Do 1911s (Sigs and S&Ws) with external extractors, have a more consistent brass landing place, than 1911s with the "normal" internal extractor? It seems that clocking would be eliminated with the external extractor.

It seems that clocking would be eliminated with the external extractor.

If everything is within spec, the internal extractor won't clock...not even with an average, ordnance fit of the firing pin stop.

The move to external extractors by S&W and Sig is an unnecessary modification to correct a problem that doesn't exist in a 1911 pistol built to spec...or maybe a better way to put it is that it's a quickie band-aid fix for manufactuers who can't seem to keep to the print specs during the manufacturing process.

And, despite the successful implemtation of external extractors for decades, they can't seem to get their act together with the 1911s.

Stick to the specs on the slide and the extractor, and the issue of clocking will vanish.

Thanks for the reply. I have a ton of respect for your opinions.

Thanks for the vote of confidence...but that wasn't an opinion.

There are two reasons that an extractor will clock. An excessive amount of the tensioning wall in the breech area, and too much slop in the firing pin stop to stop slot fit. While the cklearances with an ordnance spec stop are pretty generous, that won't allow an extractor to rotate far enough to cause a problem. It has to either be really loose, or the extractor channel has to be bored so far to the right that the edge of the stop can't contact it until it;s gone too far.

The other problem is the tensioning wall. If too much of it protrudes in the way of the cartridge rim sliding up on the breechface, it will contact the bottom corner of the wall and place a rotational force on the extractor. If the amount of wall showing is within spec, it won't do that...even with a sloppy stop fit.
