2004 Toyota Sequoia

That generation of Tundra and Sequoia had a bad frame rust problem. Toyota replaced a lot of frames for free (!). Check that for sure.

I checked all around and under it. It's very clean. I didn't see any rust.

The 2uz-FE 4.7L is one of the best motors that Toyota made. Very few issues.

Toyota recommendation for the timing belt is every 90k.

Frame rust on the Sequoia is less common than the Tundra, which isn’t common in the region of NC where I work. The frames we’ve done on Tundras have not been NC trucks. They’ve spent the majority of their life in WV or PA.

Happy with my 02 Tundra, same 4.7 V8, just not the best in terms of fuel economy. Check the manual regarding rear diff maintenance / lube and it sucks to repair the starter since it sits under the intake manifold.

I like to think I'm reasonably capable of doing most of my small auto repairs, but I was beaten by the starter on my 95 Tacoma with the 3.4L V6.

I finally took it to a mechanic friend of mine that swore if it came back to him ever again, he'll close shop. Lol.

Same with the later Sequoias. Wife has a 2011 I think and the starter went out. Dealer quote was $1600 for replacement. It’s in a terrible spot. Independent did it for $750 and after YouTubing it, I think it was a bargain. Mechanics wife has around the same year sequoia and he said their starter went out a couple weeks after I took my wife’s in.

i have a 2003 sr5 4x4 with 232k on it...its a great rig. better mileage than my landcruiser. bolo timing belt every 90k, water pump with it. radiator (so easy) around 200k, belt tensioner @230k , haven't need a started yet, sure the manifold is in the way but it should not be too bad, lots of room to work on these.

The starter is easy to work on it's just that you must pull the intake to get to it since it sits on top of the block. $10 in parts to replace the contacts inside the starter and $70 worth of intake gaskets! The fact that the manifold has to be removed and they will only replace not rebuild a starter is why the dealer quotes big money on this job.

Like foopid stucker said there is plenty of room in the engine bay so most work is easy. Radiator replacement was stupid simple compared to my E39 BMW, the Toyota OEM radiator went 16 years and 164K miles. Use only OEM / Asian spec coolant.

Outside of warping front brake calipers the only failure I've had was self-induced. I had to replace a rear axle seal because they are not compatible with synthetic gear lubes. By 2004 things might be different but check before going synthetic in the diffs.

I had to remove the front, passenger side tire to get to mine. Then, they decided to put the frame in the way.

Had a 2001 Sequoia, just recently got rid of her. Very dependable. The engine/trans were bullet proof- just change the timing belt....never had any major issues.
The thing that terrorized me the most were door latches and rear hatch. PITA cheap plastic!
