The Smith & Wesson M&P 22 compact. I’m sure others may have covered this model on a rimfire comments thread but wanted to share my positive findings. I’m a CCH instructor and bought this model 2 years ago to add to my small stable of “trainer” 22 semi autos that I use in my classes. I bought it because reviews said unlike most rimfire semi autos, that this would feed and function well right off the bat with most common 22 LR ammo. This was very appealing, Especially after my experiences with the Walther p22 and even the Ruger Mk2 and 22/45.
So after an initial field strip, clean and lube, it’s had about 4000 rounds through it now with no issues. Including plenty of standard velocity 1050 FPS stuff. And HV bulk pack hollow points. So....bottom line the M&P compact impresses me and is a great gun for the money. Plus, it mimics the same controls as it’s centerfire M&P big brothers and most modern semi autos. Sorry Walther, (I have two P22s) but they just don’t compare to the good track record of my M&P. By the way, the overall student favorite of all my trainer guns is still the All steel Ruger Mk2 but the M&P compact is second.

Second that! Although the MkII may end up taking second place on my training tool list in favor of the Glock 44.

It actually makes sense as a training tool, since its dimensions mimic the 19. Don't get me wrong - I've used the MkII as a training tool for more than a generation now. But ...

I have two, one my wife and I take to the range and have fired over 50,000 rounds. The other is her house gun since she doesn't like recoil from even 380's. The only problem we've had with the one we shoot at the range is a broken firing pin, and a roll pin that kept working out. Since I carry a Shield it's a lot cheaper to shoot 22's then 9mm's. And my wife has really gotten good with the 22c so I figure it's better then nothing when I'm not home.
