ICE purchased State DMV records to locate illegal aliens

Technology is great! US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) bought a year's worth of access to North Carolina driver's license data, which the agency used to identify and locate undocumented immigrants living in the state, for less than $27—about the cost of a large bucket of chicken at KFC.

Edit: Fake news, NC only issues DL for DACA not illegal aliens who are not in DACA.

Guys, this article - as it pertains to NC - is fake news.

As mentioned in the article, NC does not issue drivers licenses to illegal aliens. This policy started around 8 years back. There is not DMV database of illegals, because they don't have licenses issued in this state.

And the illegal's know not to apply for one too, so the premise that they can use denied applications as a way to round them up is bogus too.

It wouldn’t surprise me if some apply using fake documents, much like they do when they apply for jobs. Not sure how the database would be used, but like Google, Amazon, Microsoft and other tech companies, DHS likely sucks up all the data it can.

If they were stopped at the borders as they are in other countries, then this would be a non-issue.
I have no issue with people coming to this country to live as I do, just work thru the system as my forefathers/mothers did.

If I crossed into China, Iran, Russia, Mexico, etc would they give me free stuff and driver license?

The article does confirm that fact, and says that ICE has found a way to use the data:

No, but that argument stalls pretty quickly - who wants to be like China, Iran, Russia or Mexico? I prefer the "Nation of Laws" angle on this issue.

I've been to residences where a group of hispanics lived and found multiple people with the same name on their licenses.
They all used the same papers to get their licenses.

They sell your information everyday of the year. Ever wonder how attorneys get your names after tickets?

FACT: NCDMV does not issue licenses, nor state IDs to illegals.

If you can scrounge up a fake birth certificate which will pass scrutiny in the state of origin, and a social security number which matches the person and the Social Security offices passes off as genuine, of course you can get a fake license. That is not limited to illegal immigrants, though, and certainly would not show up on a "DMV list of illegal immigrant license holders"... which simply does not exist.

No need to multiply words when the issue is this black and white.

I agree that there are probably very few valid ID’s issues based on fake papers, it’s easier to just fake the ID.

nonetheless, there is useful data in the database even though it isn’t a DMV list of illegal immigrant Id holders. Simple example, tax records show that 5 men live at the same address, they all work for the same company which is 10 miles from their home address, none have filed tax returns or if they have they list different addresses, and none have a NC issued ID. It’s just another piece of data that can be used to focus enforcement efforts. Really if you pull in census data and some stuff like default language settings on web browsers and phones you could probably come up with a heck of a list. Not perfect, but data mining can get you close.
