2018 Catawba Valley Rifle & Pistol Club .22 Tactical Steel Challenge Match 2 June 9th!

Out of curiosity, what is the highest anyone has posted up so far (score wise)? I couldn't imagine many getting the bonus target/points at 290...

Also, what is the usual or typical score it takes to win; or is it pretty "match dependent"?

When we used to shoot this in the past we would only do 4 stages.. so 72 max. We saw a few scores in the 60's and many in the 50's on hot and humid days. The mean score would average around 42.

The top score yesterday was a 46. That would not have held up in past years even with only 4 stages. The wind was truly the factor yesterday depressing everyone's score.

The June and August Matches have the highest scores because 22LR loves heat and humidity with no wind. IT is amazing what any decent 22LR rifle will do in those conditions.

In 2017 we started doing 5 stages and we saw one shooter reach a 70; a few in the 60's, a few in the 50's and most in the 40's.

To your questions:
1. I believe that the average score is match dependent on weather conditions AND stage barricades. There is no rhyme or reason for what barricades we put out for a match... it is, "Hey, we haven't done that one in a while" or "this is pretty tough.. let's have a prone to let folks catch their breath"

2. I tapped an Aggressor at 290 yesterday, but only because I had to catch up a bit. I had a period of no wind and it made sense. There have been times in good conditions the bonuses are cleared at 290. (If you think about the angle of the bullet entering the target box, there is more room for error than you think.)

3. If you shoot a Mid 50's in this match.. you have a good chance of placing and/or winning.

I will try to look at the scores from 2017 and get some averages and winning numbers. One thing I can clearly state: Our shooters' scores have increased over the years even as we have added more difficult stages; and that is good as shooters are becoming better marksmen. That is the whole key.

In my opinion, yesterday was the toughest TSC match we ever shot. (Mostly due to the wind)

Thanks for the detailed response. I was curious of the typical strategies with the different point systems (options). If there was a "target" score top shooters was looking/aiming for in the back of their mind; or if they just -decide on the fly- as confidence builds/diminishes from each stage position... With the option of staying safe going for all the free standers first (building a base score) then going for anything better after 1ptrs are down or just hitting a couple free standers then concentrating on the high value targets (with possibility of score going down with "-1 hostage"); it really ads to the -GAME-. The 22TSC is a very neat format.

You hit the nail on the head. Saturday with the wind, everyone was shooting to hit the 6 single men to make sure they banked those points. Due to the wind, at longer distances, it took about 1.4 shots to hit on average.

Generally, most of us employ the strategy of taking the first 4 single men to see if you POA=POI. If you are really on.. then we transition to the Aggressors (2 Points)... hit 4 of those and you have 2 shots left for the Bonuses. A few stages are usually cleared in a match with an 18. (With the right conditions... )

It is a strategy game for sure. And the good thing, is since we are a square range you can get an idea of how the scoring is going. Just walk up and down the line between stages and ask folks how they shooting... ain't no secrets and it just adds to the fun!

Congrats to Steve for the win with new toy this past Sat! Great Shooting.

I take it he got a Vuddoo? I got to shoot one the other week. They are quite nice. :D

Greg other than Stage 4 you had a really strong match yourself, well done!

It is still the most challenging rimfire match in the country, hands down.

It is a very challenging match, but uttermost fun. Really like the "strategy" option/game.

Yes, the Vudoo was in action. He let a few of us rub on it after the match. VERY nice! As you can see by the scores, it shot really well too. I feel pretty sure if he had had some competition at the end, his Stage 5 score would have been higher. I have a funny feeling he was just playing it safe (again strategy).

Thanks for the comment but yeah, I flopped on the Roof. Never got set up well & took way too much time; didn't even get my last two shots off there. You would have thought I'd learned my lesson since I lost a shot at the tank trap also, but sometimes I'm a slow learner .

I tell you, after looking at the scores Bryan had a really awesome match other than the 2x4 (Stage 2). He cleaned the Roof! (And he was high score on tank trap). Guess I just got lucky to get a little better score than he at Stage 5. Sure glad they didn't take the shoot-off to the roof :):)

I am glad you guys posted something, as I did not get a chance to think about following up here. Here is the link to the scores by stage and final position in Practiscore:

Here is Steve with his VooDoo... (that gun will shoooot!) - He only shot this a few shots once he built it to make sure it worked. Saturday was the first full day of shooting that rig.

The scores were high... good bunch of shooters. 22LR's like High Temp and High Humidity:

First Place: Steve Roe with a 65!
Second Place: Greg Myrick with a 63+12 Shootout Tie Break
Third Place: Bryan Johnson with a 63+8 Shootout Tie Break
Fourth: Jim Roe with a 58!
Fifth: Chris Brown with a 57

Yeah, I was spotting him on Stage 4... he was dead on drilling center man on the first two singles. Then he cleaned the 4 Aggressors with Head Shots. Then he cleaned the 2 Bonus Aggressors, again with Head Shots. Finished up 2 more Singles... Clean stage.

The 112 Stage, which we used the 45 degree 2x4, is always a tough one to clean. I don't know if it is the size of the targets, the placement, or if the wind really becomes a variable.

Using Practiscore and Stage Scores, we are hoping to get some good stat data.

Not too much longer until the next match. Looking forward to it.

I heard from a little birdy that the ranges (or at least the last one) may be different this time... Any solid word?

Fun match yesterday. New yardage was 240 and match went WAY quicker with new format without sacrificing any positives... The new racks worked great (I actually liked the animal shapes too). Stages were fun and challenging, don't think anybody ran a stage (from what I heard) but know there was at least a few of 16s & 17s on the "typical" stages. Believe 9 was high on the chickens and 8 was high on 240yd pigs (the 10pt stages).

IIRC Steve whipped everyone again with a 62. Ronnie Hare strong 2nd with a 61. Chris Brown 58, Greg Myrick 57 (stage 3 was a dagger; lost more there than all 4 other stages combined), and if I'm not mistaken Jim Roe with a 51 rounded top 5.

It was a fun match and really did run smooth with new format. I also had a very hard time on stage 3, but I have a hard time on most stages! Thanks for a great match!20180811_112737.jpg 20180811_112748.jpg 20180811_112724.jpg 20180811_112718.jpg

My spot will be open as I have to work. I hate to miss out, because I really enjoy this match and the great people.
