224 Valkyrie

I think 6.5 Grendel or 6mm ARC may have overtaken that niche.

Definitely still going, and was actually one of the few calibers you could always find on the shelf during this shortage.

I remember seeing one lonely ar on the shelf at academy when everything else was totally wiped out. I asked the guy behind the counter what was up with it and he said "even in a pandemic nobody wants a .224.

.224 was literally the only ammo they had on the shelf. They had several boxes of it.

So I went back and said "dude you even have ammo for that thing!"

He chuckled and said he hadn't realized that. It was the only gun in th store at the time that you could purchase along with correct ammunition.

Soooo... Good pandemic option???

I’ve had 6.5g, and just looking at some options for a different caliber in the AR15 COAL size to play with. 224v is a thought. I’ve been considering something I could use with a bolt action and AR with more umph over 223. I’ve got the 300blk AR and Ruger Ranch 300blk, I have an 223 AR but not a 223 bolt action yet, and have a lower with out an upper right now, and was looking at the 224v to fill that spot and possibly getting a bolt action to match with it.

Had one. Seemed cool but didn’t perform well on deer, my .223 did much better. .224 suppressed well oddly enough.

I have one that Compass Lake put together for me. I suggest a slow twist and a long barrel. Mine sparks steel out past 1,000 yards. I can hear hits that a .223 77gr or 80gr will hit and you don’t hear any noise from the impact.

Just from an off the shelf ammo availably standpoint, it’s hard not to go .224 Valkyrie. The ammo is all over the place and the prices on it didn’t get crazy for some reason. Grendel and ARC are stupid with the cost of factory ammo right now.

I'm still looking it over. Trying to decide on it still.

So….

Build or buy….

PSA is under 500 delivered, but I’ve never assembled an upper before, and thinking hard about it.

With the problems get reloading supplies, I would not buy anything that is not NATO used. Try finding any 6.5 Creedmmor or Grendel ammo. Even 45-70 ammo. Now with the governrment going with the 6.8 round, guess who is getting all the primiers in the future? I would not buy any new caliber that I do not have supplies for to reload. It took forever to get bullets for the 6.5 Grendel and after looking for 6 months, I just found brass for the Grendel. I have been collecting brass at the range for over 3 years and might have picked up 3 dozen 224 cases. I think that people that shoot the 224 or even the 6.5 Grendel reload and they collect their brass.

And it’s sitting on shelves locally to me. 500 rounds would probably last me a few years at the rate I shoot.

Ordered the PSA 20” 1:6.5 twist upper. Kept going between building and buying, figured this was the simplest way to get into this round.

My buddy built a .224 Valkyrie and we both enjoyed shooting it but we quickly realized that it didn’t offer anything that other, proven calibers couldn’t do, if you’re looking for something to target shoot out to 1k that isn’t mainstream, the Valkyrie will definitely scratch the itch, but other calibers can do it cheaper.

85 cent a round, that’s pretty cheap…. and it’s plentiful right now.

Upper ordered, magazines ordered, Dead Air KeyMo muzzle ordered, picking up ammo today.

Next to start gathering reloaded equipment for it

Upper has shipped finally. So once it gets here, I’ll get the scope mounted and leveled. Got 100 rounds ready to break in and test with. Next step will be getting reloading set up for 224.

I really like 224 Valkyrie. I got to the point where I wasn’t shooting it at all so I sold my setup but it was very accurate….once I found the loads it liked. Was the most difficult caliber I’ve ever load tested for however. Very small changes made huge differences, not as forgiving as 223 and 308 for example

80 and 88gr ELDs sure hit steel at 1000 harder than a 77gr .223.

I still wouldn’t mind building a 24-26” bolt gun for 90gr SMKs

That’s kinda where I am at, this is to get me started with the 224, but would like to do a bolt action one day, light recoiling gun I can get my daughter to shoot one day.

I would not go PSA, I bought one, early on, and the QC was terrible.
The gas block was hitting the handguard with predictable results.
I sent it back, and they returned it with a note saying that they fired 10 rounds, and it cycled properly.
I had DTech build one, and it's a beautiful piece that shoots wonderfully.
