some.of you may or may not know we have a family pet going through some very serious health issues right now, and I wanted to.take a minute to say, if you don't have health insurance for your pet get it.
to be honest I'd never really thought that much about the cost of pet care till recently.
If you have to rush your pet to a emergency animal hospital in the middle of the night be prepared for sticker shock.
They asked for 400.00 just to begin treatment and after it was determined he had to stay they asked for another thousand.
We picked him up this this morning total cost so far and he goes back next week for more test is almost 5800
My regular vets office sold my my wife what she thought was pet insurance, something called the paw plan that we'd been paying 50 a month for ,but when the wife presented the card it was explained this was a plan tailored for our local vet and wasn't accepted at this animal hospital.
The.duty of finding a new pet insurer now has been handed to me , I believe her exact words were, you're so smart you figure it out.
So as soon as I find out that a pre-existing condition doesn't make it a no go I plan to move one of the larger national insurers who's plans run between 30 to 50 a month and the paw plan will be no more.
If you have a plan that's good, a heads up would be a appreciated

Pet insurance will result in higher costs for those who don't buy in to this.
That is what always happens.
Lasik eye surgery got cheaper over time because it is not covered by insurance.
If it ever gets covered, price for uninsured will skyrocket.

For some maybe 5800 is a drop in the bucket but for me it was a huge chunk of my savings.
It's like a firearm I'd rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it to insure the safety of my pet

Best to get the pet insurance at 11 months old to get the puppy rate. You want an insurance that always gives you the same tier rate from when you sign up.

I use Trupanion but not sure how good it is for an older dog with preexisting conditions.
I do the max deductible and it doesn't reset for the same condition.

A friend once told me insurance is not something you want to "win" on. Great way of looking at it.

I know I'm a horrible person.
I'd never thought that about you
TILL NOW
Lol
No I get it, growing up my dad dispatched sick animals as humanly as possible, there was no money for vets.
And that's the way he was raised.
But accepting responsibility as caregriver
For my small dog when I adopted him i knew what I was getting into. He'd had health problems before we adopted him and we knew they could be a problem down the road,
So if it means cashing out my IRA or refinancing the house but hopefully pet insurance would save me the need for this , I'll give him every chance.
His love is unconditional, but so is ours

I'd put my dog down if it needed a 5800 surgery. I know I'm a horrible person. Their love is forever but unfortunately they are only temporary in our lives.

Nothing horrible about that. I had to make that very decision and the the cost and the pain of recovery for my pup was too much. My family is welcome to make that same decision for me and actually I have a document that gives them that right.

Not a drop in the bucket for me.

My brother is a veterinary orthopedic surgeon. His most frequent client type is the pet owner who thinks leashes are cruel or use those 25 foot tether spool. You can guess why they end up being his client.

Second is probably pure breeds with genetic issues like hip dysplasia.

That sucks most likely the anesthesia killed the dog. It is always a possibility for dogs and people.

You are a horrible person. :p

I have in the past spent money on dogs that were very important to me but there comes a point where it is just ridiculous.
The thought of putting your family’s finances at risk just doesn’t make sense.

Had a neighbor come ask me if l’d seen her cat. She just got home from the vet were they had spent several hundred dollars on it. It had run away the same afternoon. :)

And cats ain’t worth 50 cents.

Took our dog to the groomer and they woman had a cat the can't walk that she takes to have acupuncture done three times a week. I'll not be taking the dog back to that kind of crazy.

Who did you you take them too? VRHOH in Hickory off 321?

