Gun Shop Workers, What Red Flags Cause You To Deny A Sale?>LMAO

This reminds me of one of the first times I ever went in a Gander Mtn store.
Looking through the gun cabinets, stop when I hear some clicking to my right.

Some old lady with a hand cannon is pointing it at my head from 10 feet away and dry firing it as quickly as her pruney fingers can pull the trigger.

Not proud of it, but I cussed her and the kid behind the counter watching her do it.
Then I drove home and changed my underwear.

Didn't watch the vid, but many years ago I refused the sale of ammo to a guy that was drunk and angry. I honestly felt that he was buying the box of .357's to go shoot someone.

Several years back I was at the Greensboro gun show. I caught something in my peripheral vision and turned to my left to see right down the barrel of an AR. Some nitwit was looking through the scope and muzzling me with it. I grabbed the barrel and pushed it toward the ceiling and asked him which orifice he preferred it crammed into.

Well, it was something like that, but typing it here would be against the language rules.

This is kinda sorta the same issue. I have over a half dozen CWP testers here. I have asked them and many more..Has Any Body ever failed to get their Permit. As of this minute the answer is NO. Hmmmmm

I denied a guy a month ago. Obvious straw purchase. Guy and girl come in, he's asking about AR pistols and starts looking at one. He likes it and offers it to her to look at. She declined to hold it or look at it. He goes out to the car to get his PPP and hands it to her, says "she's buying it, its her permit." I said, no she's not, I'm not selling her anything. You showed interest and asked to see it, not her. It doesn't work like that.

Sometimes I get the impression that it’s a self fulfilling prophecy. Those willing to actually do the paperwork, attend a class, and pay the money are usually the type to treat it with at least enough respect to pass.

The guy who did the state portion of the security officer class I did this week was boasting how many folks he flunked in his CHP classes. He was an Uber Fudd though.

You go into a shop/work in a shop, you will be swept at one time or another. Sometimes it is not preventable. Going full retard about it serves no purpose.
Education is key. Just explain why it is not a good practice.

Now if some jack wagon pulls his gun and starts waving it around, he is escorted to the parking lot in any form/fashion available.

“No one needs more than 5 rounds in their carry piece. You kids and your bottom feeding plastic guns just wanna shoot folks like that Keanu Wick fella!”

Oh yeah. He rambled on about noone needing standard mags (or as he called them hi capacity magazine clips), how he thinks there should be legal limits to how many guns and how much ammo you can buy in a month (while boasting about his marksmanship because he practices 5 days a week and downing anyone who has a CHP and doesn't), he said assault magazines and assault rifles while talking about basic AR15s and how they need to be banned. Talked very disparagingly about open carry and so on and on and on. Had to bite my tongue half to death.

Awful part is he trains cops too.

Older guy in my class pointed a loaded, but jammed gun right at his chest trying to clear it. The RSO was directly behind him at the time because he was already making them nervous. RSO took control of the gun, cleared it, unloaded it, and escorted the man to the parking lot.

I do have a buddy that teaches. We were talking and he sees he's job as getting folks to understand and pass the material. He goes out of his way to get folks to understand and pass the class if he needs too.

A couple years back at a LGS at the coast I saw about the funniest “red flag” no go. The guy behind the counter was a LEO who was going for his DRE certification the following week and started messing with one of the regular Saturday customers giving him the various tests for practice and fun. A few minutes pass and two guys kinda “out of it” walk in and start watching the show with a blank look on their faces. After the first test one of them asked the other guy behind the counter what’s going on ... without missing a beat he answered he was testing a guy to see if he was on anything so he’d know if he could sell him a box of ammo. The two guys looked at each other, do not say one word but walk right out of the shop. The four of us look at each other in silence for a couple seconds and bust out laughing ... now it’s a running joke with the field sobriety test being given as an inside joke to regulars before they complete a purchase when business is slow.

I'm reminded of one day at Hyatt's, and older gentleman was filling out a 4473. At one point he looks up from the form and ask, This question about being convicted of a felony, does that mean in this state?

Was he German and shooting a Walther Creed?

Ive denied a few for address's not matching. Ive had a few sketchy folks, but none that didnt have their CHP in hand. Overall its been technicalities. Its a smaller gun store, in a smaller town, so maybe that helps. Did have a guy in sunglasses and a hoodie come in and we all thought we might have to shoot him. Then he fell flat on his ass as he walked in the front door. Super wierd cat. Didnt shoot him tho. :)

Man!!!! I am torn on this......I have Seen folks do the shooting portion 6 times before passing. I just...I..I dunno….torn.

