Have you ever driven a GTR? I ask because it's an unbelievably capable machine (even without considering what's possible with mods), but it is the complete opposite of a GT4. What the GT4 has in spades, and the GTR completely lacks, is FEEL. You drive the GTR and you say to yourself "holy hell this is fast and handles on rails!" and then you look past the nissan titan-esque gauge layout and you start to realize that the car is only fun at WOT or ridiculous cornering speed because you feel NOTHING. It is numb, horribly numb. It feels like you make suggestions to the car and it determines the best way to achieve that, which leaves you wanting. There's no reward for driving that car, aside from the amazement of what it can do. You attempt to fill that hole with more and more speed, but it's not a rewarding experience IMO. It also sound as bland as it feels. That car is silly quiet in stock form. It's a big 'meh' for me. I drove a 997 turbo back to back with the GTR and it was leagues more rewarding to drive.
Full disclosure, I am a huge GT4 fan. I came very close to purchasing a 981 GT4 last year, but couldn't make a deal happen with a dealer for a few thousand. I ended up with the bigger brother Pcar (GT3RS), but I absolutely loved, and still lust for a GT4. I was hoping that 718 GT4's at MSRP would have driven down 2016 prices, but that doesn't seem to have happened.
I went into driving the GT4 thinking that it would be a good substitute and more affordable alternative to my true lust, which was a GT3. I left driving the GT4 with the impression that it was a remarkable car. I wanted it, badly. It wasn't a substitute for anything, it was perfect. The balance, the feedback, the steering weight, the clutch pedal weight, the pedal placement, the shifter (god, it's good and I'm a former S2000 transmission snob), the throttle response, those lightweight CF buckets (a pricey option, but worth it IMO), etc. The power was enough to have fun, but not so much that you couldn't actually drive the car on the street and extract what it has to offer in the twisties. Yes, the gearing is always complained about, and yes, it sucks. It's too tall, but it's not a deal breaker. You need to drive one. You will love it. I know I did.
A GT4 as a stablemate to this guy is the dream...
