Hey guys

Had a relative from Europe ask me if I could find him a shotgun
he said he was looking for a Remington 12ga, with a number 3 choke,
or said the shotgun would have 3 stars for the choke amount or something like that.

Anyone know what the hell hes talking about ?

I've not messed with shotguns so I'm not sure what his best route would be

Modified. Those are European markings.

Full +

Improve Mod ++

Modified +++

Improve Cylinder ++++

Cylinder +++++

Negative ghost rider, there's a difference between the "stars" and the "plus marks".
3 "stars" is cylinder choke.....

Well, I would hate for them to stream line the process and make it make senses. Gotta love when important information is propriety.

If my understand is correct (and once every blue moon it is) the "star" system of choke marking originated overseas long before the "plus and minus system came to be here in the US. The first Browning Citori's to come to America were all marked with the star system which at some point went to the + & - system.
There was a brief period in my collection career when I was seeking foreign made, high quality shotguns so I was forced to learn the star system since that's how everything I was looking at was marked.

For anyone that would like to record it the markings are as follows.
* = full
*- = imp mod
** = mod
**- = imp cyl
**s = skeet
*** = cylinder

Almost all shotguns are made with choke tubes today so would be mote looking for a fixed barrel Remington unless older model.

I wonder if he as asking about a 3 quarter choke? In Europe they utilize a "quarter value" system. 0/4 cylinder, 1/4- Improved Cylinder, 1/2- Modified, 3/4- Improve Modified, and 4- Full.

Look guys, 10mm is 3/8's, 13mm is 1/2", 14mm is 9/16's, 19mm is 3/4's and so on....can't we just all get along here? :D He's a big green fan so the European relative is good to go in my book!

He said he was looking for a Remington 12ga with 3 star choke he said they varied from 1 to 5 stars, and that 3 stars was right in the middle.

What I question is even if he comes over to visit, how the heck does he buy one, and then even get it back.
not sure if I'm even able to buy one and send it to him as a gift.

I have a shotgun from Turkey. Lots of Turkish? in the owner's manual. There is a chart that uses stars to indicate choke and three stars is MOD.

As Combat Driver said, isn't it all a moot point? Buy a new Remington with Rem chokes. The sporting is <$1000 and comes with Skeet, Improved Cylinder, Light Modified and Modified. Everything you need unless you shoot trap. If he does trap then buy the trap model.

However if he definitely wants a fixed choke gun the most common used ones are 26" skeet (.005) and 28 inch Mod (.020) so what barrel length he wants is important. Also does he want a camo gun for hunting, a pump gun, a trap gun....what?

Gun fit is important too. For some people the only Remington that fits is the Trap model with a high parallel comb. I have a 20 gauge sporting and I put a Beretta 1/8" gel pad on it. I use it for skeet students that don't own a gun yet.

Wait, I found the perfect fixed choke gun for him (MOD and IMOD) and he can get it in the EU from Krieghoff.
Hey Simple Man, sir can you convert $12,000 into Euro dollars?

I have a feeling she doesn't care how many Euros it costs. Just saying. Her nails cost more than some dudes gun!
