Figs

Only thing I ever used a fig tree for was to use the hollowed out stems to make corn cob pipes when I was a kid so I could smoke some Rabbit Tobacco.:D

@gunbelt
Find yourself some REAL eye-talian prosciutto. Peel the figs, cut in half, wrap each half with prosciutto and you can thank me next time we see each other. ;)

My Mama had a tree in her back yard. My Brother always cut her grass and everytime he did he told her "On the way home from your funeral I'm comin by here and cut that damn tree down!" Seems it wore him out cutting too close on occasion.

Oh ,the outcome?? She's gone...tree's still making figs.

Halved, grilled and drizzled with honey.

Halved, grilled, added to any salad.

Like @Jeppo said; halved, stuffed with riccota salada, wrapped in bacon or proscuitto and grilled.

Fig jam
The Olde Dragon made jam for a couple years. We didn't have the heart to tell her it was inedible.
I have a theory that glue could be made from the sap of these things.
My produce guy is here in Indian Trail & he sales them as fast as I can get them two him. About 250 lbs last year @$2 lb.

I am suffering fig withdrawal this year. My daughter and SIL sold their house with the fig trees. I will either plant one of my own or find another @gunbelt type close by here.

You'd have to come get em. Or I'll be glad to chop a lower limb off these things already have roots & you can't killem.

I don't care for them either. I don't even like fig newtons.

Although figs are the sweetest fruit there is sugar wise.

Love ‘em, didn’t know they could be grown in NC.

I like figs and our trees produce a lot, however the birds get them all.

I couldn't kill one, but the danged thing wouldn't grow in my yard.

Grandma used to make strawberry/fig preserves...... you'd have a different outlook on figs if you'd ever had the chance to try any.

I love figs/fig preserves. We have 3 0r 4 bushes that are doing good.

They're social plants. Put em close to the house or shop and speak to em as you come and go and they do just fine.
I cuss mine & it obviously likes it.
This one spent 4 years in a pot with no care. It only ever had 3-4 leaves until he put it in the ground. It's planted in the wettest part of my yard. And just morning sun.

An Lord have mercy at the itching you'll do during & after picking a bushel.

I think my trees have Curt's beat. Anybody around here is welcome to come pick as many as they want. I like 'em, but you can only eat so many at a time and they don't keep for a damn.

Dry them. Then they will keep for a couple thousand years.

How big does a fig tree get? This has piqued my interest in getting a fig tree.

Fresh figs are great but I can only eat a few at a time so I wouldn’t know what to do with all those. A pint would easily last me a week.

Most I have seen, and the ones I have, are more like big bushes. They lower limbs laying on the ground will take root and the base will continue to grow outward. Depending on the severity of the winter, a lot of the existing limbs will die back.

There was a fig tree in the bottom of the Grand Canyon at Phantom Ranch that was easily 18" diameter.

Mine are about 15-17ft high and maybe 10-12ft wide as far as bushiness after 10 years. Funny, they started growing much faster after I built my outdoor shower nearby and planted other figs near them. They really do prefer being near other trees and having a building to grow against (which is what I always heard growing up).

I will share what little information I know. I do believe there are different "variants", so make sure you learn about the specific type you get.

The one at my mother's house in High Point was planted about 30 years ago right outside of her kitchen window. It has gotten as big as 15 ft tall and grown into a semi-circle with a radius of 8 feet. We have cut it back at least three times to where it was only 18 in tall and only had a 2 feet radius. It just keeps coming back stronger and stronger. It's on the south side of the house, gets no shade, and doesn't get any extra water.

It was cut from a fig bush that was at my grandmother's house since the 1930s. I can't tell you about its status, as it currently sits under the 311 bypass.

Mom loves figs, eats them off-the-vine. (The ones that the squirrels and the birds leave for her.) I never touch them.

The blueberries, pears, and cherries draw in the birds and squirrels here, the figs are for bringing in wasps, hornets, yellow jackets, and damned European hornets.

Mine is about 16'x16'. Hasn't gained much height at all in 3-4 years. It gets a foot or better wider every year.. I've never had any die back, but have chopped some width off several times. I cut it down with a lawn mower when it was small & it came back with twice as many limbs. This tree is what i was told to be a Brown Turkey Fig which produce bigger Figs than most. If you allow them to ripen completely on the tree the birds will get em. I try to pick all with any color starting when I pick as they will ripen inside.

Bet someone, somewhere, somehow could turn them into some sort of spirit for drinking?
