I’ve been shooting and reloading for 224 Valkyrie for a few months now and thought I’d start an ongoing thread about powder and bullet combos that I’ve tried, want to try, what worked, what failed, etc

So far I’ve tried:

Powder:
RE15
Varget
CFE223
H4895 (loaded but will shoot soon)

Bullets:
69gr TMK
77gr TMK
75gr ELD
80gr ELD
88gr ELD (factory load)
90gr SMK (loaded but untested)

I’ve had some great results with RE15 and Varget with both 75 & 80 ELDs but I’ve heard H4895 and 80ELD is THE combo for speed and precision.

I want to try:
2000-MR
78gr Barnes TSX (hunting)

So far I’ve only doped 75 and 80gr ELDs out to 300yds. 77gr TMK shot really well but given the cost, I’d like to save them and use ELDs.

Using my 100yd zero, my 80gr ELD was a 4.5MOA adjustment to 300, and the 75ELD was only 4.25. Very close!

I’ve got some velocity figures written down and pictures of groups to post later but I wanted to get this started and keep it going

I’ve been primarily using Federal brass but will be switching to Starline soon. I’m seeing good case life, both necks and primer pockets.

Most brass is on 6-8 firings; had some necks fail with hot loads but the primer pockets are holding up but probably won’t make it to 10 loadings.

I will start annealing, I just wanted to see how far I could push things with no other work done to the brass.

Pleased with the 90SMK and H4895 results. Found the node right off the bat; had to stop during my first shot group and open my gas up. I was shooting unsuppressed to make sure the 90SMKs would stabilize in my 1:7.5 barrel before I ran it suppressed. They stabilized AND did well

23.0, .2, & .4 shot well, and I’ll test again at 2.29” (probably 22.9, 23.1, and 23.3gr) but opened up at 23.6gr to about 1.25” and even more at 23.8 (2”).

I want to try H4895 with my 80ELDs!

Bummed I missed shooting with you this morning! Happy to hear it is going well.

Good to hear.

I have been contemplating getting a 224V setup. I have pretty much standardized my 223 loads with the Hornady 75bthp since I get good enough accuracy for me (usually around 0.75 moa) with a relatively cheap bullet. I'd be curious to know how those bullets would work in 224V.

Throw some H4895, CFE223, Varget, or RE15 behind it and you’ll be putting out a few hundred extra fps over 223 Rem

I've got 3 of those, but I've had the best luck with 8208xbr in my 223.

I didn’t have good results with 8208 using “heavy” bullets in 223, or in 224 Valkyrie with faster moving loads. If you were closer, I’d give you pretty much a full pound bottle that I only loaded a dozen or so rounds from.
