2017 Turkey Season Pics

I hope it's not like last year or I'm just going to post a picture of the woods!

Have a picture of a nice hen who hung out with me for about 30 mins. Never could get the gobbler to commit. Oh well, trying again in the morning before work, so hopefully will have a picture to post.

Finally a turkey pic for this season. Drizzling yesterday afternoon, so I went and sat in a ground blind on a field edge. Called for a while and was getting ready to pack it in when I heard him go into strut. He came in totally silent and never gobbled. Was strutting just on the backside of a little rise in the field, so all I could see were tail feathers and his head when he would look for the hen he heard calling. Did some purrs away from him, trying to get him to come over the rise. He kept strutting back and forth, same place about 60 yards. Finally he came around the end of the little rise which brought him in closer and next time he came out of strut and looked for the hen, I had the gun on him. Farther than I like, but ranged it later at 46 yards. Still the load of 3.5 inch #5s ate his head and neck up. 11 inch beard and 1 1/4 inch spurs.

I had one hanging at 60 yards yesterday afternoon in the misting rain. Instead of coming closer he flew into roost. I'm sure I could have got him with a long beard 3.5" #5, but didn't want to take a chance. I'll try again next week.

ill be heading out tomorrow about 4am to my land and setup the blind, wish me luck. hopefully ill have some pics to post

I used to always used #6s till I finally patterned this 870 with a ventilator choke. Copper plated 5s, does not seem to matter the brand, will put 70-90 pellets in the head and neck at 40 yard. #6s will drop the pattern density down to 30 to 40 pellets. Does not make sense since more 6s in a payload, but have verified it several times on the pattern board. Of course the ventilator choke is a .655 constriction (which is why I believe they stopped making it). With that tight a pattern, have to seriously aim when the bird is up close. Only use the 870 for turkeys and slug hunting, so installed a set of Williams Fire sights for my old eyes. They are great!

Only had one shot at turkey season this year, no bird but i cant complain about a day laying on the ground sun the sun on a beautiful day.
the morning started out promising but then a stupid yote deciding to start howling about an hour after sun up. we tried to call him out with a wounded rabbit but he was a no show.

after a couple hours we moved spots and tried again but no luck, we thing the ground was not flat enough to get them out.

anyway here some pics.
