The political discourse — or lack of it — has apparently become so caustic in the United States that 67% of those surveyed in a poll released Wednesday believe another civil war is imminent.

The poll was conducted by Georgetown University’s Institute of Politics and Public Service as part of their annual Battleground Poll civility survey, and according to the institute’s executive director, the results could indicate that the 2020 election could be as divisive and explosive as the 1860 election that precipitated the Civil War of 1861-65.

The impeachment thing could set it off before that. o_O

The only people who want civil war are the people too dumb to take a look at history (our own civil war, the Balkans) and realize what an absolute mess one would be.

It won’t, impeachment won’t remove him from office, so it’s mostly irrelevant. That said, I do expect that some nut will attempt an assassination when he is impeached but not removed.

With no physical boundary it seems unlikely to me that we’ll have a civil war, more likely a rise of domestic attacks. Terrorism is essentially an effort of the disenfranchised to make themselves relevant, and it seems generally unwise to disenfranchise all of the people with guns even if they have previously proven to be peaceful in difficult times.

Not sure what the odds are that lightning strikes twice and things work out again are either. Or maybe it would be a third time? Let's say it's a complete collapse, everything goes down, what are the odds of another Washington being able to turn down the chance at a monarchy?

This is the normal path that get's taken. Not that I agree with much else he stood for, but he hit this one out of the park.

"If you took the most ardent revolutionary, vested him in absolute power, within a year he would be worse than the Tsar himself".[42]

Look at how fundamentally this country has derailed from what it was supposed to be and even what it was 50-100 years ago. Consider the sheer mass of
that Mordor on the Potomac has become that is entwined in the lives of everyone in ways it was never meant to be. Look at how we now have a large swath of the population wanting it even bigger, pleading for a communist take over to control their lives. Look at the mass surveillance that is being illegally perpetrated, the militarization of police, “war on ... this or that” drugs and all the other excuses being used to exert forcible control.

Voting harder isn’t going to work, nor will the “right” people take over by running for office. Trump is probably the closest thing we’ve had to that and look at the swamp mass he’s uncovered - a mass you can’t vote out.

This is just at the federal level and I guarantee you it’s just as bad at the state and local level, for example the recent threads on Chatham county and Pittsboro which diagrams the division between leftists and deplorables.

If the choice is between a continuing of the above with a continued slide towards communism and fighting, fighting with all it entails becomes more attractive. The communists won’t stop. It’s like that scene in Star Wars where Lando said to Darth Vader that they had a deal and Vader says, I changed it and pray I don’t do so further.

No it won’t be civil war as in nation state against nation state. It will be people in local communities killing other people in their communities. When the dust settles, the face of the former nation will be much different.

They should re-take the poll after yesterdays events in DC. I would think the % would be trending higher. The article says 1000 likely voters were polled about 2 weeks ago. I did not look further than the surface of the article as to the methodology of the poll. A lot of college polls are done by students on students. Not saying that is what happened here, I'm just saying.

10-12 years ago, the idea of revolution and conflict breaking out was something whispered in the dark reaches of pirate radio on the Internet. Today people are freely saying they expect it. We are also aligned at a point In the cycles where things reach crisis proportions, if history is to be our guide.

Brace yourself, winter is coming.

And, yet, civil wars are commonplace in history. Human beings seem to love mess.

The boundaries will be between rural and urban areas. IMHO

Between Dystopiana's and Free America...

I agree that this is most likely. So think about yourself in a battle with the much larger, better equipped and better trained forces of the cities and the central government. In a direct conflict the result will be the same as in the last US civil war, the cities will lose lots more people and spend lots more money, but will still triumph, so what to do? This is where I think terrorism come in, and not even killing people directly, but the equivalent of mechanical sit down strikes and property damage. How long do the cities fight if 500 people were to steal cars in the city, drive them onto a major highway in the morning, and set them on fire randomly and just walk away...every day. Or a small number of people destroy bridges. Or a small number of people hijack trucks, perhaps with the blessing of the drivers. How about destroying rail lines or road leaving shipping ports?

I’m not suggesting that this would effect change in the way that many people want, because we’re never going back to where we were 50 or 100 years ago, but it seems like a far more likely scenario than a shooting war.

I still don't understand the logic behind people wanting a civil war, when they have to fight the rednecks, cops and military.

Right? Aren't those the groups they hate? Just sayin-

Or one guy and our incredibly vulnerable infrastructure. Remember those folks shooting transformers in a power grid?

https://www.latimes.com/nation/la-na-grid-attack-20140211-story.html

And if you were feeling really spicy have a second sniper or some toepoppers waiting for the repair crew. After a few trucks lose engine blocks and a few power workers lose a leg, noone is going to want to fix a thing.

I don't follow the news or the mainstream media much, because its all gloom and doom. Just a non stop stream of bad news and angry people calling for blood.

We do have a lot of protesters, Antifa, extremists out there, but in my day to day dealings with people, it seems like the average American is doing pretty well.

