Not sure if this is a lifter or a connecting rod. Mechanic says lifter, but I am not so sure.
I love this truck and it has been absolutely trouble free for over 80k miles, so I am interested in rebuilding the top and bottom of the engine. Anyone here do this type of work and what would it cost me to completely rebuild this engine?

At 80k it is more than likely a lifter. I have used Porters Automotive for years in High Point. They are honest. It might be a simple fix rather than a full rebuild.

A lower end knock will have a lower pitch sound.....more of a thud that a ticking sound. Lifer noise is common.....

I have heard both of them many times over the years, but I have Flowmaster 10s on the truck and with the exhaust noise it is hard to determine. I will check with Porters, see what they say

Edit: The truck actually has 112k on it, I bought it at roughly 30k.

Drain your oil and look for metal. If you have the means, cut open the filter (without making shavings) and do the same. Brass/gold/copper colored flakes are from bearings. Heat discolored steel or silver flakes would probably be from a failed lifter/cam damage.

Cam phasers were a fairly common issue with that engine.

Yep it's overhead cam.....I got $ on the variable cam timmers....or phasers as @JohnnyTyler said. Not a bad job if you know how to lock the timing chain in place....saves you from having to take the front cover off.

The phasers are a well known problem and as mike79 said an incredibly easy fix, but I don’t think anyone would mistake that rattle for a knock.

I'm gonna try to get a recording of the knocking to post it, the exhaust is loud but maybe you guys can make something out of it. I just bought a new to me truck yesterday, so I have plenty of time to fix the other one.
