New MD Announced, Next Match Scheduled for July 13th

Looking forward to trying out the new match format next month.

I suck at loading shotgun but I am excited about the addition. I, like others, am skeptical of the “classification by dress”. And I’m on the fence about the lack of scoring for accuracy.

I’ll give it a fair shot though.

ditto on every point here

GridlockH8, glad you made it! I was the the one in the bright lime green shirt! It was fun, kinda hot, but not too bad. I thought the stages were pretty fun, good amounts of movement.
A little update for our upcoming match. I was able to get 6 STS shotgun targets that used to be used for the PHA Cowboy matches. I have also purchased an additional 6 STS style shotgun targets from a local craftsman. He has three more partially finished. So we have 12, good, shotgun targets. These are great targets, consistent and easily reset. Hope to see you guys in a couple weeks.
BTW, who was the guy with the BAR?

Hell yeah, good to meet you. I’ll be at PHA next month, and I’m going to try to make Rowan again if I’m in town.

What are STS targets? I know the company STS that makes targets, but what shape are the ones for PHA?

I see what you guys are saying, and that was my concern going into this format, but I went back on Practiscore and these are the results from the last 3 matches I shot that actually post results online. Two are PHA and one is a USPSA at CGGR. Check out all the charlies and mikes- speed over accuracy wins most of these matches. I remember hearing a guy at sir walter raleigh years ago at a USPSA say “you can’t miss fast enough to win” and I still follow that mindset, but it doesn’t win very many matches for me. This is one reason I actually liked the old-old format at PHA where you got a 10 second bonus for clean stages, but thats been gone for at least 3 years I think. Regardless, this new (to me at least) format is still fun, and I like having another option for 3 gun matches around here.

Odd man out here, but I personally prefer the faster two on paper. Because it's faster to reset as well and easier to score.

Most 3gun is two on paper. I prefer the lack of clean bonus, too!

I've spent 5 minutes trying to find the same name on all three scorecards and gave up due to......not that smart. Help us out and throw down a name man!

Haha, its thomas mcgarity. The reason you dont see me on one picture is because i placed.....well, 45th in the USPSA at CGGR. But, I shot 4 Cs all day that match and was the only person in the single digits as far as Cs, Ds, etc. I’m a fast shooter, but I think I put too much emphasis on accuracy. In another screenshot from PHA, I hit one no shoot that cost me 4th place I think?

Good shooting man.

USPSA is humbling because it is VERY fast. Major is even faster, because C's are worth more than in minor.
Basically: with the high level of shooters in NC, you would have a very hard time finding a more competitive local match anywhere in the world, except maybe Sir Walter!
Those two matches make me feel like a newb turd.

Clearly your accuracy is great. Just learn to accept a lot more C's and you'll be doing great at USPSA it seems.

As of right now, I'll be making the July 13th match. Kelly and I are going to camp at the Crosswinds Campground right down the road that weekend, so I might as well come out and play, lol. See ya next month.

PS, I forgot to add, that if anyone wants to shoot/try out this format, and you do not have some gear or rifle, I can bring extra AR's, pistol (must be a Glock, haha) mags, mag holders, etc if you need them. Just supply your own ammo and I help out in any way I can.

Thanks man- I’ve been shooting competitively since around 2008, but I’ve still got a long way to go. For a while there I was shooting 3-5 matches a month and usually running drills at least one afternoon during the week, but then school, work, etc. got in the way. I’ve got an 8 week break before the fall semester starts back and plan on shooting as much as possible. But you’re right- both the 3GN and the USPSA at CGGR are nuts.

STS targets are the stackable shotgun targets that sit up on a stand about 1.5 feet off the ground. The stand is thick wire welded together. I've been told that was the name, could be wrong. STS, Shotgun targets, stackable... Maybe? Try as I might, I can't find an internet pic of one. They are great because they don't sit on the ground, old people like me don't have to reach over far to reset them.

Jeremy 2171, the BAR was COOL!!

It'll be next month for me, got to (prefer t0) wait on my shooting competition buddy to get back in town

Hey guys, been a busy week, been getting target stands cut, got the new pistol target stands assembled and taken up to the range along with the new shotgun targets. Everything is coming together.
Some ALPHA's guys and I will meet friday at the PHA gate at 3:00 to set up the match. Anyone who wants to help out is surely welcome.

Also, Fred Bowers will be doing registration in the big, new metal building at the start of the hill up to the tactical matches. Registration will start at 0730.
We are not set up, at this time to do Debit/Credit, cash or check only please.

Match is all I over, I'm fixin to take a nap. I asked the weather gods to give me clear skies with no rain, they did, but paid me back by making it about 1000 degrees! Heat aside, I thought it was a fun match and the guys shooting on my squad seemed to agree! I thought the serpentine through the barrels with shotgun was great.
Good, bad or ugly, hope to hear some feedback here.
Looked like we had 41 shooters! Pretty good for a 1st match.

Overall I enjoyed today. It was pretty fast paced. I kind of wish there had been a bit more shooting especially for the two gun guys like myself. The stages were laid out well I thought. It was hot but hell its July so that’s to be expected. Hope to get a shorty sometime and run the full match.

One thing that can help with that is to have the 2-gun divisions engage shotgun targets with pistol (where practical, of course, clay throwers would be a problem...). As it was, 2-gun shooters missed out on significant parts of the two 3-gun stages.

Thank you, Gene, for stepping up to run a match at PHA. I can say that this is not the match for me, however, I wish you guys the best.

What did you not like about it?

I didn't realize the PHA two-gun tactical match was in need of a makeover. I think the regulars that attended it came for what it was and liked it like that way. I started shooting another match on second Saturdays which was started with inspiration and assistance from PHA. They could have said they were going to do their match on the same Saturday, the third, and go head to head, but they did not. I respect that, plus it gave me an extra match a month. I may try it at some point but for now my second Saturdays are spoken for.

I think it was said best in the safety briefing: USPSA/IDPA is like the Grand Prix, this is more like drag racing.

I'm a Grand Prix guy.

If I read this correctly, I come up with USPSA/IDPA is a blend of fast & accurate gun handling, whereas this match is more of a speed match. (??)

Says you’ve got to be a member there to read the score sheets. Anyway to post them here?

Ditto... Post scores up here.

As a suggestion, also possibly look into using Practiscore as it is accessable for everybody to check match results easily.

Did 3 gun at the 8/10/2019 match
1st stage: my hearing protection fell apart while shooting rifle and couldn't finish the stage.
2nd stage: tried to reload my rifle with a pistol mag
3rd stage: reloaded my AR15 with the mag upside down
4th stage: forgot to fire my shotgun string

Still had a great time! The most fun I've had at a match in a long time. Maybe next month I'll roll the throttle a little bit off WOT so I don't make so many mistakes.
