Did You Go Shooting Today

Had some test loads worked up that had been sitting on the bench for a while, so I drove up to FLD yesterday to test them out. I was using the same charge of Sport Pistol powder in 45acp, with large Winchester primers, and an assortment of different small primers. I was seeing a huge difference in velocity between large (WLP) and small (WSP) Winchester primers, but the Win small pistol magnum (WSPM) were as good as the large primers. The CCI 500 and 550 primers were in the middle, and interestingly, the CCI500 primers had more velocity than the CCI550.

Don't listen to anybody that tells you there is no difference between large and small primers in 45acp, you need to work loads up for each one.

Yes I went today. I continued to put my new Don William Colt through its paces. It is an amazing shooter. I have to get some mag spring kits for my old Wilsons. Some of them are not locking back the slide while all the other mags are running fine. I shot outside my comfort zone. The range I was at today does not allow me to draw from the holster when it is busy. When its slow they let me roll so today I shot the half test at 7, 10 and 15 yards from the low ready. I could not get my time under 4.5 seconds at 15 yards and keep it clean. I would rush and jerk the trigger. Inside of that I was pretty clean but even at 7 yards I can't push below 4.5 seconds or I am guaranteed to drop a shot. I need to work on my cadence. I can shoot the test clean at 7 so it makes sense. I did not work at 5 yards.

While I was there I witnessed a complete duffer with a brand new Daniel Defense AR15 with a Leupold scope all decked out. He and his teenage son couldn't figure out why it wouldn't run. They were riding the charging handle and were not seating the mag properly. They asked the range officer for help and he looked at the gun and realized it was bone dry. Not a drop of lube on the entire gun. The bolt was dry. It was sad to see. I gave him some Mil Pro 7 I had in my bag and amazingly after the range officer lubed it up for him it ran without a problem. Idiot with more money than sense. He also was having trouble zeroing it because he was having a hard time balancing the foregrip on the bench while he shot off a rest. The guy needed serious help.

Anyway I also shot a No Name 1911 in 9mm ran 100% sorry @fieldgrade a CZ Shadow 2 and my new fun gun the Beretta 82. I have to get the Colt broken in before my new Warbird Leather arrives.

How many reloads did you do on the clock? Get back to me with the hard facts. ;)

As many as necessary and of course all were done SLOWWWWWLY. I am sure a snails space compared to you.

A buddy and I went to PHA today. Ran him through a couple of drills to see what he needed to work on, and I did some myself. I was getting consistent 1.6-1.8 draw to first round head shot, at 5-7 yards. I'm gonna get me one of those dang wizard shirts @BatteryOaksBilly, sooner or later, probably later, lol.

After almost 2 years, I finally found my timer and was able to bring it out this past weekend to check myself and my shooting partners times. We were shooting at 6 inch round steels , quantity of 6 rounds at 15 yards and competing against each other. It was amazing how much time we were able to shave off as the Bill drill went on. I think using a timer will help any speed orientated or competition shooter reduce their times because it forces you to improve. Try different draw techniques and see what works best for you..But just remember, a slightly slower hit beats a real fast miss ever time..

Love it my other piece of advice is don't be a slave to the timer.

Yes, and I had a great day! 2 targets were with the G19, 2 with the 1911 in .45, most at 9 feet, with one at 15 feet, or whatever it says on the actual target!

I took some advice (!) and went closer in with my distance, and tried to get nice tight groups. Not so great with the G19, but not bad with the .45! I'm always happy when shooting either of the 1911s, so it was a good day at the range.

It is always a good day when the bullets holes are touching each other no matter what distance you were shooting at.

Like I always say, it is easier to get one-hole groups with really big bullets.

At TSA in Raleigh this afternoon, tried out my Beretta 81BB police trade and the new Ruger Wrangler and the M&P 9.
The 81BB shoots nice, have to get used to it as well as the Wrangler.

I was able to go out to the farm for a bit before the heavy rain started. I had loaded some fairly warm 44 Mag loads last night with Lil Gun powder and wanted to see if they worked OK. I took a Super Blackhawk and a 329. They shot well out of the Ruger and made less of a fireball that the other loads with 2400. They were unpleasant out of the 329 just like most other full power 44 Mag ammo. I was able to cut down a 3" Holly tree with the few rounds I shot. I did see a bunch of turkeys and a half dozen deer. I had to run errands and could not stay long.

I only ask because I find all my guns run great...
till the shot timer goes off.
If something is going to come off the rails, be it me, the gun, the mags, the gear, or the ammo, that’s when it rears its head.

For me anyway.

