More outrage from Charlotte Police Chief

He says that many of the guns were stolen, I wonder if he’s tried to return them to their proper owners. Maybe we should propose a state law that all the serial numbers be posted on a public website.

Better yet a law requiring all law enforcement agencies in the state that have stole firearm return them to rightful owners.

Yeah man, there's a reason why I try to keep a list of my guns and their serial numbers somewhere - because if stolen and I report them stolen, i expect them to be returned when found. BECAUSE THEY'RE MINE, NOT YOURS, CHIEF.

The law is pretty clear. They want vendors to be able to resell guns,” said Putney. “I think it’s wrong-headed. I’m never gonna break the law, but I am gonna say we have a law enforcement reason where we shouldn’t be adding more weapons to the hands of young people.”
And there lies the problem. The Chief has ZERO say in the law, his job is to enforce it while upholding his oath.

He’s on his way out so he has very little to lose taking this silly stance.

Also, I attended a firearms forum at Davidson a college years ago, after receiving a GRNC alert, and CMPD sent then Captain Putney, who like a good politician, read the room and realized that the majority of the room was pro-gun to one degree or another. He stated something to the affect of, “I grew up in the south, I grew up shooting and hunting, and guns are a part of Southern culture. Safe and responsible ownership is critical.” So much for that stance.

He’s relying on the part of the law that allows the department to keep guns for training purposes. Clearly the intent is not to allow for 18k firearms for training. How many of each type do you need?

“I don’t want to be responsible for having one of those weapons take a life here in Charlotte when we could have done something that’s within our purview because of a law enforcement reason to keep that from happening and that’s what I stand by,” said Putney.

Do you even English, bro?

Welcome to Char-Cago fellas. unfortunatly it's also a huge economic engine driving this state and the northern upstate of SC. And what fun we get to experience when the RNC comes to town!

Clearly the Chief is engaging in 478D chess.

He needs to make space in the evidence room; the guns lawfully should be returned to their owners but he doesn't want the social blame laid at his feet for more guns leaving police possession.

Soooo, he creates this public conundrum in hopes that one of the state higher-ups will force him to move those guns, therefore relieving him of his conscience.
I live less than 1/4 mile from the Charlotte city limit but in SC so I have ZERO influence with any NC politician. The really great part of that is our crime goes up due to Charlotte's weak enforcement but there's nothing we can do to change the enforcement. I am kind of hoping GRNC or some group of folks who might be harmed by this decision will file suit against the city to help the Chief with his conscience.

How is he going to determine the rightful owners without a Gun Registry and Bill of Sales?
I was thinking the same thing. Then it occurred to me that ideally people should be able to report serial numbers of stolen guns, but in reality how many people could? This would open the door for demands for a registry, which is probably worse.

Apparently the firearms were traced far enough with the normal methods to determine the ones left over are illegal ( stolen ?).
many of which were illegal that we’re seizing
Police say many of the confiscated guns are stolen firearms.

So what's the "Public Safety Hazard?" Law Enforcement and the bureaucracy or selling them to a FFL for proper sales to the Public at Large?

and because I think it is a public safety hazard to keep putting more and more guns that we’re seizing, many of which were illegal that we’re seizing, and then turning them back and reselling them.”

I bet the majority are hi-points, Jimenez Bryco Jennings, grandpaws old single shot shotguns and your obligatory Glock Foe-Tays. Seems like every time you see a po-leese evidence locker's contents, 70% are throwaway garbage.

They do that already. It's buried at the bottom of this page:
https://charlottenc.gov/CMPD/organization/Pages/AdminSvcs/Property-Evidence.aspx

Mine's not on there.
Interesting tidbit from that link:

How long will you hold my property?
Once we send you a letter you have 70 days to contact the Property and Evidence Division indicating you want your property returned to you. Firearms are held for 180 days. After these time frames have expired the property is either destroyed or sent to auction.

I don't see his reason as an option IAW the law as stated in the article.

"Because we're the cops and have cop reasons" shouldn't fly.

Chief Putney is probably angling for a political appointee position, either on Governor Cooper's staff or on the democrat president's staff after the next election cycle.

people should be able to report serial numbers of stolen guns
They are, Whenever someone reports a stolen gun to the police the serial numbers are added to a national database and if a LEO anywhere in the country has an occasion to run it it flags. A lot of people have been charged with possession of a stolen gun.

Could be, he's retiring at the end of the year.

If that's the case I hope he has a good copy of the want ads, he's going to need them.