Message me as my girlfried works at an animal hospital in Lenior so I'll ask her when she wakes up

If I take the animal I take the responsibility. I retired and have now gone back to work because of pets, can't stand to see abandoned or lost pets on the road so I pick them up, can't leave thrown away pets @ the rescue, so i'm not allowed to visit rescues anymore. I have 15 dogs, 5 cats and 3 snakes now all rescues. Some were because of medical issues (I think the Carolina Vet Specialties in Greensboro is considering naming the new wing after me) some were throwaways, some were lost, ALL are loved.
The number of fur kids we have now is the lowest we have had in years, but we are getting older so it is not as easy to care for them. Vacations are a distant memory because we can't be away from home overnight since we haven't found anyone we would trust to take care of them.
So that said you may think i'm crazy for feeling this way about animals that are only temporary in our lives, but they love us unconditionally and as long as possible I will take care of them. I will not let them suffer needlessly and have had to make the decision too many times to end a life when there was no quality of life, but as long as they are not in uncontrollable pain and there is still that joy of life, the money doesn't matter it is just a thing.. "you can't take it with you and you don't want to leave it for the kids". YMMV and I respect that!

Im in the horrible category too. I’m all about preventative maintenance but anything past that is alway a question of am I willing to pay this much for a pet.

I figure if I let the government rob me of thousands to give to 3rd generation welfare bastards just so they can grow up to kill themselves with drugs or kill other people for drugs, the least I can do is splurge on my furry buddies. It's no question of which is worth it.

This thread kinda veered offcourse a little, but one thing I wanted to make.clear is that I wasn't ripping on the vet for the cost of the care .
My.dog is alive right now and if they hadn't cared for him he wouldn't be.
He was in bad shape when we got him there, they kept him alive till they figured out what was wrong , so he's at home today napping beside me, a bargain at any price

Don’t buy those policies please. It’s a damn scam. Same for prepaid legal services. These people get there money and then spend it. When you present the policy they come up with fees not on the policy to cover getting the monthly and services rendered that day. Same with prepaid legal. Once they get your money they aren’t gonna do crap for you.

You didn’t answer if you went to that shithole emergency hospital on Hwy 321 in Hickory. They’re ripping people who love there pets. They’re living like kings. They have an apartment in Hickory furnished to go take naps while they wait for the next money haul. People go over there for emergency services where they are asked to pay a wad up front then wait up to 4 hours for service. They will not tell you that when you come in. By that time your vet may be open. I like that so sad quite funeral home voice they use to lure your wallet from you.

Certain vets used to push the pet insurance, which im ok with, just so my vet takes it. Just work it out with your vet ahead of time to avoid any problems later down the road. ASK YOUR VET what they recommend. Some places such as Banfield push a certain brand that they accept......but i generally stay away from banfield. Like said, get it early in their life if you choose so. We did not, and we have spent some coin on our fur babies....... But i think we came out ok in the long run. We had one who tore her ACL, which we had repaired ($$$$$).........and we had to crate her for a few weeks which broke my heart because I hated to see her lose her freedom, but it was necessary. At any rate I bought a huge crate and an air mattress, i slept in the floor beside her for about six weeks, until she was ok to roam around the house freely without her jumping on the furniture. You do what you do for the dogs you love.....

We never believed in pet insurance since we always felt somehow they would get around it and find something not covered. After losing our last dog and paying quite a few dollars trying to save her we decided to go another route. When we got another dog who was about 10 weeks old what we did was put $50.00 a month away (the cost of a few boxes of ammo) just in case something major happened. She will be 13 at the end of this year and right now we have over $7200 in her emergency fund so we're not worried if something major happens and at her age we're sure it will eventually happen. The hardest part was not touching her pet fund for all these years. :):)

All opinions here seem normal, although spending into family financial crisis is a bit extreme I can see how you get there in an emergency situation. Had a coworker that gave his cat an IV every few days, I thought that was a bit out there.

Now if any of you get mothers day cards or fathers day cards or birthday cards from your pet, well then you’re a whack-a-doodle.

My daughter is checking on insurance that covers a preexisting condition and so far with no luck.

If she finds one I all let you know.

She works for a company that sells pet insurance.

Appreciate the effort.

The big thing with pet insurance is that it takes away all the other factors when making that big decision on your pet. Yeah $5800 requires a discussion about age, future quality of life, etc. The decision for your best friend is easier at $500-1000 or whatever deductible you pick.
