Dec 7, CheyTacUSA 2-Gun hosted by Todd Resource Mgmt

I'm planning on running the 6.5CM Tikka and XD(m)

I don't have any delusions about being competitive, I just want to check it out.

When @Matt.Cross and I did a similar match earlier this year, I had a blast, even though we didn't really know what we were doing.

We need to do it again, we were quite the team!

How far was that one "just for kicks" pistol target at the plantation? It was something like 150 yards but I can't remember the distance...

Right at 125 if I recall.

@11B CIB tell me about stage briefs at the last match. Was there time allotted for finding and ranging targets? Were targets clearly visible or did you have to hunt for them? Or were the stages "blind" where you had to do all of that on the clock?

At the match @Matt.Cross and I did, FINDING the targets was the biggest challenge. Unpainted steel hidden in shadows very far away...

I think there are stages there that have targets you have to find yourself and range yourself. From what my friend said, the time limits are very tough on all stages

The December match is an individual match but starting in 2020, the match series for points standing has a mix of individual and team comps and varying locations around the state. I’m going to try to shoot all 8.

There was one stage that was totally blind; the ROs briefed you on what was required and there was a “holding area” where we lingered waiting for our turns

Beyond that, you could generally see the range, could use Binos etc during the stage brief any planning was done here. Once it was your turn, basically you got your gear in order, finalize any questions etc with the RO and off you go.

The stage briefs would tell what targets were at what distance and what order you would shoot them in, and if you had to alternate...like the stage I only fired one rifle round on, I hit the first plate at 350yds but my team mate never hit it so I/we couldn’t progress to the 415. On several stages there was a known “sniper” target, which was a raw steel/unpainted shoulder and head silhouette at an undivulged distance and you were responsible for locating, ranging and shooting it.

That’s what stage 5 was (the stage I started on in the rotation), and it was the blind stage. You knew there was a sniper target at some distance and you had to shoot it 5 times total under a low picnic table (most bipods too high when normally deployed) so shooting off a low bag or with an Atlas bipod with the legs kicked forward at the 45* angle for example was required or you’d be staring at the table through your scope). I just guessed the target was going to be around 300yds so I dialed my dope for that and figured I could work up or down from 300 pretty easily. Time started, I ran to the table, threw my bag down and my rifle on top of it, and got on the glass. When I saw the “sniper” after 3-4 seconds (I looked to the furthest and darkest place first) I realized it was a tad closer so I just dropped a couple clicks down and and went to town on it.

The time constraints were tight for new shooters or if you had some sort of problem whether a stoppage or trouble getting into position, it was going to make you rushed on the trigger to work through the stage.

I got 50 rounds loaded and another 50 pieces of brass primed for the Valkyrie last night...I’ll be spending a couple long days on the flat range getting my numbers squared away

And I’ll redope my 5.56 2.5-10x for 75gr Hornady just so they have some extra oomph on the steel. There was once where I saw my 69gr impact but it didn’t budge the 22” plate so I didn’t get a hit call right away so I had to re-engage it.

If you don’t reload and want some good 5.56 ammo, look for either IMI with the 77gr SMK or Black Hills 77gr SMK, both are VERY fast rounds in a .223/5.56 for 77gr and I’m sure they’d rock a target.

@Tim

I'm not joining the match, but I'm swinging by to conduct some bidness with @jmccracken1214 and hopefully get to shoot the breeze with @11B CIB for a minute or two.

You still planning the trip?

Yes sir, I'll be there.

I'll be the guy wearing cargo pants and carrying a rifle.

You’ll blend right in ;)

except with me. I don’t have a beard :(

You got that thing for me?

I’ll be sporting cargo pants...carhartt jacket and multicam hat most likely. No beard

See y’all in the AM!

Yes sir. I do.

did you see the pistol stage they just released a video on? Saying to bring lots of ammo.... looks like a frustrating waste of ammo to me.

I’ll give it a few tries and then skip it

Those are time wasters for people without match sights and a way to eek out a winner for guys who are equally matched with a rifle

it’s the only stage I’ll be confident in!

I hope you guys did well, had fun, and return home safely!

2 out of 3 ain’t bad!

i shot poorly, but had a great time.
Nice meeting you as well!

Pro tip: make sure your elevation knob is dialed to zero and not a full revolution high.

Once I got that worked out, my numbers got better

Still feel stupid though

You're prone to a brain fart, now and again.

Ask me how I know. :D

This match had a higher degree of difficulty than the last one.

Offhand shooting at 350-410yds on the clock

A lot more pistol shooting from 20-120yds.

A stage where a single miss ended your run and made you lose all the points earned on the stage (if you chose to stop after a hit, you could walk away with all points earned)...know your limit.

A pistol spinner than spun towards and away from you that you had to spin an entire revolution. This was difficult and very few people (less than 10 out of 105) spun it

there was 105 people out there?!?!

there was 105 people out there?!?!

Late last night when they were talking about that stage and someone cleared it in literally 30 seconds, I believe it was Richard Todd himself who threw that figure out. I don’t think there were 105 competitors (more like 50). I guess that’s with range visitors and stuff shooting it also
