Literally caught on fire yesterday. Didn't damage anything except my underwear. Got the fire put out. Leaked transmission fluid on the hot exhaust. Is this repair gonna cost me a fortune?
The culprit:

Steady drip, and of course it's right over the exhaust. Fluid still red, doesn't need adding yet either. Grrr. And it still has a slight drip when cold, so it's gonna have to be replaced. Plus it keeps motorists from passing me screaming " your truck is on fire"

I'm happy your truck didn't burn to the ground. It's a common story unfortunately.

The answer to your question about the cost depends on the underlying cause of the leak. There are many variables that could be at work here. Problems with the torque converter hub, problems with the input shaft, problems with the drivetrain, simply a worn out front transmission seal, etc.......

Take it in and have the issue diagnosed by a professional.

Could be a number of things causing the leak. Most likely it's a torque converter seal. Commonly referred to as a front seal. It could be a front pump seal and/or front pump gasket, bushings in the pump, although not likely as this would affect fluid pressures therefore you would be experiencing some shifting problems. Some of those fords have a plug in the converter to drain the fluid, check and make sure it's not leaking also if you have it. Square headed plug if I remember correctly. But most likely it's the seal for the converter. Transmission will have to be removed, converter pulled, seal replaced and transmission reinstalled. Year make model 2 or 4wd?

How many miles on the truck? One option if it needs teardown is a Ford factory remanufactured transmission. 3yr unlimited mileage warranty.
I put them in my 99 taurus and sable.

Since you will have it out I'd look into a BTS trans. I put one in my 2002 f250 7.3. That trans turned 750k and still pulling strong when I sold it. If yours is a gassed he is still the place to get one. Not as built as a diesel trans. But WELL worth it if you plan to keep the truck.

2004 V10 gas. 4X4. 128,000 on the clock. very clean truck.

I called Winebarger Ford in Elkin, $1K ish depending if it needed the TC replaced or not. Local transmission shop said $450 if its just the seal, have it done by Friday. Im sure when they get into it it will need a total rebuild, blah blah blah. Kidding. (I hope) I will advise what I hear by the end of the week...

Given what trucks go for these days, even 10yr young ones, new transmission well worth it.
I'm swapping one out of my 99 taurus wagon next week (myself), 300K on it now, going to hit 500K that is my goal.
Wife thinks I am nuts. The unit in the car now had a problem six months after I put it in,
covered by Ford warranty, $1,800 bill and I paid zero six years ago.

I think that is the 4R100 trans, it's the same as an E4OD just improved a little. I've seen built e4ODs for sale it might be worth looking into. I can't believe your having trouble with so few miles on it.
