Dec19/Jan20 Rimfire Challenge

If you win this month with iron sights you have earned not just the right to pick the next target, but probably a sponsorship, some serious product endorsements, and maybe your face on an optometrists billboard!!
Agreed. I’m not sure I can see those targets at 50 with open sights! Might have to break out my first 22lr, my dad’s 514, and see if I can even hit the row I’m aiming at, much less a particular shape!

Well curiosity got the best of me... Haha!

Henry Small Game Carbine, Skinner peep sights, Geco ammo.

I decided to give myself the benefit of a hit regardless of where that particular round may have been "aimed" because at 50 yards that paper might as well be my bank statement... Just a black and white blur.

I scored a 9.

A few days late, but here's a couple submissions. I shot this last Sunday but am just now getting around to posting this.

Tough little targets, but challenging for sure. Pretty chilly when I shot this around 0830 Sunday morning, so I'll give this a try with the .17HMR next time.

EDIT - recalculated my score as I was counting 2 points for a hit in the white, not 3. Bumped me up a little bit

ENTRY #1
Ruger 10/22 (standard model)
Federal Automatch .22LR ammo
Bushnell 3-9 optic

I decided I better go out there today while we had some decent weather and no rain. Low 50's with a little wind 6-10 mph. Not too bad at all.

Inspired by some of the earlier posts, I decided to shoot 3 cards with 3 different rifles.

First up, I present a Remington 514 that was my dad's. My grandpa used to take me shooting with it when I was little, but that's been many years.

I rested it across my range bag and stacked some rear bags to try to get a little stability (actually needed one more from the pic). Shooting CCI Standard Velocity. All I could see was a sheet of paper, and I couldn't see a single shape on the card! I shot 15 shots, went down and took a peek. I tried to adjust and took 15 more shots and took another peek (too far down). Then shot the final 10. I said 18 points, but I gave myself 3 points for target 3C even though I hit that guy 3 times! It doesn't mean anything, but I figured a bull was a bull when you can't even see the target.

Next up is the squirrel gun. My CZ 452 with Simmons 4-12 scope. Shooting CCI Standard Velocity, again across my range bag with stacked rear bags. Did better than I expected with a 34.

Wind started to pick up a little on 4, and big time on 5. I didn't adjust at all on 5, and it cost me. I couldn't adjust for it consistently on 6, 7, 8. I was pretty happy anyway. Happy to score that and feel like I left some shots out there.

And lastly, same rifle I always shoot. My CZ 455 with Sightron 10-50 scope, Bipod and rear bags. Shooting Eley Match. I forgot to take another pic today, but it is the same as always. This is actually the first card I shot, when the wind was the calmest. The wind picked up a few times and I adjusted badly for it, resulting in a few of the really bad shots. I scored it a 59.

Thanks for the inspiration to go out and break out some of my other rifles. I had a good time today. It was a lot harder to shoot that 514 than I remember, but... We weren't shooting that far out either. I think the inability to aim small, miss small really made it difficult too. I just had to try to hold in relation to the edges of the paper mostly.

Well, I thought I could give you a run for your money with my laser-like Marlin 917V, but alas it was not to be. Bumped up my score from the .22LR attempt, but those 17gr pills can get pushed around in the slightest breeze.

Marlin 917V in .17HMR
Mueller 8.5-25x optic
Hornady 17gr VMAX ammo
Front/Rear bags only

SCORE = 43

I tried this today in the rain.. Covered the target in clear tape in hopes that it'd hold up. Not that great looking tbh, it's supposed to be dry tomorrow, so maybe I'll try without the tape..
Cz 457 22lr on a cheap bipod
Vortex 4-16
Sk magazine can ammo
Shooting prone for the first time.

How’d you score? Please don’t make us try to count. :D

Great to see the new shooters! Keep posting your targets and remember we like to see your setup too!

20191218_164126.jpg sunshade keeps the rain off the objective! This rifle is the first time I've tried for accuracy over speed before, it's been a difficult learning experience for me. I printed out a couple of the monthly targets, it's supposed to be dry and only blowing 10mph tomorrow!

That's a really nice looking rifle.

