When I read this the first thing to come to mind was Hyde County. Very rural, not many job opportunities, and lots of open, flat, land.

You'd think in a place where there's more prairie dogs than people per square mile that a shooting complex would consist of a port o john, some steel to ring, and some shaded concrete shooting platforms, then you could pocket 9.5 million.

Dude, it's a .gov project that's exactly what they have in mind, but with delays and cost overruns it'll be 2-3 times as much in the end
And still have portajohns.

I've been to a few state parks in MT and WY where the range complexes were very impressive. One park I visited and talked to the staff said their biggest money maker was shooting. They held matches every weekend for something; skeet, trap, IPSC, IDPA, PRS, BR, F class, plus black powder, cowboy action, and archery. Hundreds of competitors. Think of the $$ in hotels, restaurants, stores, etc. to support such a complex. Around here we spend millions on stupid ball fields and bike trails.

Hmm. Decisions decisions. Go down east and try to develop something or move to the Wyoming/Montana area to shoot and hunt. I will shortly have the ability to do either one. I did a week long hunt out in MT 20 yrs ago or so and we had to opportunity to hunt and shoot every North American animal known to man except moose. THe upland bird hunting was fantastic. Hunting muleys and pronghorn was more like shooting. It didnt take a lot of "hunting" for them. If I never get back it was truely memorable.

Maybe they've always have the portoJohn setup and they've finally be given funds for an actual shooting complex. Shooting in the dead of winter out west can get miserable.

I lived in Wyoming for three years back around 1978-81 and another year in Utah. One winter there would cure most folks of wanting to live there. All year there is a lot of wind. It is not unusual to have 40mph wind.View attachment 645890

The wind isn‘t bad by the fireplace.

Its unusual to have a calm day, start to think something big must be brewing

Yep. For a little while.

And they’ll close again for the month of August.

You can book free lanes right now. Give the page a few seconds to load.

Its my understanding there is no air conditioning, 100% outside air whether its hot or cold being pushed through as single pass system for ventilation only.

That’s where the $10m comes into play. You gotta relocate the prairie dogs and make sure their new homes are up to code, and of course pay each one a little something for the trouble.

What do we do about the holdouts? 55 or 62 grains?

Can't figure out why most are against this? I'm a big supporter of the shooting sports and if they are willing to use taxpayer money (with local support), it beats using it for some woke welfare/ trans/pedophile/groomer project. If someone would build a world class facility here in NC I think it would be fantastic. The NCWRC has built ranges (thanks to PR funds) and then turned them over to the local governments to run. Not a bad idea imo.

I'm not reading the comments that way. I guess it's just a matter that $10 million sounds like too little to build anything world class, and out there in the western boonies a person can shoot whatever they want, whenever they want without a facility...so it's ripe for comments.

I would not want to be in Wyoming, Montana, or the Dakotas in January or February. Nope.
Hunted WY opening day Oct 1 in 80 deg T shirt weather, 3 days later deadly blizzard with 3 ft snow. Killed off like 10K cattle between WY and SD. If we hadnt driven 600 miles all night we would have been stranded in Rapid City for 3 days til the airport reopened.

I almost took a free hunting trip to Kansas with some friends of a friend. I think they left Friday after Thanksgiving a few years ago. I think theyre still stuck in the snow. 50 or 100 yr blizzard hit when they got there. They left a 4 wh drive Suburban where it got stuck and came back after the thaw.
