MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Police said two suspects who carjacked a UPS truck on Thursday afternoon and led several police agencies through the streets of South Florida are dead.

The suspects who reportedly shot at police from the truck engaged police in a shootout resulting in their deaths on Miramar Parkway and Flamingo Road.

Images from Chopper 4 showed at least 20 police officers, some with long guns and a stopped UPS truck.

The exchange of gunfire with police ended as quickly as it began.

“The armed suspects engaged law enforcement, opened fire, exchanged fire between law enforcement and the suspects,” explained George Piro, Special Agent in Charge of the Miami Field Office. “Unfortunately, the suspects are now deceased, but also two additional innocent civilians deceased.”

The dead include the kidnapped UPS driver, who has been identified by friends as Frank Ordonez, and a innocent bystander killed in their car.

No word from law enforcement whether shots fired from the kidnappers’ weapons killed the UPS driver and the bystander.

“We have just begun to process the crime scene and you can imagine it is going to be a very complicated crime scene plus the other multiple crimes scenes,” Piro said.

Driver killed by cops, according to news on the radio this morning, but who knows.

I can't help but think there had to be a better way. There isn't enough info yet to really know what happened. Seems like an excessive number of cruisers behind the UPS truck though.

What a waste... and for what?

Four people dead for the unknown contents of a UPS truck.
Reports said this started out as a jewelry store robbery. The suspects fled in a truck and then hijacked the UPS truck.

Regardless, there had to have been a better way to handle this.
Cops Never Back Down.

As long as refusing an order cannot be condoned, and must be answered with lethal force, there is no other way to handle this.

......I always figured they would hit the UPS trucks for either guns or drugs.

I had read this stared out as a high end jewelry store robbery and they were repelled by gunfire from the store as the police arrived. That started the chase and hijacking of the UPS truck. Supposedly rounds struck the City Hall building across the street.

However, there was a different incident where an Amazon truck was robbed at gunpoint.

......I always figured they would hit the UPS trucks for either guns or drugs.

Seems like a low percentage payoff. I wonder how many UPS trucks routinely have guns in transit? I expect certain routes that deliver to gun stores might be riper targets.

All the fun drugs don't routinely get shipped. Most controlled substances you have to pick up in person and show ID.

Not at random, Inside information.

Why does the whole frickin police department feel the need to show up when stuff like this happens? I counted over 75 police vehicles go by in the video of OP's post. A total waste of time and resources. Do they do it because they think it might be an opportunity for them to get all tactical or something?

I remember several years ago in Charlotte there was a guy hold up in a house, and there were tons of police everywhere surrounding the house and all up and down the street. I remember thinking "all of that for just one guy? I guess it's a good thing there's not two of them".

That reminds me of when Sherman was leaving Atlanta, and there was a lone Rebel up on Stone Mtn waving a flag. Sherman send one of his best men up there to get him. The man didn't come back. The rebel still waved his flag. Sherman sent an 8 man squad up there to get him. They didn't come back. The Rebel still waved his flag. Sherman sent a whole passle of soldiers up there to get him. One came back. He said, "General, there's two of them!"

I dare say these days they need it for scene control and safety both from crowds and the actual suspects.

Reminds me of the joke about a town in TX was having a riot over something. The sheriff panicked and called the TX ranger office asking for help. When a single ranger showed up, he called the office back and asked why they only sent a single ranger. The response was, You've only got 1 riot, right?

UPS trucks have GPS, no need to go full LAPD OJ on the truck.
Yes they were dangerous suspects but the drivers did not have to die from police fire.
Unfortunate the driver is not permitted to carry on the job.

I guess it's good some other emergency didn't occur while all these jackwagons were jockeying to be the first on scene, because there probably wouldn't have been anyone left to respond except the city dogcatcher. In some of the video, you can see some of the officers actually using people in their cars as cover. SMH

You should read Day of Wrath by Forstchen to consider what happens when resources are spread thin. So much of response focuses on single events and doesn't consider multiple simultaneously occurring incidents.

Geez, I can hear the post assessment now...
And here, we have Joe using this bus full of nuns, for cover.

Cops with Wunder Nines, clear leather and qualify once a year. Spray and pray tactics. Of course they killed the driver.

I'm not sure what to think here. I know the police were in a tough spot but I wonder what would have happened if they had backed off instead of returning fire.

With the helicopters in the air on the first video and the reality of today's surveillance equipment it doesn't seem likely they could have gotten far after attracting that kind of attention. (Edit. Just noticed what Button Pusher had said about GPS.)

I know I'm armchair quarterbacking it but it doesn't appear that they were dealing with terrorists bent on causing max casualties.

Something just bugs me about seeing the assumed UPS driver trying to escape and getting shot as the three closest officers dump their mags.

This was the first day the UPS man was driving his route.

They placed all cops involved in shooting on administrative leave as FBI is investigating. We will see what’s comes of it I guess.

Nothing, move along folks, nothing to see here.
It'll get buried as time goes by, Christmas is coming and there is shopping to be done.

Comment from another forum, "Remember people, only the police should have guns. They have special training and shit."

I'll admit I've not been to a class where they yell "threat" and you have to do a mag dump around other students at a hostage target with concealment. So the training is different.

If I were in one of those vehicles that the police were using as cover, my vehicle and I would have been moving. One way or another.

I was discussing this with the wife today. In various classes (and matches), etc we've taken cover behind vehicles, learned to shoot around/under/out of/whatever them, but I can't remember ever once actually thinking about what's inside or even looking. Using vehicles as cover is probably second nature to many, but how many have been trained to think if they should be using a particular vehicle for cover?

Presumably all the people with enough sense to drive the hell out of the war zone did so, and those left were trapped or frozen.
