Unfortunately, I put this off for a while.

I got my welcome package today after putting it off for a long time.... My friends say it is a good investment and you get some discounts. I got a free blue tooth speaker for my bathroom, hooray!

Yes, to you young guys, I'm old as h@ll.

Iā€™m so old I canā€™t even remember back to when I joined AARP. :(

Iā€™m not sure Iā€™ve ever received any benefit from my membership. Just a magazine with deals on Viagra and ā€œIā€™ve fallen and I canā€™t get upā€ systems. :(

I know that Denny's gives a discount as I've been there with my day.

You really don't hafta be that old...they start banging on you when you turn 50.
I don't know if it matters to you Bradman...but their politics are un-apologetically left wing. I suppose it wouldn't be so bad if they didn't use part of your fees to support restrictions on gun ownership.

I disregarded AARP mailings for the past 20 years so I am actually interested if yā€™all think there are benefits.
Also, isnā€™t AARP anti natural rights organization?

Nice.... Never knew about them. Will check it out.

I feel bad for joining. Didn't know this.

@Bradman don't feel bad buddy! I didn't mean it like that. I'd go ahead and run the membership for the year and then maybe consider other options.
AARP does have more of a footprint across the country than AMAC. If you do a lot of traveling, hotels, restaurants and such, you might be able to save some coin using the AARP card.
AMAC is coming on strong though and discount choices for them are becoming more widely available.

Not at all. I am furiously against any opposition the the 2nd or many other things that I am learning about. I'm going to try to get my money back. They probably have a grace period. I'll join AMAC. I feel like a fool. I just called my dad with my findings as well. I will share what I've learned.

The only thing AARP offered that interested me was a 5%APR credit card. I thought about it for a minute and threw the offer away. They gave up on me after that. It has been going on 20 years since I received any mail from them. I'm not yet eligible for medicare and am looking into my options for supplemental insurance.

I think Iā€™ve done my part to take them down. I had a membership for one year before I knew about their anti-gun stance. Iā€™m pretty sure they have sent me mail that costs more than they made off that one year.

I've never asked for or responded to any of their mail and yet still they send it.
I toss it in the trash.

You can use their ā€benefits, even without joining.

In places like Dunkin they offer a discount on coffee with your card. Just use the fake card you get with the mailings. The person behind the counter will never know or care.

As for AARP as an organization, when they started sending me crap, I looked into them and couldnā€™t find a single benefit I cared about. I donā€™t drink coffee, travel, or need a large-number dumb-phone.

And as a lobbying organization, I disagree with many of their positions. In fact, Iā€™m of a mind that old people shouldnā€™t be allowed to vote, just like young people canā€™t.

Somewhere on the Internet is a phone number to opt-out of AARP mailings. I called and it works. They donā€™t list it on their website. Iā€™ll see if I can find it.

BUT, if you really disagree with the organization, just keep getting the mailings, as it costs them money with no benefit to them. If you really want to stick it to them, make sure to mail back any postage paid envelopes they send. Fill the envelope with junk, so they pay more postage. ;)

Most have figured out the mailing junk back in their post paid envelopes so they have you sign up on line now. I will have to open this one and see if it has one in it.

Just checked AARP website and saw where they urged congress to support ACA better known as Obama care. That cost me my insurance. Had to change because of it and it cost a lot more and did a lot less. Oh and the envelope did have a post paid return envelope in it. Searching for junk to mail back now.

Good for you on taking your business elsewhere. I too try not to contribute to organizations who work against me and people like me. It's probably more impactful to do what you're doing- Join, then take your business back.

I'd rather spend a little more and NOT help the business of people who actively work to take my rights away.

You "dun good".

They are also big pushers of Obamacare.

Send them a bunch of gun catalogs. Write ā€œAARP = American Association of Really Pissed peopleā€ inside. :p
