What is your accuracy expectation of your AR at 100 yards? Specifically talking about .223. I'm trying to figure out if I suck, or if I'm just expecting too much of this platform.

The gun in question is an 18" 1/8 SPR type rifle with plenty of magnification.

Good ammo? Good rest? Good trigger? If yes to all of these I would think 1 moa Or better. Especially with a good scope and not a red dot

Various types of the heavier ammo from Hornady and some SMK from Gorilla. Also working with some hand loads as well. Shooting off a bipod and rear bag, but on a 6ft plastic table. Trigger is a Geissele NPM set relatively light. Using an Athlon scope.

What’s the specs on rifle? What kind of groups are you getting? Do you have the scope turned to highest magnification?

What level of accuracy are you achieving now with this set up?

That's what I was thinking as well. Sometimes I can get below 1 MOA, even some around .625, but it's not inconsistent. I'm just trying to pin point the problem.

1) my lack of skill (less than 6 months of rifle shooting experience)
2) the rifle which is also a new build with around 300-400 rounds through it. Built with what I would consider high quality parts. Ballistic Advantage, Geissele, Fail Zero, Aero Precision, etc.
3) my hand loads. I'm also brand new to loading rifle ammunition. I mean brand new! I've loaded pistol for years successfully but the rifle loading is a new endeavor for me.

There seem to be too many "new" things to be able to eliminate any of the variables right now. What would you all suggest? I have a class coming up later this month that should help but I was hoping to nail down a decent and repeatable load prior to the class.

Maybe the table is affecting it, since they, typically, move around a bit/not super sturdy

This is really good ammo for the $$ should serve you well if you don’t mind shooting steel. If you don’t like steel try the heavy stuff from black hills that are on outdoor limited dot com. I find I shoot better groups with the scope on about half the rated power. It takes some of the visible sway out of things for me.

5rds, 100yds, 16" Rainier UM, 1:7.7 twist. Hornady ELD-M.

I get similar groups with 77gr Sierra Tipped Match Kings

If it's "all over the place", then look for systemic stuff:

- scope base. Torqued properly? At the rail and the rings.
- if the rifle is a "build"....is there a bunch of schmutz around the gas block? Indicating excessive gas leakage and therefore inconsistent pressure
- is the barrel nut properly torqued? It may have been at build, but is it still? Actual torque reading isn't critical, but ensure it's still tight.
- front rail...touching the barrel or gas system? Again, is it torqued properly?
- is it overgassed?
- take OFF the muzzle device for a couple rounds.
- are you resting on the barrel or handguard?

- swap optics to ensure the Scope isn't broken
Etc.

#2 doesn't matter. None of those affect accuracy (except barrel). #1 definitely does.

With a BA SPR barrel and good ammo you should be sub-MOA.

Might have missed in above but what bbl twist? 7 twist with 77g SMK's and a good handload should be able to put 5 shots inside 1" square. 55 and 62 grain bullets running 2900fps will shoot inside an inch. 22.5grs BM under a 77smk works real well too.

Does over-gassing a rifle affect it's precision?

What kind of trigger? With some of the factory AR triggers ive shot....... No way i could shoot good groups. However...... I do much better with a Gissele hi speed national match trigger.......@ 2.25 lbs.

The above group is isnt bad by any means. I'd claim it....

I have the HSNM trigger as well.

My precision load was 24gr Varnet under 77gr SMK. I never got around to trying the 69gr.

Google the AeroE Accuracy Load for something that's supposed to be universally accurate. You can work up to this:

Case trimmed to 1.750
Rem 7 1/2
27.0 grs Re-15
Sierra 52 gr SMK
OAL 2.250
NO crimp

That is THE max load for that bullet and it’s compressed.

Did you work up to that? No other charges showed promise?

I think 25.5gr is a standard go-to; I also hit great accuracy but slightly slower velocity with 24.1gr

Yes, I tried 25gr and 25.5gr. 25.5 wasn't bad but not as good. Velocity was about 25fps slower with 25.5 and the SD averaged 22.5 as compared to 13.4 SD with the 26gr.

Sierra's reloading manual actually shows 26.1 as max load, but it's loading a little longer than I am. I don't plan to go any higher for sure. Think I'm safe to maintain the 26gr?

I go by the powder manufacturer, generally. Not right or wrong, just follow the people who’s stuff what goes boom.

You tried half grain increments? Might need to try smaller ones than that; there’s a lot of potential with that bullet and powder. It’s amazing when you hit a sweet spot that works and the groups just tighten up so drastically

Bet you’d get better groups if ya wasn’t skered a bugs.

Not necessarily the rifle, more the shooter. Too much muzzle rise makes you have to reset for each shot. For someone new to a platform that could mean inconsistent grip/hold, etc.

Not necessarily afraid, but a second look can help

Nothing opens up groups like having a scorpion get into your pant leg.

I have had good luck with Hornady 75gr HPBT ammo. Both steel cased and the brass cased. When I do my part I can get 4 holes touching at 100yds but that's because I need more practice! Lol

Keep it up! More trigger time and you will be dropping nats at 500yds ;) just like in the moives!!
