For want of a custom deer rifle, here’s what I ended up with. It’s a great base that I can get just how I want it. I’m right handed, but a lefty rifle shooter. Left eye dominant. Go figure.

Picked this up used from another forum member.

Boise Gun Company built Remington 700 LH, 24” Douglas barrel, chambered in 30-06 Ackley Improved. HS precision stock.

The plan thus far:

(Done) Bolt send to Baldwin Bolt Jeweling for uhh, jeweling. Personal preference, jeweled bolts just look good.

(Done) Barreled action and bottom metal dropped off with @Magdump for some cerakote.

Optic:

(Done, ordered the DNZ) I like a low profile scope mount, and typically have used Leupold mounts, but I’m thinking a DNZ one piece would work well here. Any opinions?

Leupold VX3i 3.5-10x40 just waiting on it to arrive.

Trigger:

Still has the old recall trigger in it, older action, so it has to be on “fire” to work the bolt. Any recommendations on a replacement? Considering a classic Timney.

Anything I’m missing or haven’t considered?

What kind of stock is on there? Looks like an H.S Precision or Bell & Carlson. If so, does it not have a full aluminum bedding block or is it just pillar bedded?

I could be mistaken, and didn’t think to verify, that this one has pillars, I should probably just shoot it and see.

ETA: full aluminum bedding block.

For want of a custom deer rifle, and a general lack of the necessary funds, here’s what I ended up with. I’m right handed, but a lefty rifle shooter. Heavy barrel guns I prefer a right hand bolt, but for hunting guns I like a lefty.

I’d like to have the stock bedded at some point.

I really like the DNZ one piece mount on my rifle (TIkka T3X 30-06). I started with some Leupold two piece mounts, and wasn't happy with how the rings and bases swiveled to allow for rear windage adjustment.

Sell what you have and get a Howa in .270.

You’ll have all the accuracy ever needed and you won’t have to do anything to it.

Maybe...but they don’t make a lefty action unless I’m mistaken.

All my other deer guns are Rem or Browning in .270, no complaints with that caliber whatsoever.

And what’s the fun in an off the shelf gun?

Picked up the barreled action from @Magdump, and am most pleased! It looks like a new gun!

The bolt also made it’s way back from getting jeweled....sure is pretty! Guy I sent it to turned it around in less than a week, and it was less than $50 including return shipping, highly recommended!

You don’t have to spend extra money you don’t have.

ps ... Ruger American than, same price point.

Maybe he doesn’t like the Ruger, just like I don’t.

Maybe he has the money and doesn’t mind spending it on what he wants.

Maybe he doesn’t really care about your opinion either, but you just keep interjecting...

Just a thought...

Glad you filled me in. Hadn't been at this stuff very long.
He is the one that stated his lack of funds though.

Ah, I see now, I meant previous lack of “specified” funds for a pretty rifle. I’m good on funds so long as the wife don’t find out. I’m not in need of an entry level deer rifle at this point. No harm, no foul.

I’m a Rem. 700 fan (it was my first “real” rifle dad got me) which is why I chose the platform.

Everything has been ordered or is on it’s way other than a trigger. Still on the fence. I don’t need an 8oz target trigger for woods work, so I’m looking at 3-4lb triggers.

Timney is still the front runner, but I’ve also looked at Rifle Basix..... I also see that CMC makes a 700 trigger now too.

Just get the Timney and be done with it. You won't regret it.

I haven’t tried one but geissele makes a 700 trigger as well.

Btw that bolt looks sweet.

Just a quick update so I can keep all my ducks in row.

Still waiting on the Leupold to ship, ordered factory direct.

The DNZ mount was backordered, but I did find some lightweight Talley integral rings and bases.

Ended up with a Timney 518, straight trigger, gonna drop it in this week.

Get a Henry Lone Ranger (in .243 or .308) ... lever action (off the shelf) coolness with a x4 round box magazine; essentially ambidextrous; free floating barrel.

Scope finally got here! Was excited so I mocked it up in the Talley’s. Still haven’t slapped the trigger in yet. I need to tighten up or deer seasons gonna get here before I can get it done!

I almost wish I had gone with a higher magnification scope. Realistically though, where I’m hunting, shots are all 500 yards or less.

500 yards ... wow.

Mostly hunting open fields on the coast (Kinston/New Bern area) Dad’s got a couple farms that he tends that you can really stretch a rifle out. Farther than I’d feel confident making a decent shot.

Now up here, anywhere local to me in Lewisville, you could probably get away with irons. I’d love to try hunting the hills up here, but haven’t really found anything. Lots of family and private land, and I don’t want to put anyone out by asking.

Deer down there seem to be a bit smaller than the ones up here. I was fortunate enough to be able to take one with my little boy last year. Gave him the fever!

Minus the one I pulled...not a bad 5 shot group. 50 yards at the local indoor range. Fireformed a box of brass so I have enough to work up a load or two.
