Let's drop the weight challenge

I was 224 this morning. It was 283 in April. My wife and I rode our bikes 11 miles on the local rails to trails earlier while my son was at a birthday party. It wasn't as bad as I was expecting.

I had a cheat week last week on vacation. Diet was mostly followed but I did eat a little bread, some cheese grits, and a couple of ice creams. It netted a +6 for the week.

My new favorite meal is a burger salad. Order a nice fancy burger, hold the bun, and put it right on top of a garden salad. No dressing. Just let the burger juices and its topping be the dressing.

Went to see Nephrologist today, found out I've lost 40 #s since March 25 of this year! I guess the "diabetes death" talk really took hold.

I'll be glad when get moved closer to the new job. I'll be able to get back to swimming every day.
Right now I'm going every other day. Getting up at 2:45am every day would be a bit exhausting.
Doing a 9/80 schedule. Every other Friday off.
Ate take out too much while the house was showing.
Scale going back in the correct direction again now that we are home coming again.
No meat for a few days,. Just lamb. (Some of you will get that reference)

For me, when I hit a plateau, changing up my food, different protein, different vegetables, and adding more heavy lifting in the gym helped break it.

I’m 32 and up until 30 I could always eat whatever I wanted and struggled to gain weight if I tried. Well work & life were stressing me out so my Dr put me on some meds. I hate Rx but it did help.

Unfortunately it also caused me to gain over 30lb in a year. My cholesterol was also looking terrible. I tried a bunch of small changes, cutting back on sugars, cutting back on carbs, running 2-3 days/wk etc etc, nothing seemed to work.

Finally, I found a natural alternative to the Rx and it works. Sadly my body still wanted to be 195+/-. By this time I’ve made a bunch of changes to my diet, tried a few different exercise routines, and still couldn’t lose more than 3lb which is negligible.

I decided to begin a modified intermittent fasting about 5wks ago. I eat a small breakfast as 10a, refrain from large lunches, and don’t eat anything after 630pm. Since then I’ve been losing about 2-3lb/wk. I was up to 198, now down to 186. Trying to lose another 16 and maintain it!

That late breakfast would kill my day.

It wasn’t easy but I stay super busy at work, so I just try not to think about it. Sometimes I’ll get cravings around 930, so the 30min wait isn’t too bad.

I usually skip breakfast and eat lunch around 1-2pm when I am doing IF. Once I get adjusted to it, I don't get hungry and I feel better too.

It'll get moving. Not really a plateau as I am just starting back on it.

Fasting and walking had been a magic bullet for me. I’m on cholesterol medication, but that is likely to go a way after my next appointment in 6 months.

I’m trying to get to 175, I was 236 at my fattest, and now at 190.

I fast a minimum of 16 hours a day, sometimes hitting 20 to 23 hours.

I have been thinking about trying to skip breakfast all together and wait until lunch at 12-1230 since that would get me up to 17-18hr fasting. The problem is that when I tried this early on, I got major headaches. I think it was just too much right off the bat.

Intermittent fasting helps a lot, you just have to figure out when you can do it that won't make you feel awful

Fasting, IF, just another form of calorie restriction. I'm not saying it doesn't work--it does--it is not like there is a secret science behind it. I tend to lose weight when I have minimal breakfast, no snacks, and reasonable lunch and dinner. Add minimal sugar, and it really takes off the pounds.

Yes, no\low carbs and sugar really is paramount to weight loss.

No, there is science behind fasting and what your body does during extended fasting periods.

A growing body of evidence suggests that in the absence of ready supplies of glucose and fats from meals, fasting flips a metabolic “switch,” liberating fat stores via fatty acid oxidation and ketone production while overall prioritizing the safeguarding of lean muscle mass and function. As such, fasting provides a mechanism that not only improves overall body composition but also triggers the activation of biochemical processes and signaling pathways that optimize human performance and physiological function, possibly slowing the processes of aging and disease.

There’s more research out there.

Do you take supplements? Potassium and Magnesium specifically? They are quite helpful in avoiding glucose flu and headache symptoms.

There are also several pieces of research that show that it is no more effective than any other types of diets with regard to long-term weight loss or metabolism.

It definitely works, it's worked for me and the data is clear I think, but the overall benefit is really no better than most other ways of trying to lose weight.

The American journal of clinical nutrition had an article that stated that research does not show any benefit to metabolism or glucose changes with fasting, but there are a couple other articles that suggest that there is.

There are indeed positive and functional changes with neurobiology that could blunt potential effects of Alzheimer's or other dementia so there is a neuroprotective component.

Now I am neither for nor against it. If it works, it works. But it is not a panacea and it is not a one size fits all.

IF works for some people but, for me, it wreaked my bloodwork (glucose went low, triglycerides and some others went high) and I was eating clean. I went back to eating 5-6 small meals a day and my bloodwork improved as did my energy levels. Find what works for you but make sure you make an informed decision when you pick.

I take a mushroom, fish oil and multi vitamin

I've heard Rogan mention some mushroom thing Onnit makes. What's the benefit?

There are so many supplements I would like to take based on my research but I can't afford to spend hundreds a month on vitamins...

I’m taking Genius brand, supposed to be good for the immune and brain system.

I also drink Karma, it’s a probiotic.

Have you seen any evidence that intermittent fasting can increase/optimize testosterone levels?

BTW, down 20 pounds since April, and have added muscle mass as well. Probably need to drop another 5-10 pounds.

I will supplement with a multivitamin, fish oil and cal/mag/zinc. But not all in the same day.

I haven't, but I would not be surprised. I can do a lit search in the medical databases had Duke and see what I can find.
