What is the best product to use to protect non-SS magazines from rusting?
The outside of my Sig P232 magazines will begin rusting after a couple of days wear in hit, humid, sweaty summer weather if I don't keep an eye on them. Is there some kind of magic potion, other plain ol' oil, that I can use to better protect them?

Ballistol is the best in my opinion, just due to ease of use and effectiveness. Honestly never really had a reason to add lubricant or cleaner to a magazine though.

I dump things in a coffee can of engine oil (Mobil 1) turn up the jug after every oil change.

Then I forget about for a few weeks. Take it out, let it drip dry for a few days. Then wipe it off thoroughly. Seems to work great.

Started off with a edc pocket knife. If I forgot for even a day it would have rust... so last time I took it completely apart I got mad and dumped the parts in a can with some spare oil on top. Then did the above process. Two years that knife hasnā€™t had rust. Just lube the pivot once in a blue moon.

Iā€™ve since done that to several hand tools in the shop, as well as a few blued magazines, especially a marlin .17 mag, that thing would get rust if you blinked at it lol. All seem gtg since.

Ballistol is hard to beat. I have a microfiber rag that I spray with Ballistol and wipe down firearms with after cleaning them. Iā€™ll seal it in a ziplock baggie for the next time I need to use it to wipe down firearms and sometimes without having to spray more Ballistol each time. As to smell ... it grows on you.

Never have needed to worry about rust.I always have worn a t-shirt under regular shirt. No skin contact.i clean my mags every time I shoot . I use Breakfree CLP to lube mags and outside of guns
You should try Ballistol. ;)

This. Hands down the best corrosion preventer. They even make a heavier product for long term storage. This company's primary business is marine corrosion protection, like bridges, etc. They know what they are doing.

It doesn't take much and it's also a penetrant so don't use so much that it gets all over the ammo. Just rub down good and remove any excess with a dry cloth. Leave just a thin film, not wet.

Eezox.

My tacsport CZ mags like to rust if I am not careful.

This thread needs more cowbell!

And perhaps a poll.

I carry a plastic toy gun now, never had a problem with rust when I carried steel mags, nor even when I carried a blued steel revolver. With rust. Dust, on the other hand... Lawd a-mighty! Been makin' my own voo-doo dolls!

Back in my old gunsmith days we used ballistol exclusively. There might be better stuff out there, but every guy in the class used ballistol on every gun they worked on for customers and for their selves. I still use it every time i clean a gun and i keep a bottle in my range bag as well. A quick spray of that before shooting and guns just seem to run smoother. Good luck. Rust sucks!

I have never used oil on a magazine...and never experienced any rust either, even on my carry weapons. I must be missing something?

I wipe em down with my CLP/Hoppes oil/2-stroke synthetic oil soaked shop rag I keep in my cleaning ammo can. Seems to work but most of my mags are stainless so there's that.

You clean your mags every time you shoot? LOL wow
I developed that trait because my department requires us to clean our pistols when we do our in-service qualifications. The quartermaster says the mag is part of the gun and needs to be cleaned when the pistol is cleaned. I spray them down with CRC brakleen and wipe them down inside and out with a rag that has breakfree CLP on it. Only take a couple of minutes..Also Unlike many of you shoot weekly. I'm lucky if I get to the range 4 or 5 times a year now. When I was younger I went weekly

Wipe 'em down with a clean rag and then just a smidge of Ballistol or CLP on a rag.

This guy did some testing on a bunch of lubricants (46) for their rust prevention properties:

Top 3, no particular order:
  • WD40 Specialist (long term corrosion inhibitor, not standard)
  • Hornady's One Shot
  • Frog Lube
