An on-duty Huntersville officer at the Walmart heard the gunshots and was able to stop one of the people involved, according to police.

The shooting happened in the produce area of the store.

One person was placed into custody.

No further information has been released.

Anchor Liz Foster is on the scene. Return to this story and watch Eyewitness News at 11 p.m. for updates.

Statement from Walmart:

“We are deeply saddened by what has happened. We are thankful for the quick actions by the Huntersville Police Department and their arrest of those believed responsible for this crime. We are working closely with law enforcement. Since this is an active investigation, we will refer additional questions to them.”

People of Walmart... That's why I slide through the garden dept to automotive during slow hours for cheap oil and filters and dip out the same way... Nothing else worthwhile at wally world...

And that's one of the nicer WM's in the CLT area. Guess the Northlake nonsense decided to migrate a few miles up the road.

Pretty close to my house, but like BW, always carrying when I go there. Statistics say WM's are a crime magnet.

Preach it, brother

Every trip to Walmart should be a snatch n' grab. Get in, get what you need and get the hell outta there just as fast as possible.

Man. So much hatred for Walmart. The only store I don't go to is the skibo and yadkin road location.
Other than that, I'm fine with Walmart.

Which one of you knuckleheads got in an argument over bananna pudding in the produce section? Or did you squeeze the wrong melons?

I'm running about 98% for seeing someone open carrying at the Hickory Walmart in the past year. And I don't even go there much.

I think just about everyone carries at the Whiteville WM in Columbus County. A lot of open carries too. Overall a very polite place. :D But I agree, I believe a lot of Walmart's have become the new new urban "malls" and have their share of roaming predators fighting for territory and dominance.

We live about 5 miles away from that one. My wife thinks that one's the worst WM ever, won't go there. She instead travels up to Mooresville.

The goal is "we" are out by 11am. The WM people start to get up at 11am.

What's the old real estate saying??? Location, location, location.

I grew up in Boston. Used public transportation (subway trains, buses) all my life.
Some time in the 90's (IIRC) the MBTA suggested running mass transit to one of the affluent South Shore communities, Hingham I believe it was.
The Hingham towns folk were pissed and fought it tooth and nail.
They knew where mass transit went, the cockroaches came with it.

Groceries at Wal-Mart are at times half of what you pay elsewhere. Thomas English Muffins, $4.26 at Harris-Teeter, $2.26 at WM. Honey Bunches of Oats, $4.52 at Harris-Teeter, $2.65 at WM. For that kind of savings it's worth the risk. But now, WM has both grocery pickup and even delivery. You never have to go into the place. Just pull up outside and out come your groceries, and the nice man will put them right in your car for you. Or for $8.00, they will bring them right to your house and put them on your kitchen counter. Wal-Mart rocks.

Yeah, I have an odd love/hate relationship with walmart.

On one hand, where else can I get an oil change, tire rotation, ammunition, light bulbs, shampoo, deodorant, ibuprophen, Hello Kitty bandaids (don't judge, have daughters...and they rock...), new underwear, batteries, that toy for the third 8 year olds birthday party my kid has been invited to this month, laundry detergent, cat litter, dog food, Milk, cereal, potato chips, ice cream, bread, and snacks for the kids lunches all at the same place.

On the other hand...its Walmart.

I can flip a coin on which Wally to go to. Denver or Huntersville. Pretty much the same travel time. I generally go to Denver. It's a nicer ride anyway.

Unless I need some ammo or another can to put it in. The guy that runs the sporting goods in Huntersville generally does what he can to stay well stocked. Denver is hit or miss.

Either way, I go carrying. But I carry anywhere it's legal.

That used to be "my" WalMart. I'd have voted it as one of the cleanest and safest-feeling that I've ever been to. Although, I had bailed on any sort of produce from WalMart after finding an actual worm in an apple. It's like they buy from the abolsute bottom of the cargo ship that brings the fruit to us. So I'd have been ok--I could have continued checking out with my trail mix and bullets and been like nothing happened.

I have and always will support the underdog I may pay more although I'm not rich or wealthy I live by principals. Walmart has put many of the small hometown shops out of business this is the reason I hate Walmart.

Any news on the shooting, shooter or shootee?

Hmmm....

Right after the shooting, the store was locked down so officers could talk to witnesses and anyone who might be involved, Spruill said. Officers got contact information from store customers before allowing them to leave, he said.

This shouldn't be considered Huntersville Walmart.

This is ghetto Northlake area where the gang shooting at the mall was last year or so.

WSOC is trying to paint all their viewing area as nice when in reality it's ghetto

All while your taxes are being done, your wifes nails done and one kids eye exam and then you Mother in Laws hair doo didded.

What a great place..

Agree 100 percent. I've witnessed it myself in South West Charlotte. And, cockroaches is a good description. As soon as the doors open it looks like somebody flipped the light switch. Doesn't matter if the stop is in the middle of a four lane road, they is crossing the road. I've had to get on the brakes hard a few times. Now when it happens, I get their heart beating a little faster...

Do you blame them? LOL

When did Huntersville become Charlotte area? Won't be long before Hudson is a Charlotte suburb. Christ almighty...
When their borders touch? I'm about 7 houses into my neighborhood, and the centerline of the road you turn off of to come into my neighborhood is Charlotte on one side and Huntersville on the other.

Fairly certain that would be considered the Charlotte area. :p

I have never seen anyone in a blue Wal-Mart vest standing in front of a mom-and-pop IGA or whatever, blocking the door and keeping customers from going in. People go to WM because they choose to. Sam Walton opened a mom-and-pop in Bentonville, Arkansas, and with innovation and pricing, brought the nation's retail giants, Sears & JC Penny, to the brink of extinction. And now Amazon is giving it to Wal-Mart. And the winner every time is the consumer. Unless Wal-Mart is doing something illegal, I don't know what principle is violated by giving free people the choice of a wider selection and lower prices.

They aren't violating a principle and they aren't doing anything illegal or even unethical. I just don't like it. I prefer to support local businesses over mega-corps when I can. But I still have a Prime membership because reality is what it is.

Every grocer in my town left, except IGA. In fact, they got busier.

I have no actual point.

I heard one of the witnesses on the radio this morning, she said the "squat team" handcuffed a dude...........

Listen, hear that door alarm going off??? That's my ass leaving. You will not "allow" me to do a damned thing, I don't need your permission....
