Seeing the empty store shelves in Hong Kong has gotten me thinking I should do a little bit of prepping. Not that I expect coronavirus to be a huge problem in the US, but the fear could easily empty store shelves, and I'd rather not get caught short-handed - which has already happened with respect to N95 masks (sold out all over the planet).

So, what should I get if I expect a run on the stores as a response to coronavirus contagion fear? So far I've got:

-hand soap
-isopropyl alcohol
-hand santizer
-toilet paper
-bottled water
-canned food - I find most of this stuff barely edible, so I'll probably stick to stuff I find more palatable - sardines (yum!), tuna, chili, corned beef, etc. Open to suggestions here.
-simple dust masks - might be all that's available; I've got a half-face respirator with vapor cartridges if it comes to it
- cold and flu meds

What else should I add to the shopping list?

I just ate some hot chili that will flush out just about everything from my pores, intestines and bloodstream within 24hrs
So far we’ve had 3 family members in our home, a 1yr old for 3 days in my wife’s arms, with the flu AND another wicked virus. All three of my son’s families are down, two grandsons cannot walk for two days now, and THANKFULLY I’m unscathed to be able to care for my wife.
No one in the kitchen but me, we’re staying on opposite ends of the house, there’s a lot of garlic and habanero on all my food, as usual

I've only got one of left still in public school but every November we start the Vitamin C regimen - I take 2,000mg a day and eat alot of Citrus until it becomes Shitrus fruit. Seems to keep the cooties at bay.

For home stores not anything different than regular winter preps ... except more TP, cough medicine and single malt.

As for action ... I am steering even more clear of crowds than usual (grocery runs at odd hours), extended my 3 foot personal space to 6 feet, try to wash hands anytime I touch “common use” items or even if I just am walking by a sink, etc.

My wife has been using more Lysol antiseptic spray than normal (her Mother and Grandma bought that stuff by the case) also. She has always been OCD about wiping down the kitchen counters and such with Clorox so really not much more from her either.

Now my kid in high school ... there’s our weak link ... if it gets bad I’m thinking he’s going to be reassigned to the FROG since it has heat and a 1/2 bath to cut risk from his school exposure :D ... but seriously I think kids and the school environment might be the weak part of our prep.

I haven't made any special preps for it, but I'll remain cautious. Washing hands, avoiding people who appear ill. I try to avoid very crowded places during the winter, as well as places with lots of kids, because both have a higher chance of exposing you to germs.

Its been my experience that gun shows and conventions, where you have thousands of people under one roof, is the most likely place to catch something.

i bought a couple extra boxes of inspection gloves, I’ll use them anyway. Topped off the gas cans, again I’ll use it. An extra digital thermometer and topped off the battery box. 50 lbs of dog and cat food, for the animals.

nothing extreme.

Im not worried about it any more than Im worried about the flu.

I dont expect any rush on things here in the states unless there are MANY cases. Which I dont think will happen.
Lot of hubaloo for us Americans, preying on the scared in my opinion. Just get your normal stuff and wash your hands and such.

yes, i have extra disposable gloves along with the N95 masks.

how about a big bottle of Purell?
extra Vitamin C?
and, as always, more ammo.

No offense, but if you don't already have canned food, bottled water, alternative heat, a generator, a little bit of solar/crank lighting, you're behind the emergency curve. It helps to know your neighbors too.
Granted, i'm new to town so I'm not nearly as prepared as i'd like to be, but my wife is a bulk shopper and I'm a-ok with that. We've got a freezer full of food, camping stove, woods full of ... wood, etc.
I still don't think it's worth worrying about yet.

However, today my work sent out a company wide email about how they were going to send out a company wide email today containing a corona virus response action plan that must be implemented by Monday. I still hadn't gotten it by the time i left at 6...

I was cleaning the gutter in the rain yesterday during the storm and forgot to bring a jacket to work today. Now my nose feels funny and had a few sneezes. Then this thread reminded me about my stockpile. Currently sipping.

Bleach... good for so many things from mild, Ebola to kung flu

I think it's funny that they are sold out, we have so many boxes of n95 at work, I should just bring a bunch home.

I subscribe to the idea that drinking whiskey in the evenings helps to maintain an inhospitable environment for viral and bacterial invaders.

I’ll let you know how that continues to work...
i prefer to just offer an environment so inhospitable that infected/carriers don't want to come by and have the chance to infect me. sometimes alcohol is involved. sometimes pants are not.

I've cut out Chinese professional women for safety. Difficult, but doable until these folks turn to zombies and we can eradicate.
