When people ask about snow where I'm from I always say yes lots. On average over 12 ft a year and I have personally seen 4-5ft up to 10 ft drifts. So I saw this picture from 40 years ago today in a mountain pass town not terribly far from where I grew up.

In NC piedmont area that would shut us down for at least a week. Maybe more.

I left Michigan yesterday afternoon and 12" had been on the ground for 3-4 days, with more coming later this week.

I love snow.
I love snow down here because you get 2-6 inches and it immobilizes the entire area. I remember at 17 driving in a legit blizzard to watch the Cowboys playoff game at a friends house because the cable went out. There was at least 3 inches down and by the end of the game another 4-5. Never had a 4x4 the entire time growing up just FWD and snow tires.

I've always wanted to see many feet of snow! But I guess with the way we all go insane around here when the least little bit frosts the ground, it's just as well......lol.

Just putting that picture in the news would paralyze the eastern 3/4 of NC and all of SC. GA would just cease to exist as we know it.

I grew up in Michigan where you took your storm/screen doors off the house around Halloween... So you didn't get trapped in your house when you got the snow storm and/or snow drifts.
I wish I had a $5 bill for every time I've jumped out of second story barn doors into snow drifts that we're 6'+
40" of snow in 1 day is the biggest snow event I remember... Plows ran, roads never closed, bread was on the shelves. I think we missed 2 school days.
I love watching the "list of closures" scroll across the screen when the forecast calls for .5-1" (with no chance of sticking) here in Wilmington!!

I've heard there are MANY feet of snow to be seen there! If I could just use my transporter and plop myself down there for a bit then pop back home....I'd love to see it!

Most Snow I remember was winter of 1994. We had a nor'easter from the west and a tropical depression from the south come together over the state of WV and had 4 days of snow. It dropped 14 or so inches the day before the tropical moisture then another 36 one day and 14-15 the days after. We were out of school for almost 2 weeks because it was so cold the ice on the roads wouldn't melt. So it was like 2-3 inches of pure compacted ice and school was the only thing that shut down.

It's not the snow it's the ice that comes down and puts a 1/4" under the snow that you can't get traction on. True powdery snow ain't no trouble driving in. I was working in the hospital when we had the big ice storm in 2002 and it took all the power out for a week and you could go slding down the sidewaks just being pushed by wind

That's the beauty and the problem here. It snows and looks beautiful, but it's warm and sunny enough to melt the roads in a day and you can drive them. But, then it gets cold enough at night to refreeze and make black ice.

My wife is from Buffalo. Actually, she's from a town just outside called Elma, which sees more snow than Buffalo.

My dad's family is from Rhinelander, Wisconsin and points north into UP Michigan and northwest to Duluth. Spent many a Christmas up there.

@jmccracken1214 , I recall one op we jumped from the back-end of a CH-46; we thought the snow was a couple feet; it came up to our armpits. 500 feet down the mountain, no snow.

I am from Randolph, NY which is about 90 miles south of buffalo.

we usually got more than buffalo.

Lived in Alaska for a while growing up. My dad was USAF. Winter 1980 (our first there) went to bed no snow, woke up to 4’ of snow. My sister and I celebrated thinking no school. Nope, we had to walk our behinds to school. Now I chuckle when Winston-Salem shuts down for 1/2 inch.

Problem with our NC snow is it usually can't travel without it's punk friend called "ice."

Ice is of the debil. Look it up.

Most Ive been in was something likejust over 20in. Drifts at 4ft. This was in Portland Or xmas of 08 or 09...we never had that kinda snow the prior 30 years, then wham..got a good one where I lived in Gresham (burb east of Portland) the mayor declared state of emergency as fire, ems, police crews couldnt get around. National gaurd help with their Hummers. Never lost power, tv, etc. The entire time. After few days had to hike to corner store maybe quarter mile away for supplies..which at thst time consisted of more beer, smokes, chips and cat food. Took a week before I could drive anywhere..plows were tied up on major roadways and side streets were not a priority. Good times.

Came close here ladt year to thst amount..17" before we ran out of moisture. What sucked was our heat pump decided to blow fuses right then due to a short, so I had to drive out in it to get more.

Hoping we get a good amount of snow this year. Love it.

From Buffalo here, we used to get a few inches once in awhile. I love driving in it and with AWD (forester) would put my skills up against many. Last snow here I pulled out a stuck Nissan extera and then had to go around a Jeep Wrangler since he could hardly make headway up a snow covered hill.

Yeah, anything more than a dusting and they shut things down. But as was mentioned above, one of the problems we really run into is our tendency to get ice. Often our "snow" starts with freezing rain that puts a really nice glaze on everything, and then the snow falls on top...which when it melts during the day, freezes again at night.

And while I too think its silly when things shut down, I cant help but recall the fact that we get snow so rarely that people really don't get any experience in driving in it. Back in high school when things weren't quite as "closey" as they are now, I remember a number of kids who got killed each year when a "light snow" would fall, but they had no idea how to handle it. Its not really something that can be learned other than through experience.

If I look out my windows and see snow on the streets, I stay home. We only get snow a couple of times every year, we can afford to just shut down for it.

I remember going to school then on Monday, maybe Tuesday and having the rest of the week off.
It was great, that is until June and we're still in school with no AC.

When was it... 96 or 97 there was a pretty stout snow here. Even in JoCo, there was ~14" against my garage door. I had a Z28 and a Mustang 5.0 and lived at the bottom of a hill. Guess where I didn't go for 3-4 days (anywhere).

Never seen snow to that level here since then.

Heck....you even say the S word here in Wilmington and it's shutting everything down....city of emergency..call in national guard......etc

Lived in interior AK, not much snow at all normally, usually less than 4ft on the ground, might fall, but we'd lose it to sublimation.

Never got to play in Thompson Pass avg snowfall 500+ inches.

Ice is not unique to NC. We had freezing rain sometimes. Once I recall they shut down the highways, I was at work and stayed there unrelieved cause no one else lived in town and they never closed the runways.

Loved my Wrangler it got squirrely and it was damned cold, but fun af. Wife drove an '89 Camaro in AK and MI.

I just wish people here would get and stay in the right lane, not everyone needs to crawl.
