May have gotten another itch. Interested in a double stack .9mm 1911/2011. After reading the thread about possible prodigy issues Im a little skeptical on that one. Any recommendations, not necessarily looking for a race gun, and I like the 4.25 idea for carry.

You planning to put an optic on it? If not, I might know of a Staccato that’s not milled for an optic.

Purely anecdotal, but another guy in my squad ran a 5” Prodigy without issue. And ran it PDQ.

Another guy was running a Staccato that choked bad on one stage. With stovepipes and doublefeeds. I attributed it to reloads and running it too dry.

I went i to FGG and fondled the Prodigy as well. They had the 5” in the case listed for 100 less then the 4.25, accidentally I believe because he brought that one to back and didn’t bring it back out. The first responder discount takes a little off the price but I still left it there. Mag catch was a pain in the ass to lock the slide back but that’s not something I’m planning on having to much so I don’t think it’s a show stopper. I’m going to sleep on it before impulse buy one, but I did like the feel of it.

The slide stop is terrible. Some people like it, but Hilton Yam at 10-8 Performance doesn’t, and his gen 2 slide stop looks like the stock one but has a better ledge and works great.

If you ever bring your large carcass back to a match you can handle mine.

Just when I think I have have the time to start investing back into shooting, one of my kids makes a new sports team. I will get back though.

I can see having a lot of trouble locking the slide back with the mag-catch! 😂 😅

(I know what you meant to write, just couldn’t resist the laugh)

I‘m not concerned with locking the slide back. You have all the time in the world to do that. I’m more concerned with rapidly releasing the slide after a reload.
Yeah tough locking a slide with the mag release, maybe that was the problem.

I do not put too much stock in most “range” reviews- everyone is quick to blame the gun - but you do not know what “upgrades” the user may have done, at home, on his kitchen table .
You do not know a thing about the ammo - is it quality ammo? Reloads ?
Was it reasonably clean and lubed ?

True, but with the Prodigy there were lots of reviews by reputable shooters who had issues with the gun not feeding reliably. So much so that it put @fieldgrade on notice - and he is a skeptic when it comes to 1911/2011 guns in 9mm anyway. As soon as his had issues, he called Springfield and sent it back. As he said (and I shot in his squad), it ran like a Singer last Saturday. And he shot it very well.

For IDPA competitions, at least under the CURRENT rules (subject to change without notice), there is no real advantage in shooting a 1911DS/2011 over a single stack 1911. They are both ESP guns limited to 10 rounds. Now some will argue that 10 rounds in a single stack 9mm 1911 mag will cause issues when the first loading is 10+1, or even on the reloads with 10 rounds in mags that you have to bear down on to load the 10th round. And you don't have to use a Barney Mag for the 10+1 with the DS guns.

We shoot at Buccaneer with some folks who have very expensive 1911s that they download to 9 rounds because the 10th round causes reliability issues. And I'm talking about the $5,000-$6,000 guns some folks are so fond of.

For range, plinking and defense guns, those extra rounds are nice to have.

For defense, I'm sticking with my P320s with 21-rd mags. I even keep them downloaded to 20 because the last round is too tight. Now I just hope my P320 doesn't go off on its own and shoot me.

Oh, and the OP stated he liked the 4.25 size for carry, so keep that in mind when reading my post. I buy guns mainly aimed at IDPA use.

I was making a general statement about reviews as a whole - not necessarily just the prodigy. I shoot a lot competitive events and RO matches every week

Actually I know everything you posted a question mark about. I was the SO, I knew the guns, and I know exactly what ammo choked the Staccato.

As I stated, it was anecdotal, my experience, nothing more, nothing less.

I have no experience with the Prodigy, but do have 3 Staccatos, c, c2 and p. They all have been great, but the c2 (3.9" barrel) is my favorite. Easy to carry and very accurate.

I've handled the Georgia manufactured Masterpiece Arms DS9 Hybrid at a local store along side a few Staccatos. The DS9 is a competition gun and felt like butter. Everything was tight, smooth, and the trigger was one of the nicest I've ever had the pleasure of operating. The Staccatos were very nice as well, but more set up for duty edc and not quite as tight and smooth.
I recently bought a BUL Armory TAC II UL 3.25". It is on par with the Staccato IMHO. Some people will be turned off by the fact it does use some MIM parts, but everyone who has held/shot it has been extremely impressed. Very light but nowhere near as snappy as one would expect.along with the new Staccato CS, it's a perfect little 2011 style edc. The price is easier to digest as well.

The only one I've ever owned (keeping with my bottom feeder value minded mindset) is the RIA double stack 10mm. It was super accurate, perfectly reliable even with 40S&W, and fit my big paws better than a typical 1911. Not hard on the eyes either.