Nice. We had a guy who looked like central casting for gang banger run into the store with an AK with a mag attached, he had no idea how close he came to getting shot by three different staff members and a couple of customers lol

Turns out he was on the way to the range and couldn't get the mag out and was in one heck of a hurry. People just do not think.

Not in a gun shop, but I had a guy PM me for a private sale. He said he had lost his wallet with his drivers license and CHP card, BUT he could show me an old North Carolina CHP card that had expired several years earlier and a current Arizona driver's license because he had a second home in Arizona. No, that didn't work for me.

“When the shooting starts, just aim in the same direction that we are!”

I agree good m, or at least passable marksmanship is important.

In fact, I initially put together my makeshift range specifically to practice at 3, 5 and 7 yards in preparation for the class. I was pretty convinced whatever else there might be in the class wouldn’t require much preparation.

You wants stories?

I’ll bet @18DAI has stories.

Well......... the vast majority of the stupid human tricks I get to see at my part-time job I am reluctant to share on a public forum. Largely due to my responses and language.

But the latest that I can tell here was a female who pulled in as the passenger in a Whoopty mobile. She was in the car as the driver wrote something on a piece of paper (we have REALLY good surveillance cameras ;) ) Then she hopped out of the car and rang the bell. I buzzed her in and asked what I could help her with. She says; "Y'all have......(reads note) Dracos? Just for spits and grins I ask her what caliber she wants one in. She furiously scanned the note and not finding that info says; "Whatever caliber the cheapest one is!"

I escorted her to the door and informed her about straw purchases and Federal Felonies. She got yelled at back in the car and then they drove off.

BTW, we no longer stock or order Dracos. Too many headaches. And they attract the wrong clientele. ;) Regards 18DAI

At Gander before they closed up, couple ahead if me ready to buy a Ruger LCP but the guy dud not have a purchase permit
and was from another county, clerk said sorry. He was retired LEO.

Some years ago I had a Colt .38 auto 1903 pocket model for sale on Gunboards. I have a C&R license. I was contacted by a chap who wanted it for the asking price and was eager to buy it. He was in Texas as I recall and at that time I lived in CA. He said he was going to send me his wife's C&R license for it. I wondered why he didn't have a C&R so I said no, but I would send it to an FFL of his choice, just have them send me their license or send me his own C&R license. He flew into an email rage, cussed me out just about every way possible. Guess who didn't get to buy a Colt 1903 pocket model?

I worked at a gunshop in a Pittsburgh suburb when I was in college before I went off to the Army. A gent rolls in one evening and said "I want to buy a gun and a bullet". The owner told me he would handle it so I stepped back. He asked the fellow why he wanted only one round. The gent said "That's all it will take". He was denied a sale by the owner.

When I was at Dick's, it was typically the erstwhile straw purchasers that I told to pound sand. Had a couple fail the NICS checks & a couple out of staters (Dick's management didn't wanna hear shit about long gun sales to residents of contiguous states).

Since you quoted the part about my buddy, he sees his job as teacher. Meaning it’s his job to get them competent to pass the test. Personally, I think that’s a great attitude to have. But I’m also a fan on Constitutional carry.

Ive got a one from working for Wal-Mart.

Had a kid that was about 19 years old at the time trying to buy a gun. Ran the background check and got a delay. We told the kid we couldnt sell him the gun at that time and we would call him when we got a response from NICS.

Kid calls the next day, still delayed. Next day same thing. This went on for about a week beforenthe kid comes into the store and asks me in person about the status of bg check. Still delayed.

Tells me he read on the internet that if three days passed without a response we were legally required to sell it to him. Took about 15 minutes to explain to him that it was after three days its up to the ffls discretion on whether or not to sell the firearm. Walmart is a green light only company.

Next day he comes in with his girlfriend and tells us shes gonna try to buy the gun since the delay is taking so long. Our good will was exhausted at that point so denied.

Horerczy: good story! Happens, just like you said. I’ve gotten call backs (from NICS) in as little as 15 minutes... years ago! To as long as a week. After the 3 business days, I go by my gut.
Had 5-6 kids (early 20) having a conference in front of my tables at an Asheville gun show years ago. Saw one guy pull money out, give it to another kid. Kid comes to table wants to buy a hi-point or some other “economy” grade weapon. Nope, sorry can’t do it, sorry. “Cause I’m Black, reply....no I just decided that I want to keep that weapon for my self.
Darn, dealer next to me comes over. Says, man aren’t you afraid they will file some sort of discrimination comply against. ...no not really, I really more concerned about ATF calling or coming to the shop with a trace request.
Rant off.