Thank you. I went out today with a friend, we both shot the challenge targets again. Lack of rain really made a difference, there was a weird 10ish mph breeze that was varying directions a lot. At the bench it was mostly coming from slightly behind and the right. 20 feet in front of us it was quartering from behind us going left.. Made for some interesting misses.

It is chilly out there! And thanks for adding in the range pic.
All that’s left is a pile of brass and a little puff of smoke. :D

I’ll get it scored up when I’m somewhere a little warmer!!

Ok. Two targets. Mid-30s, slight breeze, clear skies...target in the sun and me in the shade.

CZ455 Tacticool
Bushnell 6-18X
Caldwell bags

Shot two targets. As seen in an earlier pic, I did them like I’ve done in the past, shooting one vertical and one horizontal. Sometimes it really helps to focus you on the target to shoot it different than it was designed.

2CE9E7EF-18CE-41AD-9B05-5962B3EEDE8F.jpeg

First up was the vertical using CCI SV. Scored a 32.

C0B0A324-1998-46FD-8746-D5E56F967AB8.jpeg

Note: there’s a hit on C5, but that’s not the one I was aiming at. I drew arrows to show which target the hole actually belonged to.

Next up was the horizontal shooting S&K Rifle Match. First time using that ammo. This was the last shot I took before starting on the target, after slight adjustments when swapping ammo and confirming zero...so I had high hopes.

01602DA0-9769-4E9E-9772-A5918B3CADD7.jpeg

So I’m my mind, I’m thinking I should get at least a 1 on all of them. But man, it’s hard to stay focused for 40 rounds, especially when you’d already shot 40. Scored a 47 on this one

94074BDD-5C3A-47D3-965E-708B7445485A.jpeg

On the vertical, I sometimes went left to right, and sometimes looped around and went right to left on the second row (10rd mags gave me two rows per mag). But it was still all the bigger targets before starting on the smaller. On the horizontal I went left to right all the way...so four shots on the bigger targets follow by four on the smaller.

I'm seeing some great shooting this month! I have my targets printed, just need to get out to the range.

Most disappointing thing for me was I’d printed some of the previous targets that I’d planned to shoot since I never got around to it. Left them all at home. :(

Nice shooting BW!! My CZs have all liked SK RM as well, except for the current one. It could be this batch of RM though. This batch hasn’t shot great in any of the rifles I’ve tried it in.

As for the targets, I’ve started keeping a folder in my range bag with a bunch of the current targets and the old targets both so I don’t forget them and can still play around.

The problem is my entire range bag was still at the house.

Luckily I’d been to a training class the day before and had a box left in the truck with a pair of muffs and an old pair of safety glasses.

So I had that, plus my rifle, a ziploc bag with my CZ mags, and the current target I’d printed out and tossed in the front seat. Nothing else useful.

I found some time today to do some shooting! I did a little experimenting with some different ammo. I had a few rounds of different RWS and some SK Standard. I shot one target with 4 different kinds and scored a 48. I then shot my best target with SK Standard which I got as a door prize from DPRC. High score of 50.
Targets shot at 50 yards, rifle is CZ 455 Tacticool with bipod and bag, ammo on best target was SK Standard.
Scope is Athlon Helos BTR 6-24×50 shot at 18 power.20191226_162650.jpg 20191226_182135.jpg 20191226_182106.jpg

Wow. That is extremely impressive with different ammos! For example, shooting my current lots of Eley and SK RM, their POI ins not even close. Did you sight them in on another page before shooting the 10 on that target?

Your rifle definitely likes that batch of Geco Match as well.

The next couple days should be pretty great. Maybe we can get some more posts up here. I haven’t shot my air rifle in a while, so I may spend most of my time on it.

I shot a bunch of Geco match to get the gun warmed up. Then I shot the ten shots of each back to back. I figured they are all made in the same place so it shouldn't make that much difference.

I warmed up on this little pop up target I made. 8 inch plate with 1/2 inch hole and a pop up behind the hole is painted bright orange and you can see it if you hit the center hole. Shot this at 50 yards too.20191226_195448.jpg 20191226_195433.jpg

That is super impressive then. They were all very consistent.

Nice! Shot my airgun yesterday for a 54. Thought I might bring it back out today. Now, you got me contemplating pulling the CZ out!

Went riding with my son instead. Now my wife is out hanging out in a hammock out past the end of the range... so won’t be squeezing in one target today.
