New Smith & Wesson M&P9 Shield EZ

how are these easy? is it just a weaker recoil spring? would that compromise reliability?

They are incredibly Easy!
I haven't shot one, but I have racked the slide.
Must be a minimal recoil spring.
Since it's designed that way, it should not affecct reliability.

Not sure about the 9, but the 380 also has a weak spring in the magazine, as well as thumb button on the follower like a 22 mag. I think the entire series was conceived to overcome objections from newer and maybe aging shooters.

There have been instances where the recoil spring worked it's way over the end of the guide rod; and some need to be replaced. This info gathered from the M&P website.

Clay and Fuquay Guns has ... or maybe itā€™s ā€œhadā€ by now ... a couple and priced at $399.99.

I always thought that spring strength was carefully thought out to make the slide move rearward quick enough to enable the it to help eject the spent casing ,and strong enough to then load the next cartridge without causing a failure to feed. Its cool if this works like its advertised. I just cant help but wonder why then all other guns use a stronger spring than whats necessary to achieve this desired goal. longevity maybe?

Maybe a greater degree of reliability. The recoil spring in my new 9mm Hellcat is more than a challenge and it moves the slide almost at the speed of light. I think these "micro" slides have critical timing issues requiring heavy springs.

yea that makes sense. it seems to me that the shorter slides need a stiffer spring to move that little slide quicker bc the shell casing size doesnt change. its an interesting thing to ponder. my old gunsmithing teacher said john browning tried all sorts of springs/ barrel lengths before deciding on the final dimensions of the gov model. i remember asking him if he had ever chopped a full size down to a commander length. he said yes but it took him so long to get it to function properly that he wished he had not taken the project on...that was in the 70s though. 1911s have come along way since then obviously
