I just bought an NC Quick Pass

I just wish the money went to education...
More than HALF of the state's budget is already for education, including public schools, charters, the UNC system and community colleges. NC teacher salaries are the second highest in the Southeast, and that doesn't include a pension that exceeds anything you will ever see in the private sector. We need roads. We need hospitals, mental health, law enforcement, environmental protections, fisheries, game wardens and a host of other things that are every bit as important.

In two weeks I will visit my in-laws for Thanksgiving, where all the women teach, and I will hear two days of sanctimony about how theirs is the most important profession in the history of mankind, teachers are sacrificing for the cause, buying classroom supplies instead of eating, and the 30% pay raise they've had since 2011 isn't enough.

I rarely go to Charlotte but have used the toll roads as a leap frog type bypass. It works well enough in non rush hour time periods that it was very much worth the cost.

I'd rather sit in the traffic before I give them one dime. But I do get a kick out of people on occasion in the express lane traveling along at the same speed as me. I just shake my head and say to my wife "I just guess they just have money to burn"

Yeah, I haven't driven the Monroe Bypass yet but I suspect that's what it'll be like. I've been driving through Monroe off and on for decades and it's never a fun drive regardless of the day or time.

Tangentially, soon we'll have the Shelby Bypass and Shelby is another town no one should ever have to drive through. It's a bit surprising that NC didn't make that a toll road, but maybe they figured "they already have to live in Shelby, why crap on them even more?"

I've never been to shelby. My father inlaw worked on the monroe bypass for the last two years or so doing utility bores cutting through a bunch of rock and crap.

Shelbys bypass has yet again halted construction till 2024 I believe. That bypass has been promised since the late 90s when it first secured funding.

So in SC, the property tax on your car is higher but gas tax is lower.
Yep...gas tax second lowest in the U.S. So we actually pay more for Gas than ya'll do. It's the tax that makes the difference. Property tax is OUT OF CONTROL!! My 2020 Jeep is $500!!!!! RS new Expedition $700!!!!. How do N.C. property taxes compare??? Often wondered???

I just used the estimator and it came out to $547.50 on my car. I'm not really sure how that works out since I paid $429.54 when I bought it new. I hope when I get the real bill it's less since I doubt my car is gaining value from when I bought it.

We have a sticker on one car for 540 because of all the orthodontist visits.

I canā€™t believe 540 is breaking even on the operating costs based on the traffic I see.

I'll tell you how it works. In June 2005 I bought a new motorcycle. 3 months later, September 2005, I get a property tax bill from Charlotte Mecklenburg and the tax value is $2000 more than MSRP was 3 months prior. That's how it works it Mecklenburg County.

.

Looked at a house down in FV. One factor that pushed us away from that was $200 per month in tolls to use the highway to get to work.
I have the same drive time i would have had from there. But no tolls.

Kinda funny my education comment went over like a lead balloon. I am not a public school teacher, for the record, so once more ill just say "do anything with the money except send it to Spain."

As far as vehicles go, hereā€™s what was on our 2019 bills:

County (Mecklenburg) Tax = .8232 per $100 value
City (Charlotte) Tax = .4887 per $100 value
Charlotte vehicle fee = $30

So my ā€˜03 Ram was $78.41, showing an appraised value (not sure where that comes from) of $3,690.

Theyā€™ve now added the vehicle property tax to the license registration bill.

If youā€™re curious about (home) property, our tax bill shows (this is a copy/paste from another thread, due to a re-evaluation that went on this year):

2018
Meck: 0.8232
Meck Waste: $27.50
Char: 0.4887
Char Waste: $46.06

2019
Meck: 0.6169
Meck Waste: $33.50
Char: 0.3481
Char Waste: $58.06

So while my value increased 69% (from 8 years ago), my taxes increased by ~24%. Expected worse.

SHIITE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:eek::(:mad:

You know what makes the tolls extra special? The kingsmen that sit on the side and swarm on those enjoying the open lane they paid for not only in taxes, but also for privilege. They just have to f*ck you that third time for a little more money.
I agree, that's the worst part. I used to see them every morning when I took I-540 every day. Of course, the few times I saw actually dangerous driving the SHP were nowhere to be found.

So having had the Quick Pass for a few months now, let me say this: wow is it awesome.

I want to be opposed to it philisophically. I want to hate it. But when I'm driving home from a round of sporting clays at Hunting Creek Preserves and $3-4 means skipping a half-hour (or more) of traffic ... I pay every time.

NC has some of the highest fuel taxes in the US, yet the POSā€™s the Marxists put in charge now must fleece The People for more.
It makes my Agent Orange act up.
I'd gladly pay the taxes you guys pay to have decent roads. The roads in SC are horrible. Voters actually voted against a gas tax I think was .02 per gallon to fix the roads. Most people don't use 10 gallons a week and won't pay .20 a week for better roads. I use from 50-75 gallons a week and would gladly pay a slightly higher tax instead of having paved roads that are worse than most dirt roads

You guys ain't seen crap when it comes to taxes.

From what I can tell Texas must be in the top tier when it comes to soaking the public over taxes.

Property taxes and fees and other taxes inflicted by the state, local and even just the community that you live in are mind boggling.

I'm afraid I'm not rich enough to play this game.

The thing is, you'll pay that tax and the roads won't get fixed at any better rate than they are now.

I drive from Rockingham (work) to Asheville (home) 3-4 weekends a month (it's complicated)..... the Monroe Bypass is worth every penny....... my only question is "how about the Shelby bypass?"

I second that! Shelby is such a pain!

Thatā€™s the cost of having no income tax, the state gets itā€™s money from elsewhere. Business and population growth in TX have been crazy this past decade, so the taxes canā€™t be too bad relative to other states.

How hard would it be to accept, that somewhere in the bowels of state government building , there's an office with people in it saying:

"There's not enough people buying our toll roads...what can we do to alleviate the fact that the ruse we've played on the public is not working?"

"I've got an idea, let's let the roads they've already paid for deteriorate both in capacity and quality until paying twice for roads via tolls seems like a really good option!!"

One thing I have learned in the past month.

I will never complain about the cost of taxes and travel in North Carolina again.
You've been through NJ, haven't you?

I'll bite.
Few things are more irritating than trying to have a conversation with a person who is regularly the smartest person in a room full of children. They're used to always being right, never being questioned, and snapping/clapping in your face to make you stop presenting an alternative idea.

Trying to remember what all was discussed in this thread, but I have a question.

So, we got a bill in the mail for this toll road. It was when our daughter drove our car to Charlotte. They read the tag, I'm assuming.

What happens if you hop on this thing and your vehicle has no tag? Not even a temp tag?

I read today in the Herald Citizen that they are putting in facial recognition to count and catch people saying that they have three people in the car claiming they are HOV and driving for free. But I don't see how they could catch someone without a plate, but who knows.

You're an avid mountain bike rider that always has a bike rack mounted to his vehicle that just coincidentally blocks the plate reader...

Had a kayak hanging 3ft past the open tailgate of my truck. I wanted to pay the $15 on the NY State tolls but since they went 'Sans Booths' I couldn't!!!

Honest!!

I'm so far behind the times, I was looking for the baskets to toss my money in on my last (and I hope it's the last) trip to Raleigh a couple of summers ago!

The guys I was shooting with kindly explained about the cameras, and told me I'd be getting a bill....and I did!

Man, I'm old....and I really need to get out more! (I made my first trip to Asheboro today, so I'm branching out a bit!)
