several years ago I bought a parkerized RIA .38 Super 1911. That gun started self destructing in short order.

Gun was shipped back to RIA in box with all goodies by gun store I bought it from. With my name, phone number, email address, and mailing address IN THE BOX.

Two weeks later I received an email and phone call from Ivan at RIA. I was told, “It will be a while before we assemble more park’d Supers. We have some nickel ones in stock. Would you accept a nickel one instead?”

One week later Fed Ex left a box on my porch...bright and shiny nickel .38 Super RIA 1911.

Different serial number.

No gun store involved with the replacement.

Millie if I were you I would send everything back.

Do what you gotta do.

Well, I made the call, and FedEx will be here at some point to pick it up. (Sigh.) This really is IT...

Might have to call my best friend tonight and have a discussion about it! She helps me thru all my issues.....lol.

Think I have only sent 3 guns back to the manufacture. Bought a used Marlin 783 .22 Mag back in 83' in Texas and couple years later Marlin had a servicing offer. Mailed it and received it back at Ft Bragg in 86'. When I got to West Germany beginning of 88', walked the two miles to the range in the snow the first weekend there. Bought some CCI .357 Blaser ammo as I didn't want to chase my brass in the snow. Loaded up the Coonan Model B and first round had a case rupture that damaged the barrel. Mailed the top half back to MN and CCI paid for a new upper half. Later while still in Bad Tolz, FRG broke the firing pin on my 1946 dated Auto 5 12 ga shotgun shooting skeet. Sent the gun over to FN in Belgium for repair. That was costly! Should have fixed that one myself.

Sent a SIG 1911 back to SIG; once I got the RMA sticker I was good to go, but getting there was a pain in the butt. Like someone else said, it was super fast, like a 5-day turnaround. I sent it in a padded, cardboard box, they sent it back in a pistol case with a bunch of swag.

Jenny at RIA has been super patient with me, sending 3 shipping labels over the months. I told her this time it's for real and please fix my gun, it's my favorite and was my first 1911. Lol. So, just waiting for it to be picked up.....they can keep the nasty plastic case and awful rubber grips! It'll get a nice padded "case" once it gets back.

Live and learn, I guess. Somehow I expected them to pick up the box within a couple of hours, but I was just on the phone with customer service and she said they can't reschedule me now, I live too far out and unless I want to cancel today and re-do this for tomorrow, they'll be here by 8 PM. I called around 9 AM. Really?? They can't narrow it down and give you at least a reasonable window of time?
LOL.

OK they just took "my precious" away.....sigh....finally!

I don’t believe they launch someone on a Code Three run the moment you call. They fit you into a route with a driver whose path eventually takes him/her nearest your location.

I realize they're not going to rush to send someone out just to make me happy! LOL. I just figured within a few hours....anyway it's settled and the gun is on its way....

OMG thank goodness this gun is finally on its way...holy cow what a situation...how in the world did it take this long?!?!?!?!?!111

Just goofing Millie...I hope they get it fixed up right for you...and definitely before you have a stroke (that meme is hilarious).

Millie, there is some wrong or bad info in this thread. My first 1911 was an RIA in 9mm. It had so many malfunctions in the first 70 rounds it went back at RIA's insistence. My version had the great big roll mark on the slide. I sent it back with everything including a long letter about what it was doing. 10 days later I had an email from Customer Service that mine was being replaced.
Manufacturer's are allowed by the ATF to send repaired or replaced guns directly to the owner/private citizen with an ATF form listing the serial number of the replacement. FedEx delivered it to my door (with adult signature required) about three days after the email from CS.
The replacement gun had the new, smaller roll mark and had been cleaned, tested and tuned by one of their smiths. This all happened about 6 years ago and it has yet to have a problem, and, IMO, is a much better looking weapon.
If they replace your gun, the new one will be much better and you should be glad, not sad.

It is hilarious, isn't it?
Sending that gun off took literally months, and was hard to do, but if I want to do more competitions with it, I need it back by fall! That's going to be the gun I shoot first, so it can redeem itself for the disastrous malfunction-fest that my first match was! Lol. This winter is going to be awesome!

Well, I'll take whatever they send, and if it works, I will be happy. I hope it outlasts me! It's nice to know yours is still going well after 6 years, I'm encouraged!

I've bought guns and immediately sent them off to get work done. Guess that's better than getting attached. Sent the wife's XD-S off not long after she bought it. She wasn't happy but it happens.
Still own them both, still carried daily.

I am attached to that gun, but I also am attached to the .45....and the G19....and the p238.....and the Rossi.....lol....the Kel Tec, not so much! I'll just be glad to have A 1911 in 9mm back at some point!

I have had to send back several.

A keltec pmr 22 mag. After I got it back it never worked right again. Went back a total of 3 times. Sold it after it returned on the 3rd time.

A STI spartan in 9mm. It too went back 3 times before it functioned correctly. It too got sold.

A Springfield armory 1911 in 45 acp became the rear sight kept walking. When they had it I had them upgrade her to fiber optic sights, and golfball the front strap. That pistol never leaves :)

I think that's all of them lol

That's a lot of sending back multiple times!

I'm hoping my own Springfield 1911 .45 doesn't develop any issues, with anything, because I'm pretty attached to that one as well. It's got an adjustable rear sight, and so far it seems ok. I like it, and it only needs a little bump to the right and some yellow paint and I'll be good. The front sight will get the red paint, as usual.

I have had to send back a few over the years. Smith and Wesson 642 went back for finish issues. S&W Pro 1911 went back because it wouldn’t feed properly. CZ shadow 2 went back because the finish was flaking off. Had a Steyr S40 frame crack. Have sent multiple Sigs back P220, P320 P250 & GSR 1911.

Most were repaired and sent back. A few were replaced. They do not have the send a replacement to an FFL but many choose to and will tell you they have to but they are wrong.

I sent a couple recent production S&W back because the cylinders barely locked up. Got them back a few weeks later exactly the same. Ill never buy a new gun from them again-

You figure that after nearly 167 yrs, they could turn a bad one out (founded in 1852)

Dang, I'd have had several strokes if I had to send that many back.....lol...of course I have nowhere near as many guns as you guys do, so 2 breaking is pretty traumatic for me and my teeny "arsenal".....but lucky me, only one had to be sent back.