Washington DC is a cluster, but its been one for ages and I don't see that changing anytime soon. I don't think we're going to vote in a better govt for ourselves, but I don't think the average American has reached a point where they're looking to fight about it.

The average American? No. The average American is at the mall and eating fast food, bitching about whoever is in office but otherwise content to live life in the middle. We (i.e., people on this forum and those like it) are biased by groupthink; so are the nutty left who see themselves championing Antifa-like crusades and heralding in communism. We think that people will be fed up to join a side and get after it. Maybe some day, but not any day soon.

Absolute rubbish.

They aren't at the mall. They shop online now, the mall is a ghost town.

While things are certainly bad, The Daily Caller is doing some inappropriate spin here. From the actual article they linked to:

These observations contribute to the Civility Poll’s additional finding that the average voter believes the U.S. is two-thirds of the way to the edge of a civil war. On a 0-100 scale with 100 being “edge of a civil war,” the mean response is 67.23.

Thing is, I don't think they will press a conflict into the rural areas. The cities themselves don't have a better equipped better trained force sufficient to engage in that, unless you are presuming they will have the military at their beck and call. Which I somewhat question. During my association with OathKeepers, I learned that some on the ground base leaders said they would absolutely not turn on Americans and they have the keys. And then you have the individual soldiers they may desert and change sides. Plus an asymetrical war would make it unsustainable. Think Afghanistan.
I think Dystopiana will circle it's wagons and limit their reach to what they CAN control. Then it will be a tentative relationship between Dytopiana and the Badlands. Think Balkanization on a city level. Checkpoints to be screened at when you enter a large city. My view of the future. Assuming a massive meteor doesn't hit us first. Yes, I think about that too. ;)

I still don't understand the logic behind people wanting a civil war, when they have to fight the rednecks, cops and military.

That's just it. They don't expect to fight themselves. They think someone else will do it for them. But, note which side you think the military will be on. They don't think that. And heaven forbid they go to the outside for help. That will swing more over to our side. Blue helmets make easy targets. ;)

While I don’t want anything close to a civil war, I can see the feelings of everyday Americans boiling over and it could get dicey. People are tired of seeing their hard earned money being thrown away, given away is more like it. They are tired of seeing our politicians stay in office for a lifetime making laws that do nothing but work against them, tired of seeing illegal aliens come into this country in waves, taking everything and giving nothing back while still swearing allegiance to their home country. Socialist candidates running for office, entitled kids demanding paid college, taxes going up, violence in the streets from political thugs. At what point do we take our country back?

"Two-thirds to the way to the edge"? What the freak does that even mean??
It means if you measure from here to the edge, and split it into three equal sections, we’ve gone through two of those. :p

Take it back from who? At what point did "we" have the country? When did we "lose" it? If we could roll back the clock, what year would satisfy you?

I'm not saying these things aren't real concerns, but I don't think things are half as bad as political pundits and the nightly news want you to believe.
The government has always thrown money into the wind.
The government has always been in the business of screwing over it's constituents.
I think illegal immigration is a concern, but is it worth a deadly drawn out civil war in which actual Americans die? Imagine the vacuum left for foreign actors to exploit. You want to weaken our country? A civil war is a great way to do that. It's entirely in our enemies interests to have us fighting among ourselves.
How about a couple loonies on the left running for president? Is that worth the destruction of our union? A couple antifa morons political larping in a couple big cities? Is that worth the deaths of a massive amount of our citizens?

Let's be real here. A lot of the guys on this forum are not spring chickens. How many of you really think you have a chance of even surviving a civil conflict? You'll be the first to go, when the mob comes for whatever Mountain House buckets you've managed to hoard in your basement, and while your firearms might save you for a while, a large, determined group of people will eventually take what you have when your insulin runs out. There's not going to be any glorious struggle for freedom, just death, and lots of it. The elderly, the sick, the disabled, the poor.

I don't want civil war, I don't think we're anywhere near civil war, and I hope it stays that way.

This is a stupid poll, and as others have said, you can really make a poll say anything you want by administering it to the people you want to talk. It's just the news media continuing to sensationalize in order to get you to click through to their website and make them money.

If it happens: Nobody is going to have much fun. The ultra preppers that sit on 25,000 MREs and 1 million rounds of ammo will eventually find out the hard way how it sucks to need a root canal with no dentists or an appendectomy with the hospital burning. It's just not something you want to experience.

Remember when the polls said that H would win?

