Looking to tap into the group and see who has used what with good experience without breaking the bank. Live in the country so options are limited to att dsl for wired options and ready to kick them to curb for horrible service and speed for the price they charge with it looking to only get worse. So exploring to see what anyone has used hot spot wise or satelite wise and had good luck. Main usage is email and surfing the web but would like to be able to use it for streaming of net flicks or something of that nature if it does not become cost prohibitive from data usage.

The dsl is probably your best bet. Satellite services are best for people in remote areas with NO other options.

No access to North State?

Seems to me North State is doing everything possible to compete with AT&T. Iā€™d check again.

Dsl threw att is becoming worthless is the issue. Its not reliable and horriblely slow. As in extremely lucky to get over 1 mbps on a good day.

Satellite has a pretty low threshold as far. as GB per month. Not very cost effective for streaming.

Satellite sucks for streaming. Youā€™ll buffer constantly and blow your bandwidth budget with one movie. Youā€™d be better off with a high data plan from Verizon.

This. Mom finally cancelled hers because the money she was getting charged wasnā€™t worth the trouble

Kevin, I upped our phone plan to unlimited so mom could use her phone as a hotspot, and I gave her my mifi box to use as well. With the unlimited plans you only get so many gigs of hotspot but at least she can watch it without having to worry about it playing or not. I use my work phone for a hotspot if I wanna watch tv. Thatā€™s our only option besides Hughesnet and the neighbor I know that has it says it sucks.

@Burt Gummer the hot spot option is best option I have found so far as well just havenā€™t picked a carrier

My nephew also bought and is using one (he has Centurylink at 6Mbps. Actually had two of these lines but dropped one when he got the Nighthawk.) He used 340GB of data last month with no slow down. I talked to him last week and he said connected it (hard wired instead of wireless) it into his Xbox and was getting over 100Mbps at times on it with the fastest being 160.

So for someone who isnā€™t smart enough to put one of these together, how hard is it? Iā€™d like to try something like this for my mom but sheā€™s even more tech challenged than me

It's relatively easy to do. If you're just using a mifi it's easier to set up than most modems. If you run into any issues you can msg/call and I can walk you through it.

This. Not hard at all. Before buying the items needed I would check the signal by using your cell phone though.

For those that have used one Does the same night hawk model work on att or verizon or is there a particular one for each provider? Also can it be plugged in with a wall wart to a wall outlet or only work on battery power? Pretty sure I can get att but know I can get verizon service at the house so need need to look at plans and who is most likely to throttle it.

Just double check the nighthawk. I purchased it and it wasn't compatible in the states and it wouldn't let me return it.

The Nighthawk is AT&T. It "may" work but will require some effort and it being unlocked. It comes with a battery and wall charger/plug. For home internet use it is recommended to remove the battery and upgrade the wall plug to an Anker brand. Good thing about the battery is if the lights go out you still have internet. Or if the kids want to use the internet while driving down the road on vacation, etc.

Don't know much about the Mobley internet for $20 but came across this a couple of days ago:

I have one if the Mobley devices on my shared unlimited plan. Works fine for what we need it for (not a home internet replacement).

Need to stop by the store to see if I can get a stand-alone plan, as Iā€™m about to max out the number of devices I have for a shared data plan.

Ok you WiFi geeks.... (itā€™s a term of endearment)

Got an email from Onstar today offering ā€œunlimitedā€ mobile att hotspot for $15 month. Do I have to have a mobley or will any att compatible device work???? Plan to use it in the house. If I have to get a Mobley they make power cords for the wall to plug them in to.

Sincerely,

Be wary of the term unlimited. Sometimes it's unlimited but not all high speed.

I know the comments about satellite are a couple months old - but since I have Hughes Net I thought I would offer my perspective.

When I first moved here, it was completely out of the question. Speeds were not good enough and there was a hard limit on data. But after 3 years of lousy DSL that would go out anytime it rained, and progressively longer times to restore service (3 days and a call to a regional VP on the last one), I decided it was time to look at alternatives.

Hughes now offers a much better plan. It's a two-tier system (or maybe 3): you get 50GB unrestricted, full speed. After that you are throttled, but there is no upper cap on total data usage. There is also an additional 50GB unrestricted off-hours (like 10pm-6am).

When I've done a speed test, I run around 25+mbps unthrottled, and 1.5-3mbps throttled. Still much better than I was getting with DSL.

The biggest problem with it is latency. Since the signal has to travel at least 50,000 miles to the satellite and back, latency is pretty high. My ping times average around 750ms. This is the biggest problem for gamers, not as bad for other uses - but some streaming services don't play well with high latency.

As for streaming: Netflix is usually good, it just takes a bit longer to initially connect and load. Youtube is usually fine, sometimes has buffering issues. Amazon Prime works ok. Hulu is out - I couldn't even get anything to load. Vimeo works fine.

As for other applications: I'm a programmer and I work from home. The biggest effect I've encountered is when I'm logged in to a remote system - because of the latency I type half a line before I even see anything. It can be mildly annoying at times. Meetings are usually fine, sometimes the audio breaks up.

Between work and streaming, I usually hit the limit around the 12th of each month.

It's like satellite TV in that the service goes out in bad weather. But it's surprisingly stable and tends to come back pretty quickly. Longest outage I can remember was about an hour. Usually goes out during the heaviest parts of bad thunderstorms.

I also got the phone service, cost is around $150/month for both. More than other services, but there really isn't anything comparable for me.

Not sure how this works but if they just give you a sim card you might can use it in a cradlepoint style router but I would be curious if they throttle you after a certain amount of data usage like others. Truely Unlimited data can be had but usually comes from older plans.

Resurrecting this. My sisters internet (Centurylink) went out 1 1/2 weeks ago. They had to run a new line. She has a Nighthawk MR1100 hot spot like I do so she had a back up. I woke up this morning and my internet (Centurylink) is out. Same symptoms my sister was having. I'm sure I will need a new line ran. My Nighthawk MR1100 is working great. Nice internet option for those in rural areas or for a back up.

Connected a Linksys Velop wifi mesh system to the hot spot last week and the speed is so much better. Usually 90-140Mbps. Evening and afternoons when the cell tower has more traffic it dips to 60-90. Still faster than the 20Mbps from Centurylink. No where near as fast as some of you, but for a back up system that is portable it'll do. Also ordered another Nighthawk MR1100 last week to get a postpaid plan set up. $20/month plus taxes as opposed to $35 for the current prepaid. Going to let the kids try it out a couple of months and if it works fine I'll try to get the prepaid changed over to a postpaid (have 2 postpaid) and maybe cancel Centurylink until a better internet option is available around here.
