Kobe Bryant killed in helicopter crash

Typically helicopter crashes happen at lower altitudes. Helicopters are very safe at higher altitudes where the pilot has time to autorotate if they lose engine power.

ALL helicopter crashes happen at ground level unless it's a mid-air!

Autorotation is fine if you are going down for only a loss of engine power.

If you are going down due to fire it's easy to lose control.

Many helicopters crash because of control failure (cable, control rod, drive link) in which they may impact inverted or any position.

Not trying to correct you but there could be many issues causing them to impact the ground.

No I agree with you. I was being one directional with the altitude thing.

He took me up a few times to practice them. Talk about your balls going into your throat.
What did your father do?

And do you mean that your father practiced engine failures etc? Sounds wild, sounds very scary

EVERYBODY who flies helicopters practices engine failures! Single and dual if multi-engined.

You have to know how to survive when it gets quiet.

Yeah practice engine failure and autorotate.

Basically get up to altitude. Dump power and then dump the collective which takes all the lift out.

You drop like a stone. And oh yeah you rotate in the opposite direction of the rotor spin because you also take all the lift out of the tailrotor too to keep the rotor speed up.

In an actual emergency you would pull lift at the last possible second which stops the rotors from spinning and then you slam on the ground but at a survivable speed.

In practice you pull power and lift again about 100 ft from the ground.

Are the networks already sending out invites for the tribute show they'll be airing?

Right before it started the spin, it looked like something fell away from the back of the helicopter.

Definitely looks like it would be instantaneous.

Couldn't care less... Rich asshole rapist goes down in his private helicopter... No great loss to society...

Also supported the national anthem protest.... how soon we forget.

What pisses me off is 7 others died (possibly not related to him). The pilots, statistically speaking, were probably former service members. They know who they were and not a peep about any of them...

To hell with the media.

Smart kid
Hornets were trash, he wanted a place with some teammates that could help him.

Besides, how many 18 year olds you meet that dont think they are something special?
All Kobe ever wanted from his teammates was the ball.
I was around thirty and watched the drama leading up to the draft in 91 play out everyday and kobi came off as a true Richard. When you were watching it did you have a different impression?

I didnt watch.
But, I know that if I were being drafted I wouldnt want to go to a garbage team

I attended a lot of those game and the hornets were one of the most entertaining teams in the league.. if you didn't attend the games I guess you wouldn't know.
On the other hand I was a big time Lakers fan from the days of Kareem , and suffered through the first years of Kobe being there but after Shaq left and Kobe the ball hog took over I quit watching first the Lakers then the NBA altogether

I think there was more to the story than rape. I don't know that any of the details ever truly came out. But yeah same here I'm not shedding any tears. I do remember him buying his wife like a 4-5 million dollar ring afterwards to apologize to her. So I can only imagine what the victim got.
An STD most likely.

Reading a few things that make a CFIT situation sound likely.

That would make it a most likely instant death with no advance knowledge of the impending doom to come.

He was a very gifted athlete as far as I can tell. I did not know about the 19 year old or the anthem protest. I pay about as much attention to sports as I pay to the dried up canine excrement in my back yard.

However....

He was a father, a son, and a husband, and tomorrow his wife will be planning TWO funerals.

Say what you want about the dead man. What if it were YOUR spouse and child? Personally, I’d be done....I would be an absolute basket case. Not even sure if “recovery” would still be in my vocabulary.

My prayers are with his family, and all the families affected by this tragedy. Perhaps the 19 year old finally got her justice....

Just saw that a baseball coach, his wife and their teenage daughter also died in the same crash....[emoji22]

Prayers for their family as well....

I’m sure there’s info on the others that died, too. Just haven’t seen it yet.

If you don't like Kobe and have expert, first hand opinions on what allegedly occurred, it's still a terrible way to go out. In addition, it's been reported that 7 other people were onboard including at least 2 kids.

I'm pretty shocked. I had just seen him on tv the night before congratulating Lebron for passing him on the all time scoring list.

Just reported that an Air Force plane crashed in Afghanistan with 5 souls. I wonder if that news will get 1/10 the media reporting as the news that a guy can bounce a ball is getting.
Yes, I do feel bad for Bryant’s family and the families of the others that perished but enough media stories on Bryant.

How right you are!

Society has some priorities AFU!

Honestly, seeing how foggy it was with the mountains around, I’m surprised they had clearance to take off.

That is known as "Getthereitis". It's all on the pilot no matter how many times Mr. Bryant or others threatened to fire him for not going up........ if that's what happened. It's a far too common tale in the aviation community, especially in general aviation.

I imagine that If you get used to things you tend to get too comfortable with them sometimes...… such as flying. If you get have several hours of flying experience and you have been through unfavorable conditions..... you get used to it and you thinks it's not a big deal if you know what your are doing. Its not different from driving in winter weather...…… You may have driven in it countless times and had zero problems..... but all it takes is one time. The local news stations always advise not to travel, but some of us do anyway because of past experiences. I don't know what the case is in this circumstance but I don't want to see the media make a big deal out of something that several pilots probably do sometimes.... and 99.9 percent of the time they are OK.

Purportedly, the tower/aircraft transmission record (and radar tracking):
