Travelling....

Condolences, and be careful amongst the crazies out there! (I'm not a big fan of people either.)

Chuck - what do you not like?
I dont mind travel, dont mind airports.
Flying out in 36 hours actually

Once I am on the plane I am good to go. I don't like the crowds, I don't like the TSA, I don't like the prices at any of the food places, none of that.

As for driving, I would actually really like to, but it's a 13-hour trip, and my back just can't do those anymore. At least until I get surgery, of which I am kicking the can.

I am safely back on terra firma in Biloxi, where it is a good 8 degrees cooler.

For me it’s the arriving an hour earlier than need be. It’s the taking off everything. It’s the TSA that seems to want to search me every time. Does a quota hit me for a search always? Is there something that comes up in a ID check?

I remember when flight attendants were skinny hot babes. Now they are old women and dudes. It was fun when you could check out asses going up and down the aisle as entertainment. What is the most annoying? Told they over booked and everyone was a show so you are getting no boarding and a reschedule? Why are companies allowed to overbook every flight by a couple people? That’s BS.

knock on wood - never been on an overbooked flight before.
Yes, taking off shoes and belt is not fun and sort of a pain the butt to have to deal with three more things while carrying your bags etc

But it's a few minutes and it's over.

Safe travels friend, and my condolences. I wish you were traveling under better circumstances.

I really dislike the TSA security theater. I take the minimum stuff with me when flying, so I don’t have to carry so much, especially if I have to run through the airport. But I STILL have to pull everything out and take everything off, because those items are common to virtually all travelers. Damn terrorists and legislators...

I HATE FLYING!!!

I don't like crowds, airports, TSA and everything that goes with it. I did just enough business travel in my working life that I hope to never have to do it again.

That said, I have recently grown weary of the 7 hour drive to FL. But, when I look closely at the time spent arriving early to get through security and the requisite inconveniences, waiting for luggage at the destination, dealing with car rental, etc..., there is but a small amount of time saved with far more discomfort.

Anything less than a 8 car ride is a no brainer car ride for me. I can drive 4 hours a day in my job.

I'm currently in the airport in Atlanta waiting for my connection to Biloxi Mississippi, where I'm attending a funeral tomorrow.

It just reminds me why I do not like traveling, why I do not like airports, and why I do not like people.

I'm looking forward to getting there and being with my family.

I used to fly every week. The money was nice with that job, but I do like being home every night these days. I feel your pain.

And then you probably need to rent a car anyway!

Condolences on your loss.
As a lifetime platinum member on AA I feel your pain and disgust with flying. Best thing that happened is now I chose if I want to fly not the job dictating it.

I despise flying. At one point in the Army, I'd racked up so many miles on Delta, I was able to upgrade 5 or 6 Atlanta-Paris flights to Business Class. Hate crowds & all the TSA bullshit. Hell, at the height of the Cold War & red terror a legit concern, West Germany was less of a PITA.

When I retired, I told the ol' lady that if we can't drive or take a train or boat there, I don't need to be there.

Same here. My line of demarcation is 10 hours. A lot of times I drive anyway. Working in Memphis? Drive 9 or 10 hours 1 way. Working in fort Smith, Arkansas? Drive 13 hours 1 way. Vacation in Destin FL? Drive 10 hours WITH WIFE AND DAUGHTER IN CAR . LOL...I actually don't mind driving at all. I've driven 3 hours 1 way for a gun deal...lol

I hear these sissy’s saying “man I got to take a day off from that trip back from Myrtle Beach. That’s a long way.” There is not a place in NC that it’s a long way. For a dozen years I drove four kids, wife, and a dog to Sanibel Island in Southwest Florida. 17 hours each way with gas, lunch, and pee breaks. Women need a lot of pee breaks.

Last October, we drove 16 hours straight to my dad's place in KS. Spent 2 nights, then left for a 10 hour drive to CO at 0300. 4 days in CO & same route in reverse. Like I said, I really don't like to fly.

I was on a plane once and the young attendant wearing a short skirt apparently wanted something out of the overhead. I was sitting there and she walked up and without saying anything quickly smiled and proceeded to straddle my arm which was on the isle arm rest and put something very warm against it.

I love driving.
Hell, yesterday I drove about 4 hours to NOWHERE. I just drove. Got a coffee (ended up getting two, made a stop later) and started off going nowhere, seeing where roads led to, exploring. I love it.

But when I have the option of flying and being there (with an hour layover) in 4 hours OR driving 12 hours (not counting pee/food/gas stops)... It's an easier choice for me.

I fly out very early tomorrow morning. Many of you will be up by then, knowing this group, but most of the Triad will still be asleep when the wheels leave the tarmac. To be able to be in another country before places stop serving breakfast and, essentially, giving me another full day in the city...I think that's rad.

Agree. When I flew to the UK I tried (sometimes things didn't work out) to leave a day earlier. That way I'd get off the plane about 9am local time. Got to relax and stay up as long as possible, get a great nights sleep to shake off the 'jet lag'. Sight seeing was not the reason to leave early as I'd be there for two weeks at a time. The middle weekend was for that.

I’ve been on three commercial flights in the last couple years. All of them miserable. I would much rather hop on my bike for a road trip or the truck before I ever get back on a plane. I told my wife if we couldn’t drive I wasn’t going, she can do as she pleases.

Flying solo usually doesn't bother me, cept the shoulder room. Flying with my wife can be trying, same for driving long distances.

TSA is pretty dumb, the different requirements airport to airport mostly, especially when the sign says one thing and then they start shouting for you to do another, usually with regard to shoes. Belt, wallet, keys in carry on, almost never an issue. They have searched long and hard twice, I would guess once for a DVD player they never found, and another time for a piece of brass, never found. Been swabbed, patted down, and hand scanned numerous times, always quick and painless even when something was detected.

Any trip beyond six hours I'll probably consider flying. I do prefer the "freedom" of my own vehicle and all the stuff I want.
