Planning a vacation for end of the year on the outer banks. Besides the Wright Memorial and Lost Colony, anyone have first hand recommendations for interesting things to do in the area?

I have a travel guide in the mail, but I'll take a personal suggestion over a brochure.

Kitty Hawk and Kill Devil Hills is great area with lots to do. I like the Duck/Corolla area for a laid back vibe.

What are you into doing?

Outdoors, eating, might take the wife fishing. Anything with history. Heck, we even like playing Putt-Putt.

Drive down hwy 12 to the end and take a 30 min boat ride. Drive a little more and go to Howard's Pub.

If you're going to the OBX for vacation you are going to the wrong end. Buxton Cape Hatteras Avon is all good. You go to relax and fish. Not so much entertainment.

NE OB is great for kayaking, if ya got someone who can fetch you after a one-way trip in the sound. That's where all the wildlife is out there, anyway.

Stop at Pop's Bar and Raw bar on the way down. You can get a taste of the locals there.

Jockey's Ridge. I like to go at sunset.

Bring your guns and go to the OBX gun club visitors are $15.00 a day http://obxgc.com/ you have the OBXH2O water park they have a 1 week pass which is a good deal. there are a few putt putt places. The lost colony show in Manteo is good. The NC aquarium also in Manteo

Pop’s is a cool little place. Spend a day on Ocracoke rent a golf cart let the wife shop, eat at Howard’s. Go to the docks around 6 when the boats are getting back in and check out the catches. If you want to fish the head boat runs like $150 for a day of fishing just check and see what days they are running. And the aquarium in Manteo, there’s also an awesome little sand which place there called The Hungry Pelican.

Depending on how late in the year you are going, some of the things mentioned may not be open. I believe the Lost Colony only stays open through August and some of the restaurants close up for the winter.

We (my wife, daughter 12 and I ) spent a week out there two years ago. Jennettes Pier in Nags Head is cool. I would do the hang gliding thing at Jockeys Ridge state park if I went back. We spent several hours hiking Jockeys Ridge and had an absolute blast. We drove all over 4wd beach looking at horses one day, they were just everywhere around the houses and whatnot. We went and seen all the light houses out there (except Lookout b/c it was a ferry) and climbed Hateras. Was our best vacation ever.

I second the hang gliding recommendation above. Go to Kitty Hawk Kites Hang Gliding School and take some intro flights. Hang Gliding over the sand has got to be a blast.
