If Senate Bill 1273 Passes You Could Be Fined $15,000 for Sharing Memes on Social Media

Article paints a "sky is falling" picture for the future of "memes" and free speech online.

Not sure how serious we should take this, but it does seem odd. If it is as bad as it sounds, the fact that Tillis co-sponsored it... well that really isn't a surprise at this point.

This article goes into it all fairly well.

Born too early to get in on phreaking, and just the right time to become an underground, countercultural purveyor of outlawed cat pictures.

These people need to learn that short of shutting it down, you can't police the internet with any sort of sucess.

This is what happens when people who don't understand something try to make laws about it.

When I saw "industry-friendly" in the bill's description, I understood Tillis' involvement.

So a group of 3 people is going to rule on all this? Either they will instantly be backlogged for 30 years and so none of it will matter, or they will wild-ass guess everything to stay caught up and it will be devastating.

On the plus side it MIGHT just kill social media, so it's got that going for it.

Why would the government kill it's best spying tool?

The "real" reason .Gov want to rid memes has nothing to do with copyrights.

Memes are seen as images..not text. Social media cannot set up auto monitoring for "offensive" words and speech like they can with text... it's a form of censorship. So memes are not as easily scrubbed as text.

I'll beg to differ...
There are camera software that can read words on pictures and translate. If it can do that, it can search words to monitor.

You can pretty easily train AI to scan a picture for text.

If you want to get into conspiracy-theory-level stuff, this would also include VPN providers, who would then also be required to give up the end-user.
All the more reason to use a foreign based VPN. I’ve even been considering moving my Linode box to a different country, preferably one not so friendly to Uncle Sugar.

I hope you’re kidding and don’t believe this.
My six year old phone can not only read any text on a picture, it can Google the results, or translate it into other languages, while keeping the font and background intact.

I don’t think the NSA is having any problems reading the block-lettering found on most memes.
