Ok, what's the deal with gun cleaners?

Millie,

What type of bottles are your cleaners in now? I've carried a small 2 0z bottle of CLP with twist top around the world for the last 35 yrs. CLP also comes in a small pump bottle.

I take nothing to the range as far as cleaners/oil. I still use Frog Lube on my AR's, and unlike some, I've never had a problem, in rain, cold, heat, etc. Guess I'm one of the lucky one's, haha. I clean with whatever clp I have around, and use primarily shooter's choice grease in the syringe. But, I do shoot Glock's, so I don't clean/lube but about once a year.

I love that ewg. Ive had a jar of that for 3 years and it looks brand new. I clean my guns with clp then light coat of ewg on the rails or bcg and ive never had a problem.
Actually, out of all those jars, the only one I’ve bothered to open is the EWG. Works great for me on everything except .22 where it causes too much drag vs the weak loads. A little trick I’ve found that’s been very helpful is using a tiny flat paintbrush (think watercolors) to apply it. ;)

Millie dear you just got too much stuff. Leave all them cleaners at home.
What will suffice in your range bag..for cleaning/maintenance type stuff.. is very simple.
-1 general purpose rag to use on whatever.
-1 silicone cleaning cloth.
-1 small bottle of oil.
-Some q-tips help with dabbing oil into tight spots and more detailed quick-cleaning if needed.

The oil in case the gun gets a sticky spot, and the silicone cloth to wipe down the gun if it gets filthy or wet.

I do have one buddy who likes to carry every cleaning thing he can think of with him. He puts all that stuff in an ammo can. And that's something to consider. There's always one of these got-everything guys at the range, so if you need a cotton ball bent at a 90 degree angle he'll have one.

Don’t expect any help from me. All mine are straight. :p

I use CLP in a small bottle with a flip cap. I'll refill it occasionally. Try that as I've never had an issue with leaking.

Regarding the Hoppes (love the smell!!), make sure the fiber seal is in place. There should be a white disc attached to the under side of the lid that improves the seal to prevent leaking. If you have a metal lid directly contacting the glass/plastic, it will leak.

Use aerosol clp at home mostly. No leaks.

This stays in the car:

Small cheap tool box from Lowe’s, cheapo gun cleaning kit with tools to remove a squib, several bore snakes, rag, bottle of oil. Can’t leak anywhere but the tool box that way.

One is a screw-top jar and one is in a bottle with a little spout you pop up.

Well, I have many toolboxes around the house from my culinary school days! Lol. Great idea, thanks.

It's all plastic, I'm pretty sure.

I was actually using a flat art brush while cleaning the gun last night! It helped.

I like buckets. Big buckets. Small buckets. You can carry about anything in them. I usually show up at a match with a bucket full of stuff. Anyway, I carry CLP, other lubricants, bug spray, sunburn lotion, and target paint in a bucket that stays with my range stuff. These cans and jars stay upright as long as I do not turn over the bucket, and those little plastic straws will just fall to the bottom where they are easy to find. Millie, you might want to go to Lowes and get a small painter's bucket in which you can carry your range cans and bottles of liquids. It can stay in your car until you actually need it.

As far as home cleaning liquids go, get the bigger spray cans that fit into koozies and stick the small plastic straws down into the koozies to keep the straws from being lost.

Oil is going to leak; the most you can do is control it as much as possible.

I carry my stuff in an ammo can that fits upright in a cubbyhole in my car's trunk. Besides ammo, one end of the ammo can holds the extras show in the photo below.

The white box is a mini first aid kit. The red tube is a Winchester compact handgun cleaning kit (not for cleaning, but to poke things stuck in barrels). The oil bottle is held upright by the other stuff in the ammo can. The yellow cloth is untreated and the gray cloth is treated with silicone. That gear takes up minimal space, as shown in comparison to a box of 22LR ammo and an Uplula mag loader. I also carry two extra sets of eyes and ears, just in case they might be needed.

As info...

The Hoppe's Elite doesn't smell near as bad/strong as the regular Hoppe's.

I like to clean rifles while at the outdoor range.......due to the strong smell of butches bore shine. I buy the size that comes with a plastic "bobber" as an extra backup if it leaks, but i Havent had any issues.

Similar as to posted above, I have a plastic range box just for tools and cleaning suplies. If I have a leak in there......not a big deal.

I keep another cloth/fabric range bag for things such as eyes/ears/ other things you dont want cleaning products on.

Ive never had any issues with the spray CLP leaking.....and if it does, i swear its just motor oil.

There was some good ideas posted above.

I miss the old days when we'd fill a trough with varsol and submerge the whole gun in it (minus the wood) and then scrub with toothbrushes . Feel blessed I don't have cancer today ;). That was when I was a rifle instructor at Camp Seagull

Mille, and anyone else that’s kinda new at this, please be careful with dispensers with needles. When I use them I lay them sideways on the bench, not on their bottoms. Have to deal with them rolling a bit. The problem with having them with the bottom down is that the needle up. The point is too small for your eye to recognize, so when you bend down to look at a small piece you may jab yourself in the face or eye.

I’ve never done it, or even seen it, but lots of machinists swear by bent tip needle dispensers for this very reason.

I carry a pen-sized needle tip Oiler with med weight oil in my bag. It comes with a good cap. I maybe fill it once a year.

Good advice there. My bottle with the needle dispenser has red cap on it. When ever I use it cap stays in one hand while bottle is in the other and goes immediately back on after use.

I use Eno's Slideglide medium on my lugs and rails. I use quite a lot.
I use Mobil 1 on everything else. Fairly sparingly.
I wipe off the mess every 2-3000 rounds and reapply.

I carry a spray can of Remoil in my range bag for everyone else that doesn't lube their guns.

HAHA Stickman uses Frog lube...Don't you read the internet? That stuff will ruin your gun! It will literally eat the gun and make it useless, I know i read it on Facebook!

Millie you don't like the smell of Hoppes? Must be a female thing... Everyone here has had Hopps leak all over the place. I am pretty sure that they make it that way so you have to buy more. I like Hoppes for oil or RemOil. As i have said before i am an advocate now of greasing rails and metal on metal surfaces. (Lucas Oil Marine grease) After high round counts i can tell a difference over oil alone on the wear and tear. I also don't clean my guns as often as some folks.

Almost the same recipe here... All are carried in the range bag ( in a ziploc plastic bag )

US GI grease dabs on the slide and rails ( the grease that comes in the little vials with the yellow cap).
Mobile 1 Synthetic or Lucas Gun oil on everything else.
SprayCan of RemOil and Spray Can of Ballistol

Justice Brothers Brake cleaner for general cleaning, and Hoppes for detail cleaning..

The solution is easy......just don’t clean your guns. Problem solved.
Millie has been here enough now to know this is my Firearms Cleaning Plan. The last gun I cleaned was a SCCY after firing over 1,200 rounds through it. It failed, I cleaned it, it worked.

Hoppes #9 is good stuff. I love the smell of it. I keep a bottle of it big enuff that I can pour some on the concrete basement floor and then roll in it like a dog. :)
