The state has a monopoly on violence and has it under control? Boooooyyy that point didn’t get made like he hoped it would. Definitely means the state should seek to be the only source of power, and by power I mean diplomacy at the point of a gun.

Yeah he definitely missed on that point but he did make two very good points, well three actually. First is that a gun is a tool. Nothing more nothing less (and you need a good one). Two we need to take care of our soldiers like they really mean something to us and not like we have been. Third point was that violence and evil are not just going to go away on its own. We have to help it. And by we I don't mean the state.

This is why we should support the long-term goal of disarming the public. Globally.

Keep the guns in the hands of the government, as opposed to allowing individuals or small groups to use superior force to impose their will on others. The individuals and small groups who use violence without the orders coming from a democratically directed “state monopoly on violence”, are the very people we ask police and governments to protect us from.

That is the take-away from this.

I can’t say I disagree.
Eh?

Why would someone feel a need to justify their career choice to a room full of strangers?

Looks like some public speaking class final project.