Yup this is true. I don't run competitions but I do shoot against the timer every range session. I do things like load 3 mags with a random amount of rounds. 2 mag pouches and one in the gun. I set a par time based on distance and other factors. I then shoot the 3 mags against the timer. If I beat the par time twice I lower the par time. I am still slow by most peoples standards but I am also trying to shoot it clean. I find that when I rush I yank or jerk the trigger and throw shots low. The only malfunction I encounter is when my off hand bumps the mag release/lock because my grips is poor at speed. Speeding up the process does seem to induce more issues.

So @BU2scwMJL hit me up at about 1:30 with a 'great temps for shooting today' because he knows I dont like shooting when it's cold.
I said to heck with it, let's do it!
So I got to shoot the ruger predator 223 and kimber 9mm today
Cool hanging out!

Other than it being muddy and wet on the ground, it felt great outside. Felt great to go shooting with my buddy @HMP. Found a mag the RDB doesn't like, had 1 double feed so I had to take the gun apart to clear it, other than that, good times were had by all.:D

Quick trip to see it the AR-9 pistol was fixed after I screwed it up by trying to put a Walther magazine into a Glock receiver. After 4 or 5 magazine run hard, zero problems. Then played around with the AR 15 pistol at 25 yards with pop-up sights and a tennis ball on the berm. Managed to move it around and even between the legs of the target stand right in front of the berm. It ended up being good practice. My friend had never shot anything suppressed so I brought out the 1911-22. Using Winchester HP (1280 ft/sec) he shot a couple magazines with a smile on his face.
Next up was the 308 and just playing around with some 150 gn FMJ. No problem at 300 and 400 on the bigger steel. When I went tot he 4 or 6 inch round steel to hit it I had to adjust the elevation from -7.7 (from BC) to 8 and was making impact at 400 yards.

Went to PHA today for a couple of hours. Ran the old G-48, my 1911, and the Taurus G2C. I'm at around 400 through the Taurus now with no malfunctions. Then finished up with about 100 rounds through the AR pistol. Good times.

I put 140 rounds through my 6.5 Grendel and 60 rounds through my .458 Socom this past Saturday at “The Range Complex” in Fayetteville.

I have a “pet” load for the 6.5 Grendel now and I took the time to get data for a dope card, I’ll need to repeat everything for various weather conditions but I did find that the dope for my hand loads is very close to the Hornady Black 123gr ELD factory loads which is awesome!

The .458 Socom loading is still good out to 300 yards.

Four hours of 1:1 training yesterday.

Went to PHA today to attempt the latest rimfire challenge. Also had two loaded .40 mags leftover from class yesterday, so I stopped at one of the pistol bays and practiced drawing, prepping the trigger, and hitting steel.

I love the PHA range, I used to really like the speed steel matches they used to hold there. I would become a member there if they didn't charge a large initiation fee.

Shot some reloads with a new batch of 3N38 and got the 1100 FPS I wanted (even at a COAL that my Glock mags struggled with them)! Going to cut the COAL 0.01" and see if I can't get closer to 1125 FPS.

TL/DR: I started out poorly and finished with satisfactory improvement - which is enough for a Christmas Eve short session.

Function tested my 10 new PMAGs, which gave me an opportunity to spend some time on my grip. Due to age and physical issues, I have to work hard on my grip consistency, hand placement, grip tension, stance, shoulder position, hand-eye coordinationetc. ad infinitum - which is very frustrating to me. Ican still remember when muscle memory carried me through without having to spend so much time and effort on grip fundamentals, but neuropathy plays funny tricks on all the extremities.

It is a great day!

I did! Multiple kinds of targets, most at 3-4 yards. I did do the NRA target at 45 feet with the 1911 and the Glock....wow! That is far, and really underscores how awful my G19 shooting is compared to my 1911 9mm shooting!
I had fun shooting on Christmas Eve, and any day shooting is a great day for me! All in all, I'm happy with my progress!
Thanks again to Button Pusher for the targets I've shot the last 2 days, I've been challenged with his circles, and dots, and colored shapes.

Sorry for the hijack but my stepfather had neuropathy. Best wishes in dealing with it!

Sorry you have to deal with that. I got mine from chemo, and it's hard to describe hands and feet being at the same time numb and painful!

Went to Frontline today to do some testing. First, I had purchased a CAA micro conversion kit for my old M&P 1.0 at the last gun show and I wanted to get the red dot zeroed on it. I had some 45acp test loads, so I shot those in my steel-frame Witness. I had not shot my poly Witness 40 in a long time, so I took that along and put 100 rounds through it. Lastly, I shot my GP 100. Before I left, I took my Witness 45 to the steel side of the pistol range and blew through 100 rounds. It sure is satisfying ringing steel.
