Walmart to stop selling handgun ammunition, ask customers not to open carry

The announcement comes days after a mass shooting in Odessa, Texas and two other back-to-back shootings last month, one of them at a Walmart.

BY ANNE D'INNOCENZIOAP RETAIL WRITER

NEW YORK — Walmart says it will discontinue the sale of handgun ammunition and also publicly request that customers refrain from openly carrying firearms in stores even where state laws allow it.

The announcement comes just days after a mass shooting claimed seven lives in Odessa, Texas and follows two other back-to-back shootings last month, one of them at a Walmart store.

The Bentonville, Arkansas-based discounter said Tuesday it will stop selling short-barrel and handgun ammunition after it runs out of its current inventory. It will also discontinue handgun sales in Alaska, marking its complete exit from handguns and allowing it to focus on hunting rifles and related ammunition only.

“We have a long heritage as a company of serving responsible hunters and sportsmen and women, and we’re going to continue doing so,” according to a memo by Walmart’s CEO Doug McMillon that will be circulated to employees Tuesday afternoon.

Walmart is further requesting that customers refrain from openly carrying firearms at its stores unless they are law enforcement officers. Last month, a gunman entered a Walmart store in El Paso, Texas and killed 22 people using an AK-style firearm that Walmart already bans the sale of. Texas became an open carry state in 2016, allowing people to openly carry firearms in public.

Walmart’s moves will reduce its market share of ammunition from around 20% to a range of about 6% to 9%, according to Tuesday’s memo. About half of its more than 4,000 U.S. stores sell firearms.

I don't know anyone who buys ammo there anyway? Except for shotgun shells-

Basically they decided the PR was worth the small profit they make off it. They don't have hearts (if that's what liberal trash thinks). Just my two cents-

Hmmm....Im gonna go to a Walmart open carrying. If someone says something, Im gonna untuck my shirt and hide my gun with it while they watch.
Then Im going to ask what the difference between the two is and why one is acceptable and not the other.

I'll get a blank look, likely some drivel about how it's corporates decision and nothing will change.

Guess I'll raid my piggy bank for some ammo monies...

There is a pithy comments about going full retard that should be inserted here.

I can tell you right now, the one in mine town gonna have some problems if they try to prevent openly carrying. The city police chief encourages it pretty vocally.

This part was down on the bottom of the article.

The retailer has long found itself in an awkward spot with its customers and gun enthusiasts. Many of its stores are located in rural areas where hunters are depend on Walmart to get their equipment. Walmart is trying to walk a fine line by trying to embrace its hunting heritage while being a more responsible retailer.

With its new policy on "open carry," McMillon noted in his memo that individuals have tried to make a statement by carrying weapons into its stores just to frighten workers and customers. But there are well-intentioned customers acting lawfully who have also inadvertently caused a store to be evacuated and local law enforcement to be called to respond.

He says Walmart will continue to treat "law-abiding customers with respect" and it will have a "non-confrontational approach."

They should probably just strip assault rifles and ammo out of the liberal / ghetto stores then shouldn't they?

Now it is all about hunting. I guess we can't hunt with a handgun. Their stores and their decision.
Always waste of time waiting for the one person who has the keys to the ammo display.

Changes nothing. I don't go there often, but from now on, I will OC every time I walk in their doors.

I want to see them differentiate the ammo between barrel lengths. Maybe they'll hire a ballistician to recommend only ammo tested in 24" barrels sold :D

Or more than likely, it's virtue signalling BS. Can't barely find time to shop there anymore unless I'm clearance hunting to resell or re-gift bargains. We don't buy food there anymore.

Wait, so they’re going to stop selling all ammo?
.22lr? It feeds my 10/22
357 or 44mag? Feeds lever guns
9mm, 40S&W? Feeds PPC
243, 7-08, 308, 444 Marlin? Feeds Lone Eagle, TC, etc.
They never sold 416 Barrett or 50BMG.

Maybe they’re not bright enough to sell ammo. It’s a shame for folk in rural areas without many options.

Good. I'm actually glad this commie company has done this. Back in the early 90's, Wal-mart was all about made in the USA and supporting local jobs. Used to see banners hanging from the ceilings about it in the Indiana stores. Now, the largest (amazon might be bigger) importer of cheap Chinese shit. I used to go there before the range and buy $100 in ammo or so. Now I will buy all ammo at either gun shows, Outdoor limited or elsewhere on line. They get nothing from me anymore.

it is a shame for more rural areas but unless our community bombards with emails and threatens to stop buying ANYTHING from there - i expect it to continue and get worse from them and other companies.

i dont have a problem spending my money somewhere else.

Good,

So lets see, they can fill their new found retail space with the following products, which should be real popular.

I think they should also consider endorsing Harris and use her likeness in their stores as a Poster Child.

Maybe they'll put all the handgun ammo on clearance! I hope i get some cheap.

At this point, I wouldn't buy a $5 dollar bill from them for a quarter. I'm getting tired of being called a racist and being told I'm the problem. Fall of 2020 is going to be interesting.

It sucks because in a pinch I could run out and pick up a few boxes of ammo for a range visit. I have been buying most of my ammo from Outdoor Limited anyway

No ammo, self check out, handicapped employees, and check my receipt. You are not going to stop me at Walmart or Sam’s to highlite my receipt. I helped my self, checked my self out without help, bagged my own shit, and I ain’t getting in line again for a yellow mark on my receipt. No thank you. Try it. Walk on out and when they say “sir, sir” say no thank you.

And if just the not open carrying or selling ammo is not enough to convince you, here's a piece of another story:

McMillon said that after talking to people “inside and outside of [Walmart]” the company has also decided to send “letters to the White House” to ask for “common sense measures” on firearms. He said, “Congress and the administration should act.”

It has been a very long time since I bought ammo at a Walmart. In fact I very seldom go in there any more as is. That place is like a clown to me "Scares the hell out of me"!!! I hate clowns!

Hmm .22lr rifles everywhere. 9mm, 40 and 45acp carbines galore nowadays. 38/357 along with 44 and 45lc lever action rifles aplenty. So just what handgun ammunition will they stop selling? 380 and 32. Oh boy.....

What is short barrel rifle ammunition? And how is it different than .223 predator hunting ammunition? Will they still stock VMAX or something but not stock FMJ's? .223 is a well established varmint hunting caliber.

There's a lot of stupid here.

For a while, WM had a "Made in America" thing going. They had the cheap Chinese garden hose and a more expensive hose labeled "Made in America". Customers gravitated towards the Chinese stuff to the point that they had to drop the campaign. They sell cheap Chinese stuff because Americans prefer the cheap Chinese stuff.

And, I'm guilty of that as well in my youte. But since I've gotten older, I will pay more, if need be, for something made here by my neighbor.

What didn't get a lot of press is that a couple of weeks ago, the CEO called for "reopening the debate" regarding assault weapons ban. In my book, this is much worse than not selling certain things. They are trying to make it impossible for you to own them. This CEO has gone full-blown Dicks (pardon the pun).

I would often shop from WalMart.com or locally before I went to Amazon because I didn't think one company should dominate retail like Amazon. And I love Wal-Mart's online grocery service: the good WM prices without the crappy WM experience. But if they are going to lobby Congress to take away my rights, I might be buying groceries elsewhere.

I rarely go to Walmart, but the only reason I used to was to buy ammo. No reason to go at all now.

We don't keep much junk food in the house, but when bad storms are coming we always stock up and we get it at Walmart. I think even that will be ending.