You misunderstood me. As I said, I don’t want a Civil War. I have children and grandchildren and while I’m not yet old, I’m not young anymore either. Ive seen wars and what they do to a country. Ive seen how wars start, and I can see this country heading for one eventually. We are as divided today as we’ve ever been in our history. It wouldn’t take a whole lot of anything to set this country on fire. The political climate is terrible, the racial climate is terrible, outside influences is at an all time high. We’ve been invaded from the South, and it is an invasion! The left keeps pushing abortion, LGBGT crap being taught in our schools, taxpayer sex changes for anyone that happens to want one. They keep trying to change our history. Our infrastructure is on a razor’s edge, everyone is offended and gets butthurt at nothing and hate is rampant in our country. There is no middle ground anymore. Our religion is attacked every day, and by people that want to run this country! We’ve been taken over from within. As I’ve said, I’ve seen war, my son has seen war, I don’t want my grandchildren to see it, but I don’t stick my head in the ground and pretend these things aren’t happening either.

That was a long answer to a guy you want to be your friend, especially if you are wrong. I hope you are right, but I know Chuck and know only a sliver of the things he’s seen in over thirty years of deployments.

This is a stupid poll, and as others have said,
Likely the Poll was taken because ( unfortunately ) Civil War is currently a hot topic coast to coast.
Point being it was not taken because of our concerns ( OR Lack Of Them ) here in the Carolinas.

I don't want civil war,
Normal people don't want a CW and I would think even the Left doesn't want a conflict.
The Left wants to convert / change / transform us ( America ) as easily as possible.

Take it back from who?
Really,?
Seriously
The Left, Dems & other members of the "Uniparty" have been in the process of trying to / forcing transformation of America for decades and as of recently have been ratcheting up their agenda.
Their current Sub-Agenda is to remove Trump at any(?) cost.
They would also like to remove Pence at or almost the same time.
The Left's actions speak for themselves, period.

I personally have become of the belief that Schiff is actually a CIA Operative that is masquerading as a Congress Critter or certainly is being fully protected by "The Dark Side" period.
I haven't seen Pelosi come to his defense much and when they are together she seems unsure about what she is allowing to or being Ordered to allow happen.

I'm not saying these things aren't real concerns, but I don't think things are half as bad as political pundits and the nightly news want you to believe.
Really?
This coming from a proponent of the "Just Sell Guns Posse", which is the same Posse that claims to be Constitutionalist or as close to it that nothing else matters.

I think illegal immigration is a concern,
Damn right it is, especially when we have all(?) the Dem 2020 candidates advocating for "Open Borders" and everything FREE for them if they can cross the river.
Also, several of the 2020 Dems have ties to La Raza as well.
BTW, how's that working for California or ( fair question ) does it mater to you because you don't directly feel the effects of it in your neighborhood ,, yet?

How about a couple loonies on the left running for president? Is that worth the destruction of our union?
A couple of Loons? What about the ones already in power?

Case in point,

How Venezuela’s political crisis began and what’s next

Maracaibo, the story of Venezuela's collapse

Personally I do not want a civil conflict and I do not know anyone that does, period. I also believe that the "Power brokers" are pushing as hard as they can to gauge where a breaking point is because they don't want a conflict either.
The Left's dilemma they are behind on their time line and need to try to catch up as fast as possible.

Which is why they need to or want to Remove Trump ASAP.
Trump has undone many of their rules and regulations and other things they had put into place through the years.

Frankly, I am glad you are here Charles, really.

That was a long answer to a guy you want to be your friend, especially if you are wrong. I hope you are right, but I know Chuck and know only a sliver of the things he’s seen in over thirty years of deployments.

My dad deployed to Bosnia, and Haiti, among other places. His MOS had him seeing things the average enlisted man probably didn't. We were told some stories, but I can't imagine what he didn't tell us, or couldn't. When he got out, he continued to work as a contractor for the army. His experiences are part of the reason I want peace and the union upheld.

I don't care who says it, this "us and them" talk is not going to fix anything. There is no "our religion", there is no color or racial make up that makes one a "real" American. We are a not a homogeneous nation, and we have never been. Our identity isn't in personal identifiers, but in our desire for justice, domestic tranquility, general welfare and the blessings of liberty.

As a nation we're dealing with cultural, economic, and political problems that don't have easy solutions but things aren't as bad now as they have been numerous times in the past. And whatever idyllic past people are hoping to return to now never existed. We've always had a rough go of it, you just didn't see it because you didn't have 24 hour cycles of sensationalized news shoved down your throat.

It's not going to be homosexuals, abortions, LGBTQWTFBBQ, or Antifa that destroy this nation. If anything causes a civil war it's going to be the continued narrative from both sides that the other is evil. That's what fuels polls like this. Not any realistic consideration of the state of our nation.

Well, the right mostly wants to be left alone. The left mostly wants everyone to not just tolerate, but praise their insanity and obey their edicts. So yeah, the right is now pissed off enough to call out and resist the evil inherent in the worldview and practice of the left. But it's self defense, not provocation.

Yes, people seem to still get along, mostly. Not always, not everywhere, but mostly the conflict isn't on the surface. But I can tell you my attitude has changed significantly in the last 10 years. And if 2/3 of the country thinks we are close to breaking, most of that 2/3 is still acting nice and civil, even though underneath they believe things will reach a breaking point.
