How do you sell a motorcycle to someone from SC? If I look at the NC DMV website, buyer and seller must be present at the plate office between 8-5 to transfer the title. That's gonna be difficult here! Is that just for an in-state transfer? He's from SC, how do you sell vehicles out-of-state online?

The buyer wants to come pick it up after work one day this week but I don't have the title signed and sealed, can't find a notary to do it without both sigs. I'm too busy working and apparently so is the buyer. HELP!

Have you tried your bank? I have bought and sold more vehicles than I can remember. I usually just go to my bank and tell them I have a buyer coming from out of town on Saturday to pick it up. They would notarize the sellers portion and then dmv would do the buyers part whenever they took it to get transferred.

Another option would be to try and find a mobile notary.

Is there a car dealer that you have bought from most of the time they have a notary available anytime they are open

I called my bank and the lady was telling me I need to go to the DMV to transfer the title first, then they could notarize a signature? It left me thoroughly confused.

My simple brain says
1) I the seller, sign the title and have it notarized.
2) the buyer signs it, then takes the title to his home state DMV and gets a title officially transferred to his name.

I guess that's an open title for a short period of time.. But how would the NC DMV transfer to the buyer in SC?

I tried to call the plate office but they won't answer questions like that. They will refer you to the website which says we need to transfer a title at the DMV plate office with both parties present.

Generally the notary just validates the signature, they don’t care what the signature is for and they sure aren’t going to enforce some dmv policy.

Wells Fargo has been happy to notarize buyer/seller signatures on my vehicle sales.

Including in-state transactions for which I subsequently took the signed notarized title to DMV and got plates with no problem.

NC DMV site is giving you advice on transferring a title to a NC resident. your buyer needs to look up rules at the SC DMV or whatever their equivalent little slice of hell is called.

Pretty sure I had no problem with this exact issue at BB&T.

EDIT: years and years ago...

The signature that needs notarized is the seller

That's all.

The end
True, but don’t give the title to the buyer without their signature on it. I made that mistake once on a somewhat collectable car. It ended up getting sold twice without ever being registered after I turned in my tags and guess who DMV thought still owned the car a year later.

Glad I got that cleared up without DMV getting involved other than to transfer the title to the guy who ultimately owned the car a year later.

If the title is in your name you guys sign in front of a notary they stamp and you send the buyer on their way. They turn it in and get a minty new title in SC. Chk net or phone book for home based notary service if you need after hours.

Is there a notary at the place you work?
Talk to them if so.

Are vehicle title transfers notarized in SC? When I transferred mine to VA I didn't have to get the NC titles notarized.

Not sure, but when I bought a vehicle in SC and brought it to NC the seller signature did not have to be notarized.

I was actually going to ask a similar question:
SC seller, NC (me) buyer
Seller said that he just needed to sign title over, but I wanted to look more into this
Thanks for this thread and info!
