Forgive me if this has already been answered, but a quick search didn't reveal a thread that specifically addressed my question.

Recently joined a hunting club, and the property is relatively thick with brush and woods. From most places we have stands or tree to climb, max distance I can range is less than 100 yd. Could probably stretch to 125 yd if a create some shooting lanes, but intend to stay 100 yd or less.

I have a pistol lower with a brace, and I am pondering a .300 blackout upper, unsuppressed for now, for hunting. Was thinking about 10.5-in .300 blackout upper.

My thoughts are:
- Would likely be much more maneuverable with a 5 round magazine in a climber than my bolt action rifles.
- Don't need the reach of my standard caliber bolt action rifles at that property.

Is a 10.5-in barrel with supersonic ammo gonna be enough to take a whitetail, assuming I do my part with shot placement?

Can anyone recommend a bullet weight or specific round, assuming the barrel length and proper shot placement will allow me to harvest a deer?

What about for a hog?

Any optics that would be appropriate?

Thanks.

I took a fairly big white tail buck with my home built 300BLK rifle with a 16" barrel using Hog Hammer ammo. One shot in the center of his chest, DRT. I recovered the projectile, perfectly mushroomed from just under the hide on his left side after it had gone through heart and one lung.

I don't know that you'll lose enough velocity with a 10" barrel to make a difference, but I would recommend being in double tap mode, just in case20161114_175011.jpg 20161115_073555.jpg 20161117_095138.jpg .

Get you a box of these and thank me later....... I've got a 10.5" blackout pistol that we've hunted with for 2 yrs now. I've killed two does and my daughter has killed a 7pt and two 8pt with it. Last year we shot the Federal 120gr Trophy Copper load and killed two deer with them but neither left an exit wound...... This year we switched to the Barnes and we've been thrilled with the results. Exits on all 3, including a 160lb 8pt. All our deer have been taken between 50 and 100 yds but I'd shoot one at 150 without hesitation. Total tracking on all deer combined MIGHT be 60 yards.Screenshot_20191110-140600.jpg

@InvisibleOne's grandson just killed a bear with a blackout. Maybe he can tell us what ammo he was using.
I was just typing as you rang my bell ...
My grandson took a 200 lb black bear with one shot from a 16" Blackout, using Hornady 110gr V-Max.
I good friend of mine has killed several deer each year with the exact same load, using a rifle I built 3 years ago.
They all drop DRT, no chasing required.
Hog Hammers are good, too, and the Barnes, and LeHigh. It mostly comes down to shot placement.
I hunt with a 9" Blackout SBR.

that’s a badass round.

8.5" SBR. I was using 187gr poly-tipped PNW subs. They got me two deer that year, but I don't recommend the ammo. I had to look for both the doe and the 200lb 6 pointer I shot.

Here's my setup..... Aero lower and 10.5" PSA upper with a 3-9x50 Burris Fullfield E1. It's a lot of scope but it gathers light well and it has the #4 reticle w/ illuminated dot. The dot makes it simple for my daughter and so far everything she's put it on has died. 20191111_090600.jpg
