Has anyone ever messed with reloading .308 at a reduced recoil. I want to try my young son on my .308 but cant seem to find any reduced recoil factory rounds locally. Rifle is a Its a Ruger American Compact.

If you don’t have one, a muzzle brake will reduce recoil significantly and doesn’t have to break the bank. I use a Jerry Miculek, they are available for around $40.

Semi auto or bolt?

I load 308 with trail boss and 150s for subs/low recoil

150 grain bullets or less and keep the velocity to 2500 or slightly less and you have reduced recoil.... Yet a rifle that will KILL......

Here's a reduced recoil load that I used to use when I shot my M1A competitively. It's an accurate 200yd load that recoils like an M1 carbine. It can reach out to 300yds, but you'll lose a lot to wind.

Speer 125gr TNT
41.5gr IMR4895
WLR primer
2.75" OAL

EDIT - As a matter of fact, I shot this group last weekend at PHA shooting a practice HP match using the above load. 10 rounds, 200yds prone, iron sights. NRA-SR target (3" x-ring)

So, a couple of ways you can go-

1.) Try subsonic ammo. Nowadays, lots of companies are making good 308 Subsonic.

This was from a quick search. You could probably find better with a decent 20 min search.
I know that Cabelas used to sell it under the brand name Atomix.

2.) Clamp on muzzle brake

Again, this was from another quick search...

3.) Use a heavier rifle

4.) The Patriot Ordnance Factory Revolution rifle
https://pof-usa.com/firearms/revolution/
https://www.cflgunandtactical.com/POF-USA-Revolution-s/129.htm

It is an AR platform that fires 308, but uses all the parts from an AR-15, including the bolt and BCG, which results in significantly reduced reciprocating mass, and significantly reduced recoil.

You can use any starting load for a youth load with a lighter bullet.

These are from Hodgdon

Just curious, has the kid "learned" on a 22lr? I think its important to not go zero to center fire.
He shoots my 6.8 in an ar platform lights out. He shot a buddies 7-08 reduced recoil the other day and handled it fine.

Thanks for the responses, now to pick up a set of dies and components and off we go
