You may hear repeaters hundreds of miles away on 2M FM. The furthest I've made repeater contact on FM is 439 miles, from Mint Hill to a NJ repeater. These conditions can be a lot of fun. Many people on repeaters are unaware, so when you come on a repeater in MD, they be like "you're where?". ;)

2M SSB will be many hundreds of miles today, but best done using a horizontal polarization antenna. Most operators on 2M SSB will be on beam antennas. You will be at a 20db disadvantage if on a vertical antenna, but do it anyway. These conditions will overcome many usual disabilities.

Yup. W4UA in high point was picking up a same frequency pair repeater in VA today and W4GSO was getting the same thing from one down at the coast. One of the guys I normally chat with during my drive was talking to a guy in SC on 2M yesterday.

We had mobile stations this morning from the Raleigh area on 145.230 that sounded like local, full quieting. Yesterday was just as good.

What site do you get those maps on?

This morning, I was getting N Wilkesboro from Chapel Hill full quieting and S9+4 (full meter), where normally I can get that with noise from north high point. Another guy was hitting it from Raleigh. A guy in Salisbury was hitting the S Wake 145.210 clear as day and the 147.270 JoCo machine was getting traffic from GA.
